Selective extraction, separation and recovery of Cu(II) in presence of Zn(II) and Ni(II) from leach liquor of waste printed circuit board using microcapsules coated with Cyanex 272

Md. Sohrab Hossain,Md. Fazlul Bari,Samsul Baharin Jamaludin,Kamarudin Hussin,Mohd. Omar Ab. Kadir 한국화학공학회 2012 Korean Journal of Chemical Engineering Vol.29 No.5

The study was conducted to optimize the selective extraction and recovery of Cu(II) in the presence of Zn(II) and Ni(II) from the leach liquor of waste printed circuit boards (PCBs). The extraction experiments were carried out according to 24 factorial design of experiment to optimize the extraction factors. The design was analyzed using MINITAB to determine the main effects and interactions of the chosen extraction factors. The factors chosen were:extraction pH, amount of Cyanex 272 in dispersed phase during MC-Xs preparation, amount of MC-Xs and temperature. The pH, amount of MC-Xs and temperature were found to be statistically significant. The optimized experimental conditions for the Cu(II) extraction in presence of Zn(II) and Ni(II) were extraction pH 6.0, amount of Cyanex 272in dispersed phase 3 g, amount of MC-Xs 2.5 g and Temperature 45 oC. Factorial design of experiment was also carried out to determine the Cu(II) stripping factors from the loaded MC-Xs using H2SO4 solution. The liquid-liquid extraction Cu(II) was conducted with the prime aim to evaluate the nature of Cu(II) complex extracted by Cyanex 272. Results showed that the extraction species is [Cu(HA2)(Ac)·2HA]. Finally, a complete process for the separation and recovery of Cu(II), Zn(II) and Ni(II) from the leach liquor of waste PCBs was conducted based on the optimized experimental condition and effect of pH on extraction.

Antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity of Heritiera fomes (Buch.-Ham), a mangrove plant of the Sundarbans

        Islam Md. Emdadul,Islam Kazi Mohammed Didarul,Billah Md. Morsaline,Biswas Rana,Sohrab Md. Hossain,Rahman S. M. Mahbubur 경희대학교 융합한의과학연구소 2020 Oriental Pharmacy and Experimental Medicine Vol.20 No.2

The antioxidant and anti-inflammatory potential of Heritiera fomes ethanolic extract was evaluated.Query Ethanolic extraction of dried and grinded plant leaves and bark was performed. Antioxidant activity was evaluated by 1, 1-diphenyl-2-picryl-hydrazil (DPPH) free radical scavenging assay, ferric reducing antioxidant power (FRAP) and β-carotene bleaching inhibition assay. Total phenolic and flavonoid content were also determined. Anti-inflammatory activity was evaluated by in vitro human RBC membrane stabilizing assay and in vivo mice paw edema test. Ethanolic bark and leaf extracts of H. fomes (S1 and S2, respectively) showed significant scavenging effect on DPPH scavenging 68.51 µg/ml for S1 and 108.64 µg/ml for S2. Potent reduction potential (FRAP) was observed in S1 (83.75 mM of ferrous equivalent) while the FRAP of standard ascorbic acid was found 86.66 μM of ferrous equivalent. S1 also exhibited 87.43% β-carotene bleaching inhibition as comparable to standard butylated hydroxytoluene with 98.85% inhibition. Substantial phenolic and flavonoid content was also observed in S1 (136.83 μg gallic acid equivalent/g of extract and 76.67 μg quercetin equivalent/g of extract, respectively). S1 could provide 61.73% and 53.27% protection of RBC membrane in hypotonicity and heat induced lysis of RBC, respectively while the standard diclofenac sodium provided 91.66% and 86.66% protection, respectively. Furthermore, 44.16% reduction in mice paw edema at 40 μg/kg bw concentration was observed in S1 as compared to standard indomethacine (53.54% in 10 μg/kg bw concentration). The results revealed that the bark extract (S1) of H. fomes possesses significant antioxidant and anti-inflammatory activity.

