Skin entrance dose for digital and film radiography in Korean dental schools

Purpose : This study was aimed to compare skin entrance dose of digital radiography with that of film radiography and to show the dose reduction achievement with digital systems at 11 dental schools in Korea. Materials and Methods : Forty six intraoral radiographic systems in 11 dental schools were included in this study. Digital sensors were used in 33 systems and film was used in 13 systems. Researchers and the volunteer visited 11 dental schools in Korea. Researchers asked the radiologic technician (s) at each school to set the exposure parameters and aiming the x-ray tube for the periapical view of the mandibular molar of the volunteer. The skin entrance doses were measured at the same exposure parameters and distance by the technician for each system with a dosimeter (Multi-O-Meter : Unfors instruments, Billdal, Sweden). Results : The median dose was 491.2 μGy for digital radiography and 1,205.0 μGy for film radiography. The skin entrance dose digital radiography was significantly lower than that of film radiography (p<0.05). Conclusion : Fifty-nine percent skin entrance dose reduction with digital periapical radiography was achieved over the film radiography in Korean dental schools.

It has widely been observed that the effect of elevating atmospheric CO2 concentrations on rice productivity depends largely on soil N availabilities. However, the responses of ammonia volatilization from flooded paddy soil that is an important pathway of N loss and thus affecting fertilizer N availability to concomitant increases in atmospheric CO2 and temperature has rarely been studied. In this paper, we first report the interactive effect of elevated CO2 and temperature on ammonia volatilization from rice paddy soils applied with urea. Urea labeled with 15N was used to quantitatively estimate the contribution of applied urea-N to total ammonia volatilization. This study was conducted using Temperature Gradient Chambers (TGCs) with two CO2 levels [ambient CO2 (AC), 383 ppmv and elevated CO2 (EC), 645 ppmv] as whole-plot treatment (main treatment) and two temperature levels [ambient temperature (AT), 25.7℃ and elevated temperature (ET), 27.8℃] as split-plot treatments (sub-treatment) with triplicates. Elevated temperature increased ammonia volatilization probably due to a shift of chemical equilibrium toward NH3 production via enhanced hydrolysis of urea to NH3 of which rate is dependent on temperature. Meanwhile, elevated CO2 decreased ammonia volatilization and that could be attributed to increased rhizosphere biomass that assimilates NH4+ otherwise being lost via volatilization. Such opposite effects of elevated temperature and CO2 resulted in the accumulated amount of ammonia volatilization in the order of ACET>ACAT>ECET>ECAT. The pattern of ammonia volatilization from applied urea-15N as affected by treatments was very similar to that of total ammonia volatilization. Our results suggest that elevated CO2 has the potential to decrease ammonia volatilization from paddy soils applied with urea, but the effect could partially be offset when air temperature rises concomitantly.

Filum terminale lipoma is an inherited lumbosacral abnormality that can cause tethered cord syndrome. This report describes an unusual case of lumbago and sciatica, pain suspected to be caused by a filum terminale lipoma where a herniated intervertebral disc had occurred. The patient was hospitalized for 43 days and received integrative Korean medicine treatment, including acupuncture, pharmacopuncture, Chuna therapy, cupping therapy, physiotherapy and herbal medicine. Treatment effectiveness was assessed using the numerical rating scale, Oswestry Disability Index, European Quality of Life 5-Dimensions, and patient symptoms. After inpatient treatment, the pain the patient suffered was significantly reduced, and the evaluation indices scores reflected this. Integrative Korean remedies may be an effective option for lower back pain and lower extremity symptoms which are caused by filum terminale lipoma where a herniated intervertebral disc has occurred. Additional clinical research is required to support this observation.

A spacecraft placed in an Earth-Moon L2 quasi-halo orbit can maintain constant communication between the Earth and the far side of the Moon. This quasi-halo orbit could be used to establish a lunar space station and serve as a gateway to explore the solar system. For a mission in an Earth-Moon L2 quasi-halo orbit, a spacecraft would have to be transferred from the Earth to the vicinity of the Earth-Moon L2 point, then inserted into the Earth-Moon L2 quasi-halo orbit. Unlike the near Earth case, this orbit is essentially very unstable due to mutually perturbing gravitational attractions by the Earth, the Moon and the Sun. In this paper, an insertion maneuver of a spacecraft into an Earth-Moon L2 quasi-halo orbit was investigated using the global optimization algorithm, including simulated annealing, genetic algorithm and pattern search method with collision avoidance taken into consideration. The result shows that the spacecraft can maintain its own position in the Earth-Moon L2 quasi-halo orbit and avoid collisions with threatening objects.

Background: The incidence of skin disease in the general hospital offers available source of information that may represent their province. The population of Goyang city has increased rapidly. Thus, statistical study of the latest data and comparison this with previous reports may be necessary. Objectives: To study the prevalence of common dermatoses and compare this with previous reports. Methods: 21,693 outpatients were reviewed who visited the Department of Dermatology at Myongji Hospital for the first time from 2009 to 2013. The 15 most common dermatoses were statistically analyzed by their sex, age and impression by medical record. Results: The 6 most common dermatoses were found to be dermatophytosis, alopecia, other eczema, urticaria, herpes zoster and viral wart. The distinct characteristic of skin disease of this study was a high incidence of herpes zoster and viral warts, as compared to the previous studies. Conclusion: High incidence of herpes zoster reflects the increasing rate of herpes zoster on a nationwide scale. Also viral wart and molluscum contagiosum which are common dermatoses to under 15 year old children, still showed high incidence as compared to the previous study done by our hospital 5 years(2004-2008) ago.
