Bioaccumulation of Arsenic in Recombinant Escherichia coli Expressing Human Metallothionein

        Yu-Jie Su,Jian-Qun Lin,Jian-Qiang Lin,Dong-Hui Hao 한국생물공학회 2009 Biotechnology and Bioprocess Engineering Vol.14 No.5

The recombinant Escherichia coli(E.coli) expressing human hepatic metallothionein_IA (hMT_IA) was constructed for bioaccumulation of Arsenic (As). The gene sequence of hMT_IA was modified for codon preference of E.coli and synthesized using chemical method. The vector of pGEX_4T_1 was used=and hMT_IA was expressed as the fusion protein with glutathione S-transferase (GST) tag. The bioaccumulation capability of arsenite compounds As(III) of the recombinant E.coli increased more than 3-fold from 76.3 to 319.6 μg/g dry cells compared with the control. The conditions of 50 μM of As(III) and low pHs were optimal for As(III) bioaccumulation. The heavy metals of Cd, Hg, and Zn inhibited As(III) bioaccumulation. The bioaccumulation reached 70% of the saturated value within 1 h. The recombinant E.coli will be useful in bioremediation of arsenic or other kinds of heavy metal contaminated water. The Production of a Gendered Space : Reading Women’s Landmarks in Anping, Taiwan

        Su-lin Yu 숙명여자대학교 아시아여성연구원 2014 Asian Women Vol.30 No.4

This study explores how Anping, one of the most significant cultural centers in Asia, has been transformed into a gendered space. To read Anping as a gendered space, this paper, based upon news reports and intensive interviews with participating agents in the community, will focus on the only two officially designated womens landmarks in the region as the subjects of textual analysis. I will show the process of the production and representation of Lin Mor Niang Park and the statues of Miss Jin as well as her mother. First, I will analyze how metaphors of gender inscribed in the landmarks are employed to reinforce dominant gender stereotypes. Next, I will explore how the womens landmarks have turned into the most desirable forms of contemporary cultural capital related to a growth in tourism and a shift towards an entrepreneurial form of urban governance. Indeed, gender is not only constitutive of, but virtually indispensable to, the configuration of the place. In contrast to the current masculine version of Anping’s map, which is full of military and colonial landmarks, this study seeks to enrich Anping’s outlook by identifying significant sites particularly associated with female representatives of their time. My purpose is to produce a new way to understand the city’s cultural landscape by locating women’s stories in the mapping of Anping’s history. By representing the new visual modalities such as Lin Mor Niang Park and Miss Jin’s statue into the current mapping, this study can contribute to what might be called a feminist politics of place construction.

      • Analysis of International Tourist Arrivals Worldwide

        Yu-Wen Su,Hui-Lin Lin 한국문화관광학회 2012 문화관광연구 Vol.14 No.2

Using the panel data of 66 countries between 2000 and 2009, we study the positive effect of world heritage sites(WHSs) on the international tourism demand, and investigate how this effect changes by different number of WHSs. Our results indicate that a country possessing WHSs would increase its international tourist arrivals, and the positive effect of natural WHSs is slightly bigger than cultural ones. Therefore, a country possessing WHSs would benefit the development of its tourism economy. Moreover, this positive effect declines while the number of WHSs rises, but when a country possesses sufficient WHSs, this effect increases instead. Thus, the marginal effect of WHSs demonstrates a U-curve as the number of WHSs increases. In addition, even though the marginal effect of WHSs has different patterns for each region, based on time periods, the result is quite robust.

Beyond the Imaginary Relationship between Western Feminists and Third-World Women

        Su-lin YU 이화여자대학교 아시아여성학센터 2007 Asian Journal of Women's Studies(AJWS) Vol.13 No.1

This study reveals a postcolonial desire not only to redraw the boundary between western and Third-World women, but also to investigate the imaginary relationship, or rather, the psychological dynamics involved in western women’s relationship with Third- World women. Rather than reduce the relationship between western women and Third-World women to a simple opposition; it attempts to understand the ambivalence in their relationship. This study is driven by my desire to understand how western feminists’ seek to identify with Third-World women and how this can contribute to an understanding of postcolonial power relations and move beyond the assumed polarities of identity politics. I want to be able to think beyond a simple binary analysis of culpability and innocence and move toward an understanding of how differences among women can be seen to be enriching and valuable.

