      • High to ultra-high power electrical energy storage

Sherrill, Stefanie A.,Banerjee, Parag,Rubloff, Gary W.,Lee, Sang Bok Royal Society of Chemistry 2011 Physical chemistry chemical physics Vol.13 No.46

<P>High power electrical energy storage systems are becoming critical devices for advanced energy storage technology. This is true in part due to their high rate capabilities and moderate energy densities which allow them to capture power efficiently from evanescent, renewable energy sources. High power systems include both electrochemical capacitors and electrostatic capacitors. These devices have fast charging and discharging rates, supplying energy within seconds or less. Recent research has focused on increasing power and energy density of the devices using advanced materials and novel architectural design. An increase in understanding of structure-property relationships in nanomaterials and interfaces and the ability to control nanostructures precisely has led to an immense improvement in the performance characteristics of these devices. In this review, we discuss the recent advances for both electrochemical and electrostatic capacitors as high power electrical energy storage systems, and propose directions and challenges for the future. We asses the opportunities in nanostructure-based high power electrical energy storage devices and include electrochemical and electrostatic capacitors for their potential to open the door to a new regime of power energy.</P> <P>Graphic Abstract</P><P>This article reviews recent advancements in electrochemical and electrostatic capacitors for high power energy storage with a focus on nanostructures and materials. <IMG SRC='http://pubs.rsc.org/services/images/RSCpubs.ePlatform.Service.FreeContent.ImageService.svc/ImageService/image/GA?id=c1cp22659b'> </P>

      • MnO2/TiN heterogeneous nanostructure design for electrochemical energy storage

Sherrill, Stefanie A.,Duay, Jonathon,Gui, Zhe,Banerjee, Parag,Rubloff, Gary W.,Lee, Sang Bok Royal Society of Chemistry 2011 Physical chemistry chemical physics Vol.13 No.33

<P>MnO2/TiN nanotubes are fabricated using facile deposition techniques to maximize the surface area of the electroactive material for use in electrochemical capacitors. Atomic layer deposition is used to deposit conformal nanotubes within an anodic aluminium oxide template. After template removal, the inner and outer surfaces of the TiN nanotubes are exposed for electrochemical deposition of manganese oxide. Electron microscopy shows that the MnO2 is deposited on both the inside and outside of TiN nanotubes, forming the MnO2/TiN nanotubes. Cyclic voltammetry and galvanostatic charge–discharge curves are used to characterize the electrochemical properties of the MnO2/TiN nanotubes. Due to the close proximity of MnO2 with the highly conductive TiN as well as the overall high surface area, the nanotubes show very high specific capacitance (662 F g−1 reported at 45 A g−1) as a supercapacitor electrode material. The highly conductive and mechanically stable TiN greatly enhances the flow of electrons to the MnO2 material, while the high aspect ratio nanostructure of TiN creates a large surface area for short diffusion paths for cations thus improving high power. Combining the favourable structural, electrical and energy properties of MnO2 and TiN into one system allows for a promising electrode material for supercapacitors.</P> <P>Graphic Abstract</P><P>Atomic layer deposition and electrochemical deposition are combined to fabricate MnO2/TiN heterogeneous nanostructures for electrochemical energy storage. <IMG SRC='http://pubs.rsc.org/services/images/RSCpubs.ePlatform.Service.FreeContent.ImageService.svc/ImageService/image/GA?id=c1cp21815h'> </P>

The Myth of the Nuclear Taboo

CLIFTON W. SHERRILL 이화여자대학교 국제통상협력연구소 2017 Asian International Studies Review Vol.18 No.1

Why have nuclear weapons not been used since 1945? Cold War studies of mutual deterrence have been challenged in recent years by constructivist notions of an evolutionary norm of nuclear non-use. Most famously characterized as the “nuclear taboo,” this argument asserts that the norm has become a constitutive component of civilized international society. Herein, I consider the underlying causal logic behind nuclear non-use, finding that it is more a product of rationalist security calculations (deterrence) and respect for the traditional norms of Just War Theory than it is an internalized redefinition of interest. With a new age of proliferation dawning, marked by both state and transnational actors who see value in shock for the sake of shock, I conclude that the norm of nuclear nonuse is under renewed threat.

Neoclassical Realism and South Korea’s Nuclear Weapons Policy

CLIFTON W. SHERRILL 이화여자대학교 국제통상협력연구소 2015 Asian International Studies Review Vol.16 No.1

This article develops a neoclassical realist model of decisionmaking that starts with the realist foundation of power, then layers on additional variables at both the domestic and individual levels. Based on a psychological conception of power, and differentiating the state, the regime, and the government, the model integrates prior neoclassical studies that emphasize elite perceptions, state structure, and strategic culture. As an illustrative example, the model is applied to South Korea’s current policymaking regarding potential acquisition of nuclear arms. While South Korea is assessed to have sufficient power to pursue nuclear weapons, the lack of military utility coupled with likely harm to economic and reputational interests suggest continued rejection of such a policy.

