        Clinical Article : Abdominal Obesity and Mortality in Continuous Ambulatory Peritoneal Dialysis Patients

        Background: The relationship between abdominal obesity (AO) and mortality in peritoneal dialysis (PD) patients is controversial. Methods: The prevalence of AO in 84 PD patients was assessed in a cross- section manner and followed up for 9 years at a single center. AO was defined as a waist circumference (WC) of more than 90 cm in males or more than 80 cm in females. The patients were classified as either with AO(AO group) or without AO(nAO group). Results: The AO group was older, contained more diabetics, more females, and had higher Charlson comorbidity index (aCCI) scores, BMI, and triglyceride and lower serum creatinine than the non-AO subjects. The follow-up duration was 53.2±34.4 months. At the end of the follow-up, eighteen patients (21.4%) were dead; 9 died of cardiovascular causes. The five year survival rate was 40.8%. Kaplan-Meier analysis revealed that both all-cause and cardiovascular- cause mortalities were similar in the AO and nAO groups. Multivariate analysis revealed the presence of AO not to be an independent risk factor of all-cause and cardiovascular-cause mortality. Conclusion: AO itself might not be a risk factor for mortality in PD patients. Nevertheless, further prospective studies with a large number of patients will be needed to prove this.

      • Improvement of SVM Image Reconstruction Algorithm in ECT System

        Due to the problem of low imaging accuracy and slow imaging speed when applying SVM image reconstruction algorithm in ECT system to dealing with a large amount of sample data set, the method of combining feature dimension reduction with SVM algorithm is proposed. This method classifies the sample data by using the way of clustering and extracts the feature parameter, finds out the connection between each sample and the feature, and deals the sample data with dimension reduction, thus finally getting the high-quality training sample. Then it trains the simplified sample data by applying SVM algorithm and obtains decision function, then the decision function is used to predict and image. The experimental results of image reconstruction show that this method greatly reduces the running time and improves the accuracy of imaging compared to using the SVM algorithm alone.

        A Receiver-Aided Seamless And Smooth Inter-RAT Handover At Layer-2

        The future mobile networks consist of hyper-dense heterogeneous and small cell networks of same or different radio access technologies (RAT). Integrating mobile networks of different RATs to provide seamless and smooth mobility service will be the target of future mobile converged network. Generally, handover from high-speed networks to low-speed networks faces many challenges from application perspective, such as abrupt bandwidth variation, packet loss, round trip time variation, connection disruption, and transmission blackout. Existing inter-RAT handover solutions cannot solve all the problems at the same time. Based on the high-layer convergence sublayer design, a new receiver-aided soft inter-RAT handover is proposed. This soft handover scheme takes advantage of multihoming ability of multi-mode mobile station (MS) to smooth handover procedure. In addition, handover procedure is seamless and applicable to frequent handover scenarios. The simulation results conducted in UMTS-WiMAX converged network scenario show that: in case of TCP traffics for handover from WiMAX to UMTS, not only handover latency and packet loss are eliminated completely, but also abrupt bandwidth/wireless RTT variation is smoothed. These delightful features make this soft handover scheme be a reasonable candidate of mobility management for future mobile converged networks.

        Aptamer-conjugated gold nanoparticles platform as the intracellular delivery of antibodies for cancer therapy

        Antibodies are being increasingly used for therapeutic purposes due to their remarkable target specificityand affinity. However, currently available antibody therapies are restricted to target proteins in the outercell membrane or in the extracellular fluids because of the lack of technologies for effective intracellulardelivery of antibodies. Here, we report an efficient and versatile intracellular antibody delivery system. This system is based on gold nanoparticles (AuNPs) conjugated with DNA aptamers (Apt) against theFc region of IgG (AuNP-AptIgG), allowing to load any antibodies onto the AuNP-AptIgG by simple mixing. This AuNP-AptIgG-Ab platform was effective for cytosolic delivery of antibodies to clinically importantmutant proteins via scavenger receptors and caveolae-mediated endocytosis. Specifically, cancer cellsexpressing BRAFV600E, a variant of BRAF identified in numerous types of cancers, exhibited reduced cellviability by 70% when BRAFV600E antibodies were intracellularly delivered using the AuNP-AptIgG(AuNP-AptIgG-aBRAFV600E). In addition, subcutaneous injection of AuNP-AptIgG-aBRAFV600E into in vivoxenografted melanoma tumors expressing BRAFV600E resulted in both inhibition of proliferation andinduction of apoptosis, leading to tumor regression in mice. Thus, our findings indicate that the AuNPAptIgG-Ab system can serve as a promising platform for effective intracellular delivery of antibodies fortherapeutic purposes.

        Apoptosis and autophagy of muscle cell during pork postmortem aging

        Objective: Pork is an important source of animal protein in many countries. Subtle physiochemical changes occur during pork postmortem aging. The changes of apoptosis and autophagy in pork at 6 h to 72 h after slaughter were studied to provide evidence for pork quality. Methods: In this article, morphological changes of postmortem pork was observed through Hematoxylin-eosin staining, apoptotic nuclei were observed by TdT-mediated dUTP nick end labeling assay, protein related to apoptosis and autophagy expressions were tested by western blot and LC3 level were expressed according to immunofluorescence assay. Results: In this study, we found the occurrence of apoptosis in postmortem pork, and the process was characterized by nucleus condensation and fragmentation, formation of apoptotic bodies, increase in apoptosis-related Bax/Bcl-2 levels, and activation of caspases. Autophagy reached its peak between 24 and 48 h after slaughter, accompanied by the formation of autophagosomes on the cell membrane and expression of autophagy-related proteins beclin-1, P62, LC3-I, LC3-II, and ATG5. Conclusion: Obvious apoptosis was observed at 12 h and autophagy reached its peak at 48 h. The present work provides the evidence for the occurrence of apoptosis and autophagy during postmortem aging of pork. In conclusion, the apoptosis and autophagy of muscle cells discovered in this study have important implications for pork in the meat industry.
