Memories of The Last Hwaraengi, Kim Junghee

Simon Mills 한국국악학회 2020 한국음악연구 Vol.67 No.-

Kim Junghee, who passed away in sad circumstances in December 2019, was a leading light in the East Coast shaman ritual tradition-an extraordinarily skilled and dedicated man who played a vital role in leading his tradition’s transition from the old world into the new. He was the very last instrumentalist in his troupe to have been born and raised within the region’s hereditary shaman social institution-the last hwaraengi-and, as such, he fostered an identity and approach to artistry forged in a by-gone era. At the same time, he was a major player in opening up the East Coast shamanic arts to a life beyond village ritual. This article looks back over Kim’s rich life and extensive gifts, aiming to piece together a fairly detailed picture of the man and his music. It elucidates the formative factors and processes that shaped his artistry and influenced his path through life, pinpoints his various contributions as a teacher and performer, explores his distinctive personal musical style, and highlights the enormous significance of his passing for the tradition he devoted his life to. To assess these areas, the article draws extensively upon memories gathered by the author between 1999 and 2019-Kim’s own memories, the memories of others within his troupe, and also the author’s own memories of spending time with him.

Development of a multi criteria decision analysis framework for the assessment of integrated waste management options for irradiated graphite

        Abrahamsen-Mills, Liam,Wareing, Alan,Fowler, Linda,Jarvis, Richard,Norris, Simon,Banford, Anthony Korean Nuclear Society 2021 Nuclear Engineering and Technology Vol.53 No.4

An integrated waste management approach for irradiated graphite was developed during the European Commission project 'Treatment and Disposal of Irradiated Graphite and other Carbonaceous Waste'. This included the identification of potential options for the management of irradiated graphite, taking account of storage, retrieval, treatment and disposal methods. This paper describes how these options can be assessed using multi-criteria decision analysis (MCDA) for a case study relating to a generic power reactor. Criteria have been defined to account for safety, environmental, economic and socio-political factors, including radiological impact, resource usage, economic costs and risks. The impact of each option against each criterion has been assessed using data from the project and the wider literature. A linear additive approach has been used to convert the calculated impacts to scores. To account for the relative importance of the criteria, example weightings were allocated. This application has shown that MCDA approaches can be used to support complex decisions regarding irradiated graphite management, accounting for a wide range of criteria. Use of this approach by individual countries or organisations will need to account for the specific options, scores, weightings and constraints that apply, based on their national strategies, regulatory requirements and public acceptability.

      • The Durham Oriental Music Festivalandits Legacy

Keith Pratt,Simon Mills,Keith Howard 아시아음악학회 2017 Asian Musicology Vol.27 No.-

Between 1976 and 1982 the city and University of Durham, UK, hosted a series of three unprecedented festivals. Their aim was to introduce Western audiences to the traditional music of Asia by means of concerts, lectures, workshops, films and exhibitions. Countries represented by topclass artists and scholars were China, Korea, Japan, Turkey, Egypt, Iraq, Iran, India, Bangladesh, Thailand, Indonesia, Vietnam and Laos. Overcoming many difficulties, the Durham Oriental Music Festival acquired a worldwide reputation and successfully helped to promote Asian music and ethnomusicology in the West. In 2009 Durham University revived its aims by introducing a Festival of East Asian Music. More modest in scale, this annually promotes performance and study of musical themes from countries of East Asia, again putting emphasis on authenticity and high quality.

Development of integrated waste management options for irradiated graphite

        Alan Wareing,Liam Abrahamsen-Mills,Linda Fowler,Michael Grave,Richard Jarvis,Martin Metcalfe,Simon Norris,Anthony William Banford 한국원자력학회 2017 Nuclear Engineering and Technology Vol.49 No.5

The European Treatment and Disposal of Irradiated Graphite and other Carbonaceous Waste projectsought to develop best practices in the retrieval, treatment, and disposal of irradiated graphite includingother irradiated carbonaceous waste such as structural material made of graphite, nongraphitized carbonbricks, and fuel coatings. Emphasis was given on legacy irradiated graphite, as this represents a significantinventory in respective national waste management programs. This paper provides an overview ofthe characteristics of graphite irradiated during its use, primarily as a moderator material, within nuclearreactors. It describes the potential techniques applicable to the retrieval, treatment, recycling/reuse, anddisposal of these graphite wastes. Considering the lifecycle of nuclear graphite, from manufacture to finaldisposal, a number of waste management options have been developed. These options consider thetechniques and technologies required to address each stage of the lifecycle, such as segregation, treatment, recycle, and ultimate disposal in a radioactive waste repository, providing a toolbox to aid operatorsand regulators to determine the most appropriate management strategy. It is noted that nationalwaste management programs currently have, or are in the process of developing, respective approachesto irradiated graphite management. The output of the Treatment and Disposal of Irradiated Graphite andother Carbonaceous Waste project is intended to aid these considerations, rather than dictate them.

Short-Term Study on the Effects of Rosemary on Cognitive Function in an Elderly Population

        Andrew Pengelly,James Snow,Simon Y. Mills,Andrew Scholey,Keith Wesnes,Leah Reeves Butler 한국식품영양과학회 2012 Journal of medicinal food Vol.15 No.1

Rosemary (Rosmarinus officinalis L.) has traditional reputations that justify investigation for a potential role in reducing widespread cognitive decline in the elderly. A randomized, placebo-controlled, double-blinded, repeated-measures crossover study was conducted to investigate possible acute effects of dried rosemary leaf powder on cognitive performance. Twenty-eight older adults (mean age, 75 years) were tested using the Cognitive Drug Research computerized assessment system 1, 2.5, 4, and 6hours following a placebo and four different doses of rosemary. Doses were counterbalanced, and there was a 7-day washout between visits. There was a biphasic dose-dependent effect in measures of speed of memory: the lowest dose (750mg) of rosemary had a statistically significant beneficial effect compared with placebo (P= .01), whereas the highest dose (6,000mg) had a significant impairing effect (P< .01). There were significant deleterious effects on other measures of cognitive performance, although these were less consistent. Speed of memory is a potentially useful predictor of cognitive function during aging. The positive effect of the dose nearest normal culinary consumption points to the value of further work on effects of low doses over the longer term.

Pseudogout: A Rare Cause of Acute Arthritis Following Arthroscopic Anterior Cruciate Ligament Reconstruction

        Mahvash Zaman,Numaera Sabir,Simon Peter Mills,Charalambos P. Charalambous 대한슬관절학회 2015 대한슬관절학회지 Vol.27 No.3

We report a case of an acute pseudogout attack following single-bundle anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) reconstruction in a 35-year-old man. At the initial reconstruction surgery, he was found to have early degenerative changes mainly in the lateral compartment. He presented with acute onset pain and swelling following reconstruction of the ACL. Arthroscopic irrigation was performed and the synovial fluid was positive for calcium pyrophosphate crystals. A pseudogout attack must be considered in the differential diagnosis in cases of acute onset pain and swelling after arthroscopic surgery, especially with the background of degenerative knee changes, and this may signify a poorer long-term outcome.
