This essay presents some main features of the kick-off of 5G in India and Brazil extracting implication for Global South catchup. Based on some main neo-Schumpeterian contributions on long-waves, long-cycles, and catch-up, attention has been paid to the interstate competition between the US and China, the global pressures and linkages of the Indian and Brazilian National Systems of Innovation, and the development of key infrastructures and productive capabilities by the domestic and multinational firms involved in the kick-off of 5G. Two main Global South cases capturing the interrelated geopolitical and technological tensions of the 21st century transitioning capitalism are discussed.
Prevention of Atopic Asthma by Early Intervention during Childhood: Testable Approaches
( PG Holt DSc FAA ),( Peter D,Sly MD DSc ) 대한천식알레르기학회 2005 천식 및 알레르기 Vol.25 No.4
Recent research from a broad range of independent laboratories indicates that the development of persistent atopic asthma is frequently related to potentially preventable events which occur during early childhood. In particular, the combined effects of respiratory viral infections and atopic responses to aeroallergens during infancy, resulting in turn from developmental deficiencies in innate and adaptive immune function, appear to play crucial roles in asthma aetiology. If this model for asthma development is valid, then a variety of testable options exist for primary prevention of the disease. A range of these are discussed below. <P>Epigenetic regulation of imprinted genes is regarded as a highly plausible explanation for linking dietary exposures in early life with the onset of diseases during childhood and adulthood. We sought to test whether prenatal dietary supplementation with docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) during pregnancy may modulate epigenetic states at birth. This study was based on a randomized intervention trial conducted in Mexican pregnant women supplemented daily with 400 mg of DHA or a placebo from gestation <I>week 18–22</I> to parturition. We applied quantitative profiling of DNA methylation states at <I>IGF2</I> promoter 3 (<I>IGF2</I> P3), <I>IGF2</I> differentially methylated region (DMR), and <I>H19</I> DMR in cord blood mononuclear cells of the DHA-supplemented group (<I>n</I> = 131) and the control group (<I>n</I> = 130). In stratified analyses, DNA methylation levels in <I>IGF2</I> P3 were significantly higher in the DHA group than the control group in preterm infants (<I>P</I> = 0.04). We also observed a positive association between DNA methylation levels and maternal body mass index; <I>IGF2</I> DMR methylation was higher in the DHA group than the control group in infants of overweight mothers (<I>P</I> = 0.03). In addition, at <I>H19</I> DMR, methylation levels were significantly lower in the DHA group than the control group in infants of normal weight mothers (<I>P</I> = 0.01). Finally, methylation levels at <I>IGF2/H19</I> imprinted regions were associated with maternal BMI. These findings suggest that epigenetic mechanisms may be modulated by DHA, with potential impacts on child growth and development.</P>

Skin wound closure occurs when keratinocytes migrate from the edge of the wound and re-epithelialize the epidermis. Their migration takes place primarily before any vascularization is established, that is, under hypoxia, but relatively little is known regarding the factors that stimulate this migration. Hypoxia and an acidic environment are well-established stimuli for cancer cell migration. The carbonic anhydrases (CAs) contribute to tumor cell migration by generating an acidic environment through the conversion of carbon dioxide to bicarbonate and a proton. On this basis, we explored the possible role of CAs in tissue regeneration using mouse skin wound models. We show that the expression of mRNAs encoding CA isoforms IV and IX are increased (~25 × and 4 × , respectively) during the wound hypoxic period (days 2–5) and that cells expressing CAs form a bandlike structure beneath the migrating epidermis. RNA-Seq analysis suggested that the CA IV-specific signal in the wound is mainly derived from neutrophils. Due to the high level of induction of CA IV in the wound, we treated skin wounds locally with recombinant human CA IV enzyme. Recombinant CA IV significantly accelerated wound re-epithelialization. Thus, CA IV could contribute to wound healing by providing an acidic environment in which the migrating epidermis and neutrophils can survive and may offer novel opportunities to accelerate wound healing under compromised conditions.

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>We aimed to assess the personal radiofrequency electromagnetic field (RF-EMF) exposure levels of children and adults through their activities, with consideration to the body shadowing effect. We recruited 50 child-adult pairs, living in Seoul, Cheonan, and Ulsan, South Korea. RF-EMF measurements were performed between September and December 2016, using a portable exposure meter tailored to capture 14 Korean radiofrequency (RF) bands ranging from 87.5 to 5875MHz. The participants carried the device for 48h and kept a time-activity diary using a smartphone application in flight mode. To enhance accuracy of the exposure assessment, the body shadowing effect was compensated during the statistical analysis with the measured RF-EMF exposure. The compensation was conducted using the hybrid model that represents the decrease of the exposure level due to the body shadowing effect. A generalized linear mixed model was used to compare the RF-EMF exposure levels by subjects and activities. The arithmetic (geometric) means of the total power density were 174.9 (36.6) μW/m2 for all participants, 226.9 (44.6) for fathers, 245.4 (44.8) for mothers, and 116.2 (30.1) for children. By compensating for the body shadowing effect, the total RF-EMF exposure increased marginally, approximately 1.4 times. Each frequency band contribution to total RF-EMF exposure consisted of 76.7%, 2.4%, 9.9%, 5.0%, 3.3%, and 2.6% for downlink, uplink, WiFi, FM Radio, TV, and WiBro bands, respectively. Among the three regions, total RF-EMF exposure was highest in Seoul, and among the activities, it was highest in the metro, followed by foot/bicycle, bus/car, and outside. The contribution of base-station exposure to total RF-EMF exposure was the highest both in parents and children. Total and base-station RF-EMF exposure levels in Korea were higher than those reported in European countries.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> Base-station RF exposure is major contribution in Korea. </LI> <LI> Total and base-station RF exposure levels in Korea were higher than those reported in European countries and Australia. </LI> <LI> Personal RF-EMF exposure depends on environments and behavioral pattern. </LI> <LI> Reading values at the personal exposure meter are affected by a human body. </LI> <LI> Body shadowing compensated the total RF-EMF by 1.4 times. </LI> </UL> </P> <P><B>Graphical abstract</B></P> <P>[DISPLAY OMISSION]</P>
