Reasserting the Place of the Subject in Design Theory

This paper addresses the issue of subjectivity in design theory, and argues that issues of subjectivity need to be accorded a more fundamental role in current theories of design. The paper explains how the concept of design thinking has led design theorists away from the products of design to focus instead on the methods and cognitive processes invoked by the act of designing, which point towards a reconceptualization of design as a fundamental mode of human action. The second half of the paper introduces the author’s own research into desirability in design. This approach uses a model of subjectivity based on the psychoanalytic theory of Jacques Lacan to explore the relations between user and object. The ideological inflection of underlying concepts of design research is also noted as a potentially interesting area for future research.

라캉 세미나의 두번째 해(1954-55)는 동시대에 발달된 인공두뇌학 분야의 개념을 많은 부분 참조하였기 때문에 종종 ‘인공두뇌학 세미나’로 불리워진다. 그러나 오늘날 인공두뇌학은 야심차게 시작했지만 실패한 프로젝트로서 역사적 진귀한 유물과 같은 무언가로 보여지고 있고 세미나의 인공두뇌학적 내용의 많은 부분들이 간과되어진다. 이 논문은 우선 1차 인공두뇌학의 간단한 역사와 개념을 보여줌으로써, 그리고 라캉이 세미나를 통해 다루었던 인공두뇌학 개념의 내용을 검토함으로써 그 인공두뇌학 내용의 새로운 문맥을 형성하려는 시도이다. 이 논문이 주장하는 이러한 방향전환의 이유는 1차 인공두뇌학 분야의 야망들과 우리 현재 디지털 시대가 곧 촉발할 인간 주관성에 대해 진술된 혁명 간의 많은 유사성 때문이다. The second year of Lacan’s seminar (1954-55) is often called the ‘cybernetic seminar’, owing the frequent references made to concepts developed contemporaneously in the field of cybernetics. Today, however, cybernetics is seen as something of a historical curiosity – an ambitious project that failed – and so much of the cybernetic content of the seminar is overlooked. This article attempts to restore the centrality of that cybernetic content, firstly by presenting a brief history of first-order cybernetics and its concepts, and then by examining some of the didactic uses to which Lacan put these concepts. The reason for this reorientation, the article argues, is the many parallels that can be drawn between the ambitions of first-order cybernetics and the purported revolution in human subjectivity that our present digital age is soon to unleash. 본 연구에서는, 한국 디자인에서의 전통성과 그 영향 및 해석의 의미를 조사 하여, 어떻게 그 습관적 영향의 한계를 벗어나 장래 한국 디자인의 정체성을 펼칠 수 있는가에 대한 새로운 방향을 조사 하였다. 본 분석은 논리적 대립과 결과를 매핑하는 방법인 그레마스의 기호학적 사각형 방법으로 진행 하였고, 한국의 전통성을 국제화적 현대성에 대비되는 사각형으로 구성하여 뒤 따르는 모순과 통합적인 면들을 조사 하였다. 발견된 대립 점들은 확인 되었거나, 부인 되었거나 혹은 나타나지 않는 한국적 관념의 표현 가능한 궁극적 폭의 한계인 ‘논리적 종결’로 귀결되는 디자인 정체성의 벡터로써 위치의 범위를 정의하는 대립점 등을 발견 하였다. 이러한 분석으로부터, 한국적 전통성과 국제적 현대성 사이에서 무관하게 대립되는 이 논리적 종결을 뛰어넘어 나아갈 수 있는 네 개의 전략을 제안 하였다. 한계라기보다는, 미래의 디자인 정체성 수립을 위하여 다양한 가능성을 풍부하게 제시할 수 있는 방법을 증명 하고자 한다. In this paper, we examine the meaning of the term "tradition" and its effect and interpretation within Korean design, and how the limitations of its accustomed effects can be subverted so that diverse paths can be opened up for future Korean design identity. Our analysis proceeds by means of the Greimasian semiotic square, a method for mapping a logical opposition and its consequences. We plot our square by opposing Korean tradition to global modernity and examining subsequent contradictions and syntheses. We find that the founding opposition serves to define a range of positions that either affirm, deny or efface Korean tradition as a vector of design identity, resulting in a "logical closure" that ultimately limits the breadth of the possible expressions of the concept of Koreanness. From the analysis, we propose four strategies for moving beyond this logical closure, each of which render the opposition between Korean tradition and global modernity irrelevant. Rather than a limitation, it proves to offer a wealth of diverse possibilities for future design identity.

Subjectivity and Meaning as Aspects of Product Experience

이 논문은 디자인이 지닌 의미의 본질과 그 역할범위에 대해 이론적인 설명을 제시한다. 저자는 디자인 이론학자 클라우드 크리핀도프(Klaus Kirippendorff)와 리처드 뷰캐넌(Richard Buchanan)이 기호학적 관점으로 디자인의 의미와 뜻을 해석한 접근 방식을 기반에 두고 연구를 진행하였으며 특히 이 글에서는 의미 형성 과정에 있어 욕망의 역할에 중점을 두었다. 저자는 프랑스 정신 분석학자 자크 라캉의 이론에 근거한 기호학적 해석 방법을 활용하여 연구 논제를 풀어내며 개인의 주관적 견해가 디자인의 의미 형성에 어떤 상호 작용을 하는지 심층적으로 다룬다. 결과적으로 이 논문은 현 디자인 이론 학계에서 활발하게 논의되고 있는 쟁점들에 대한 이론적인 해석을 제시한다. This paper addresses a theoretical problem regarding the scope and nature of the role of meaning in design. The author expands upon the work of design theorists Klaus Krippendorff and Richard Buchanan to argue for a semiotics-based approach to meaning in design, but one that properly acknowledges the role of desire in the creation of meaning. The author therefore argues for an approach to semiotics that is derived from the work of French psychoanalyst Jacques Lacan, which takes proper consideration of the relation between meaning and subjectivity. This paper is thus a theoretical intervention, addressing several ongoing areas of debate within design theory.

Neither Dokdo, Nor the DDP: An Argument for Negative Hybridity

This paper argues for a reconceptualization of hybridity. Rejecting the definition of hybridity as a ‘cultural melange’ as ideological, it reconstructs the contradiction inherent to hybridity as a dialectical opposition, and then, following the dialectical materialism of Slavoj Žižek, this paper follows this opposition through its dialectical resolution. Consequently, the model of hybridity that claims the compatibility of local and global identity is resisted in preference to a form of negative hybridity that rejects the choice between local and global identity as false. This theoretical model is played out with reference to contemporary South Korean identity, using the tension between local Korean culture and an intruding global culture to explore the contradictions that hybridity tries to contain and the motivations that give rise to them.
