This study was carried out to investigate the effects of infestation rate by the pine gall midge on several characters of cone and seed in Pinus densiflora Sieb. et Zucc. 'The results were summarized as follows: 1. 'The averages of cone characters were 31.59 ± 0.61 mm in length, 19.12 ± 0.28 mm in diameter, 6.06 ± 0.22 g in fresh weight, and 3.17 ± 0.12 g in dry weight. Most these characters have a tendency to decrease with increase of tree age and with increase in infestation rate. 2. The averages of seed characters were 4.94 ± 0.06 mm in length, 3.06 ± 0.08 mm in diameter, 1.83 ± 0.02 mm in thickness, and 8.33 ± 0.34 mg in weight. Most these characters have a tendency to decrease with the increase in infestation rate. 3. Most coefficients of correlation showed negative relationships between infestation rate and each character of cone and seed, but they were not significant statistically.

The purpose of this survey is to investigate and analize the status of flower consumption by city households so that it can provide basic materials for the development of horticulture industry. For this purpose, one thousand housewives were questioned living in six large cities : Seoul, Pusan, Taegu, Inchon, Kwangju and Taejon. The results of the analysis are as follows; 1. The most favorite cut flowers by season were rose, carnation and freesias in spring: roses and gypsophila paniculate in summer : chrysanthermum in autumn : gypsophila paniculate, roses chrysanthemums and lilies in winter. 2. The uses of cut flowers was mostly for gifts(58.4%), and that of pot flowers was mostly for home decoration. 3. flower shops were the most popular place for buying cut flowers(59.5%), followed by wholesale markets(22.5%) and street stalls(16.2%). In the case of pot flower, wholesale markets were the most favorite place(32.4%), street stalls(27.9%), flower shops(24.8%), and farm houses(11.9%). The survey showed that consumers frequent a shopping place because of 'easy accessibility', and 'various varieties in stock' in the case of cut flowers and, in that of pot flowers, 'easy accessibility' and 'low price' were the main resons in the case of pot flowers. 4. The purchase frequency rate by seson for cut flowers was that 'regardless of season' was 58.1% and 'spring', 28.9%. For pot flowers, 'spring' 58.9% and 'regardless of season' 33.6%. For the day of the week cut flowers were bought most open, Saturday came first with 34.2%, Monday and Sunday followed with 27.0% and 15.5% respectively. On the other hand, Sunday came first with 42.3%, Saturday(32.5%) and Monday(8.3%) took the second and third place respectively for pot flowers When it came to the purchase time of the day for cut flowers, 31.8% of the respondents bought then between ten and noon and 21.8% between four and six in the afternoon. 5. concerning the average amount of money spent at one time for cut flowers, 33.3% of the respondents said 3,000won to 5,000won and 23.2% replied 5,000won to 10,000won. While 36.8% answered that they paid 5,000won to 10,000won and 23.5% said 3,000won to 5,000won for a pot flowers. 6. Relating to the demand of flower stores, 28.8% wanted 'low price' : 27.9%. requested 'clear markings of the prices' : and 26.4%, wanted 'abundant commodities'

Xanthomonas axonopodis pv. glycines (Xag) is a nec-rotrophic bacterial pathogen of the soybean that causes bacterial pustules and is a nonhost pathogen of the chili pepper. In the current study, chili pepper fruit wound inoculated in planta with Xag 8ra formed necrotic lesions on the fruit surface and induced sev-eral structural and chemical barriers systemically in the fruit tissue. The initial defense response included programmed cell death of necrotizing and necrotized cells, which was characterized by nuclear DNA cleav-age, as detected by TUNEL-confocal laser scanning microscopy (CLSM), and phosphatidylserine exposure on cell walls distal to the infection site, as detected by Annexin V FLUOS-CLSM. These two responses may facilitate cell killing and enhance transportation of cell wall materials used for cell wall thickening, respective-ly. The cells beneath the necrotic tissue were enlarged and divided to form periclinal cell walls, resulting in extensive formation of several parallel boundary lay-ers at the later stages of infection, accompanying the deposition of wall fortificationmaterials for strength-ening structural defenses. These results suggest that nonhost resistance of chili pepper fruit against the nonhost necrotrophic pathogen Xag 8ra is activated systematically from the initial infection until termi-nation of the infection cycle, resulting in complete inhibition of bacterial pathogenesis by utilizing organ-specific in situ physiological events governed by the expression of genes in the plant fruit organ.

A new early maturing and high yielding vegetable peanut “Ami”

Recently, fresh peanut eaten after boil is popular to korean consumer owing to its sweet taste. A new vegetable peanut variety “Ami”(Arachis hypogaea ssp. fastigiata.) was developed at the Department of Functional Crop, NICS, in Milyang in 2012. It was developed from the cross between the short stem cultivar “Satonoka” and the large grain cultivar “Milyang 16”. “Ami” which is Shipung plant type has 50cm main stem length and 10 branch number per plant. Each pod has two grains with brown testa and long-ellipse shape and dried 100-seed weight was 84g in the regional yield trials(RYT). The Sucrose and tannin content of fresh peanut are 24.9mg/g and 4.9mg/g, respectively. Functional compound content was 3944㎍/g of Luteolin in peanut shell, This variety also showed more resistant to stem rot and lodging, compared with check variety, Palkwang. In the regional yield trials “Ami” was outyielded than check variety by 9% with 10.10MT/ha for fresh pod and by 14% with 4.51MT/ha for dried kernel.
Radiography with Low Energy Protons Generated from Ultraintense Laser-plasma Interactions

In order to obtain high quality images of thin objects, we performed an experiment of proton radiography by using low energy protons generated from the interaction of an ultrashort ultraintense laser with solid targets. The protons were produced from a thin polyimide target irradiated by the laser pulse, and their maximum energy was estimated at up to 1.8 MeV. A CR-39 nuclear track detector was used as a proton radiography screen. The proton images were obtained by using an optical microscope and the spatial resolution was evaluated by a Modulation Transfer Function (MTF). We have achieved about 10 μm spatial resolution of images. The obtained spatial resolution shows about 4~5 times better value than the conventional X-ray radiography for inspection or non-destructive test (NDT) purpose.

The contents of Pb and CD measured with the barks of Pinus densiflora in Seoul area, Yangjaedong area near the Kyungbu-highway, Mt. Keryong and Mt. Seolak area, from Sep. to Ock. in 1988. Pb contents in Seoul area were 17.8 ppm at Changkyungkung, 17.1 ppm at Chongamdong, 13.2 ppm at Mt. Kwanak, 7.6 ppm at Mt. Dobong and 3.7 ppm at Mt. Surak. Except Mt. Kwanak, the difference between areas of central and mountains in Seoul were high significant. Mt Seolak area also showed variations in Pb contents from 16.8 ppm to 32.1 ppm according to studied sites. Cd contents in Seoul area were 0.47 ppm at Changkyungkung, 0.65 ppm at Chongamdong, 0.61 ppm at Mt. Kwanak, 0.52 ppm at Mt. Dobong, 0.47 ppm at Mt. Surak. Therefore, Cd contents in Seoul area exhibited more variations between sampling plots than between the areas of central and mountains in Seoul. Mt Seolak area also showed variations from 0.20 ppm to 0.34 ppm in Cd contents, and it was the lowest in all the studied area.