      • Impact of urbanization and industrialization on irrigation water quality of a canal - a case study of Tongi canal, Bangladesh

        Zakir, H.M.,Islam, Md. Mahidul,Hossain, Md. Sohrab Techno-Press 2016 Advances in environmental research Vol.5 No.2

The Dhaka city, the capital of Bangladesh is one of the most densely populated cities in the world. Tongi canal is situated on the north of the city, which connected the Turag river to the west and the Balu river to the east. A total of 26 water samples were collected from the canal to measure irrigation water quality on the basis of their trace metal and major ionic constituents. Trace metals concentrations in water samples were determined using an Atomic Absorption Spectrophotometer. The amount of Fe, Mn, Zn and Pb in water samples ranged from 0.01-0.80, trace-1.02, trace-0.054 and $0.43-0.64{\mu}g\;mL^{-1}$, respectively. The mean concentration of Ca, Mg, Na, K, $HCO_3{^-}$, $Cl^-$, $BO{_3}^{3-}$, $PO{_4}^{3-}$ and $SO{_4}^{2-}$ in water samples were 45.32, 15.33, 151.65, 11.98, 516.06, 94.69, 0.33, 14.02 and $56.21{\mu}g\;mL^{-1}$, respectively. In respect of $HCO_3{^-}$, $SO{_4}^{2-}$, $PO{_4}^{3-}$ and K contents, most of the water samples were found problematic for irrigation. In context of RSC and hardness, 96 and 92% of water samples were graded as unsuitable and hard class, respectively. The study concluded that Pb content in canal water was comparatively high, so it is desirable to take necessary initiative to minimize the contamination level and to monitor its concentration in water routinely.

A Conformational Isomer of Soulattrolide from the Stem Bark of Calophyllum symingtonianum and Its Antibacterial Activity

        Deny Susanti,Nissad Attoumani,Muhammad Taher,Mohd Fazlin Rezali,Md. Hossain Sohrab,Choudhury Mahmood Hasan,Zainul Amiruddin Zakaria 한국생약학회 2018 Natural Product Sciences Vol.24 No.1

Callophylum symingtonianum (Guttiferae), an evergreen broad-leaved tree that usually grows in hill forests, can be found distributed in the Malay Peninsula. The barks, leaves, flowers and seeds is often used medicinally to treat diarrhea and rheumatism. In the present study, we isolated two inophyllum type coumarins, 12-O-ethylinophyllum D (1) and iso-soulattrolide (2) from the stembarks of C. symingtonianum together with their antibacterial activity. The compounds were isolated by chromatographic methods on a silica gel. The structures were established by spectroscopic methods including UV, IR, (1D and 2D) NMR and mass spectrometry as well as by comparison with several literature sources. The antibacterial activity of those compounds was tested using a disc-diffusion assay against Staphylococcus aureus, Bacillus cereus, Escherichia coli and Pseudomonas aeruginosa. Both compound exhibited mild inhibition against P. aeruginosa with both 111 mg/ml MIC value. Compound 2 also inhibits S. aureus with 25 mg/ml MIC value.

Simultaneous Extraction and Separation of Oil and Azadirachtin from Seeds and Leaves of Azadirachta indica using Binary Solvent Extraction

Sheela Subramanian,Aiza Syuhaniz Salleh,Robert Thomas Bachmann,Md. Sohrab Hossain 한국생약학회 2019 Natural Product Sciences Vol.25 No.2

Conventional extraction of oil and azadirachtin, a botanical insecticide, from Azadirachta indica involves defatting the seeds and leaves using hexane followed by azadirachtin extraction with a polar solvent. In order to simplify the process while maintaining the yield we explored a binary extraction approach using Soxhlet extraction device and hexane and ethanol as non-polar and polar solvents at various ratios and extraction times. The highest oil and azadirachtin yields were obtained at 6 h extraction time using a 50:50 solvent mixture for both neem leaves (44.7 wt%, 720 mgAza/kgleaves) and seeds (53.5 wt%, 1045 mgAza/kgseeds), respectively.