        Across East and West

        Su-lin Yu 숙명여자대학교 아시아여성연구원 2012 Asian Women Vol.28 No.1

Originated in the U.S. context, third wave feminism has traveled in different communities of practices and cultural locations. I am interested in exploring the production, distribution, and reception of third wave feminism in different sites of knowledge production such as academic publishing practices, conferences, and classrooms as it travels across geopolitical borders, and more specifically, between East and West. Therefore, this paper will first interrogate the processes through which “third wave feminism” is formed and disseminated within a cross-cultural framework. Second, the paper will analyze how third wave feminism is brought into friction and dialogue with local experiences so as to enable identifications and disidentifications. In other words, this paper will examine how the meanings, expressions, and implications of “third wave feminism” have intersected and diverged for women in various global locations. Ultimately this paper will explore the possibilities and limits of third wave feminism as a new form of transnational alliance in a world of increasing cross-border movements and cross-cultural contacts.

        Third-Wave Feminism : A Transnational Perspective

        YU, Su-lin Ewha Womans University Press 2009 Asian Journal of Women's Studies(AJWS) Vol.15 No.1

This paper not only discusses theories and practices of third wave feminist writing from a transnational feminist perspective, but also examines the possible interconnections and network exchanges between western and Asian women in the context of third-wave feminism. First, I shall examine the relationship between western feminists and third world women, using an overview of the literature on difference and identity in the last two decades of feminist engagement with postcolonial and multicultural discourses. Next, I shall examine the rhetoric and writing of young feminists in the Asian context. After examining the issues and concerns of the new generation of Asian women, I will examine the possibility of a transnationalthird wave feminist movement and the effects it may have on local communities. This project seeks to initiate a platform for dialogue between western and Asian feminist scholars so that we may build stronger transnational alliances.

      • Pathologic Response During Chemo-radiotherapy and Variation of Serum VEGF Levels Could Predict Effects of Chemo-Radiotherapy in Patients with Esophageal Cancer

        Yu, Jing-Ping,Lu, Wen-Bin,Wang, Jian-Lin,Ni, Xin-Chu,Wang, Jian,Sun, Zhi-Qiang,Sun, Su-Ping Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2015 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.16 No.3

Background: To investigate the relationship between pathologic tumor response to concurrent chemoradiotherapy and variation of serum VEGF in patients with esophageal cancer. Materials and Methods: Forty six patients with esophageal cancer who were treated with concurrent chemo-radiotherapy were enrolled. Endoscopic and pathologic examination was conducted before and four weeks afterwards. Serum level of VEGF was documented before, four weeks later and after chemo-radiotherapy. The relationship between pathologic response and the variation of serum level of VEGF and its influence on the prognosis were investigated. Results: Serum level of VEGF decreased remarkably during and after chemo-radiotherapy in patients whose pathologic response was severe (F=5.393, 4.587, P(0.05). There were no statistical differences of serum VEGF level before, during and after chemo-radiotherapy for patients whose pathologic response was moderate or mild. There were 18 (85.7%), 7 (53.8%) and 6 patients (50.0%) whose serum VEGF level dropped in the severe, moderate and mild group, respectively, with significant differences among these groups (p=0.046). Two year survival rates of patients with severe, moderate and mild pathologic response were 61.9%, 53.8% and 33.3% respectively, and no statistically difference between severe and mild group regarding OS (p=0.245) was tested. Conclusions: Tumor pathologic response during chemo-radiotherapy and the changes of serum VEGF lever could predict curative effects of chemo-radiotherapy in patients with esophageal cancer.

Moving Mass Actuated Reentry Vehicle Control Based on Trajectory Linearization

Su, Xiao-Long,Yu, Jian-Qiao,Wang, Ya-Fei,Wang, Lin-lin The Korean Society for Aeronautical and Space Scie 2013 International Journal of Aeronautical and Space Sc Vol.14 No.3

The flight control of re-entry vehicles poses a challenge to conventional gain-scheduled flight controllers due to the widely spread aerodynamic coefficients. In addition, a wide range of uncertainties in disturbances must be accommodated by the control system. This paper presents the design of a roll channel controller for a non-axisymmetric reentry vehicle model using the trajectory linearization control (TLC) method. The dynamic equations of a moving mass system and roll control model are established using the Lagrange method. Nonlinear tracking and decoupling control by trajectory linearization can be viewed as the ideal gain-scheduling controller designed at every point along the flight trajectory. It provides robust stability and performance at all stages of the flight without adjusting controller gains. It is this "plug-and-play" feature that is highly preferred for developing, testing and routine operating of the re-entry vehicles. Although the controller is designed only for nominal aerodynamic coefficients, excellent performance is verified by simulation for wind disturbances and variations from -30% to +30% of the aerodynamic coefficients.
