Abstract

Oil spills, both in the ocean and inland waters, have negative effects such as mass mortality and habitat destruction. In this study, we develop a spilled oil point-of-testing device (SOPD), a field measurement system for immediate on-site fluorescence monitoring of oil concentrations. Photodetectors, such as photodiodes and photo multiplier tubes, which are commonly used in existing instrumentation, have inherent limitations because they are capable of only single-pixel detection. However, SOPD can cope with environmental noise caused by dust, dirt, and impurities, by adopting a multi-mega pixel complementary metal-oxide semiconductor image sensor as a detector. Furthermore, the manufacturing cost is remarkably reduced by a simple optical configuration using only two light-emitting diode light sources, five optical lenses, and a CMOS sensor. SOPD can quantitatively analyze fluorescence intensities at both low (0–1 ppm) and high (1–800 ppm) concentrations in marine and inland environments, respectively. The performance of the equipment reported in this paper was demonstrated by measuring the linear measurement range and the limit of detection using five different kinds of crude oil. A correlation analysis of crude oil samples having different collection dates was also completed. In addition, SOPD has been developed as a remote system that can be operated and analyzed on a smartphone, thereby enhancing user convenience, reducing analysis time, and simplifying device.

Highlights

We developed a spilled oil point-of-testing device (SOPD) using a CMOS image sensor as a detector.

Detection ranges of SOPD are from several ppb to several hundred ppm level, showing its high dynamic range.

Equipped with a multi-million-pixel image sensor, SOPD shows great noise-proof fluorescence detection compared to the PMT based detectors.

SOPD can analyze the captured image within a smartphone, thereby improving user convenience with minimized analysis time.

SOPD holds great promise in various chemical and biological fluorescence detection applications.

A novel lensfree CMOS image sensor based blood analysis technique using the LUCAS platform is described. Compared to the established clinical instruments, this technique which does not utilize any bulky and expensive optical and mechanical components can perform accurate and high-throughput blood analysis with an error rate of 5% in red blood cell count and 3~5% in hemoglobin concentration measurement and CD4/CD8 count within a simple, cost-effective and compact platform. Given its versatility combined with the wireless telecommunication technology, it holds a great promise in telemedicine and environment monitoring applications especially for the resource limited settings.

Optimized bench scale disassembly/separation technology has been developed for economically feasible and sustainable recycling of waste optical fiber cables. Ten batches of waste optical fiber cables have been randomly selected from a recycling company in order to characterize their components, identify their composition, and subsequently optimize the manual disassembly/separation processes. A manual cable cutter for randomly collected waste optical fiber cables has been designed and fabricated for bench scale operation in conjunction with (prior) induction heating of the waste optical fiber samples, which was deemed the most suitable means for an optimum disassembly/separation process. Actual test results on induction heating indicated possible disassembly/separation process optimization for the waste optical fibers under the conditions of 20 kW and 20 m/min of power and transfer rates, respectively.
Vol.30 No.4
The purpose of this study was to explore the experiences of adolescents who experienced a parent’s suicide as a surviving family member. In order to do this, the present study utilized a narrative inquiry method, which uses three dimensions of temporality, sociality, and place based upon the study participants’ unique experience. The study participants consisted of four adolescents who were younger than 24 years old, who experienced a mother’ or father’s suicide in their middle-and high-school period, and are currently participating in a self-help group for surviving family members at a suicide prevention center. The study results demonstrate that experience of study participants regarding a parent’s suicide can be composed of four categories of processes by time: 1) the time before a parent’s suicide, 2) the day of a parent’s suicide, 3) survival time after a parent’s suicide, and 4) current life. This study is significant in that it revealed a deeper meaning to the experience of a parent’s suicide by using each participant’s own expressions based on their unique experience, and helped to understand crisis situations in the process of growth experience and supporting systems regarding the overcoming of crisis. The findings of this study suggest that helping professionals should focus on prevention of secondary crisis amongst adolescents who have experienced a parent’ suicide, and help them recover and continue to grow by developing appropriate social support systems.