      • Self-Limiting Electrodeposition of Hierarchical MnO2 and M(OH)2/MnO2 Nanofibril/Nanowires: Mechanism and Supercapacitor Properties

        Duay, Jonathon,Sherrill, Stefanie A.,Gui, Zhe,Gillette, Eleanor,Lee, Sang Bok American Chemical Society 2013 ACS NANO Vol.7 No.2

<P>Hierarchical nanostructures have generated great interest in the energy, materials, and chemical sciences due to the synergic properties of their composite architectures. Herein, a hierarchical MnO2 nanofibril/nanowire array is successfully synthesized. The structure consists of a conformal layer of MnO2 nanofibrils evenly distributed on the surface of the individual MnO2 nanowires. The synthetic mechanism of this hierarchical structure is characterized by electrochemical measurements, Raman spectroscopy, EELS, and electron microscopy. This material was then investigated at slow scan rates for its charge storage mechanisms in different solvents. In aqueous electrolyte, the nanofibrils show a capacitance almost purely dedicated to double-layer and surface adsorption processes, while in an acetonitrile electrolyte, the nanofibrils’ capacitance comes mainly from a cation insertion process. This material was also tested at high scan rates in aqueous solution for its practical supercapacitor capabilities. The material shows a large capacitance of 298 F/g at 50 mV/s and 174 F/g at 250 mV/s. It also maintains 85.2% of its capacitance after 1000 cycles. The material also displays easily controllable parameters such as nanowire length, nanowire diameter, and amount of nanofibril material which is shown here to affect the capacitance dramatically.</P><P><B>Graphic Abstract</B> <IMG SRC='http://pubs.acs.org/appl/literatum/publisher/achs/journals/content/ancac3/2013/ancac3.2013.7.issue-2/nn3056077/production/images/medium/nn-2012-056077_0014.gif'></P><P><A href='http://pubs.acs.org/doi/suppl/10.1021/nn3056077'>ACS Electronic Supporting Info</A></P>

Adaptive Smith Predictor for Teleoperation of UAVs with Time-varying Internet Delay

        Christopher Thomas,Sun Yi,Shava Meadows,Ryan Sherrill 제어·로봇·시스템학회 2020 International Journal of Control, Automation, and Vol.18 No.6

Time delay in a networked control system can negatively impact the performance of the system. Dynamic networks with unknown and varying latency such as the Internet are studied. Also, experiments with teleoperation of drones and communication loops through the Internet are conducted. Smith Predictors are well known for their ability to handle time delay. Smith Predictor controllers perform well when modeled accurately and when the delay is known. The proposed method combines a delay estimation technique based on characteristic roots of delay differential equations to measure the delay with an Adaptive Smith Predictor. When the delay parameter is adjusted correctly, the negative effects caused by delay are significantly reduced. The proposed method performs satisfactory for networked systems with unknown delay and the results are validated through simulations and experimentation.

Microbiome diversity in carriers of fluoroquinolone resistant Escherichia coli

        Michael A. Liss,Robin J. Leach,Elizabeth Rourke,Allison Sherrill,Teresa Johnson-Pais,Zhao Lai,Joseph Basler,James R. White,Jan E. Patterson 대한비뇨의학회 2019 Investigative and Clinical Urology Vol.60 No.2

Purpose: Fluoroquinolone-resistant (FQR) Escherichia coli causes transrectal prostate biopsy infections. In order to reduce colonization of these bacteria in carriers, we would like to understand the surrounding microbiome to determine targets for decolonization. Materials and Methods: We perform an observational study to investigate the microbiome differences in men with and without FQR organisms found on rectal culture. A rectal swab with two culturettes was performed on men before an upcoming prostate biopsy procedure as standard of care to perform “targeted prophylaxis.” Detection of FQR was performed by the standard microbiology lab inoculates the swab onto MacConkey agar containing ciprofloxacin. The extra swab was sent for 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing (MiSeq paired-end) using the V1V2 primer. Alpha and beta-diversity analysis were performed using QIIME. We used PERMANOVA to evaluate the statistical significance of beta-diversity distances within and between groups of interest. Results: We collected 116 rectal swab samples before biopsy for 16S rRNA amplicon sequencing. We identified 18 isolates (15.5%, 18/116) that were positive and had relative reduced diversity profiles (p<0.05). Enterobacteriaceae were significantly over-represented in the FQR subjects (adjusted p=0.03). Conclusions: Microbiome analysis determined that men colonized with FQR bacteria have less diverse bacterial communities (dysbiosis), higher levels of Enterobacteriaceae and reduced levels of Prevotella disiens. These results may have implications in pre/probiotic intervention studies.
