Effects of pores and temperature on mechanics of gold nanowires using molecular dynamics

        Shen-Yung Lin,Tong Hong Wangs,Te-Hua Fang,Wen-Li Chen 한국물리학회 2010 Current Applied Physics Vol.10 No.1

The deformation mechanisms of gold nanowires with different nanopores under tension were simulated by molecular dynamics (MD). The stress–strain curves varied from different porous defects, and the tension caused dislocations to take place and slip along plane (1 1 1). Moreover, the tensile strength of the nanoporous monocrystalline gold was decreased when the simulated temperature increased. The stress concentrations factors of porous nanowires were calculated, and it was found that there was a great influence of size and model effects on the stress concentration factors.

      • Phase II study of sunitinib as second-line treatment for advanced gastric cancer

        Bang, Yung-Jue,Kang, Yoon-Koo,Kang, Won K.,Boku, Narikazu,Chung, Hyun C.,Chen, Jen-Shi,Doi, Toshihiko,Sun, Yan,Shen, Lin,Qin, Shukui,Ng, Wai-Tong,Tursi, Jennifer M.,Lechuga, Maria J.,Lu, Dongrui Ray,R Springer US 2011 Investigational new drugs Vol.29 No.6

Summary

Purpose. This phase II, open-label, multicenter study assessed the oral, multitargeted, tyrosine kinase inhibitor sunitinib in patients with advanced gastric or gastroesophageal junction adenocarcinoma who had received prior chemotherapy. Experimental design. Patients received sunitinib 50 mg/day on Schedule 4/2 (4 weeks on treatment, followed by 2 weeks off treatment). The primary endpoint was objective response rate; secondary endpoints included clinical benefit rate, duration of response, progression-free survival (PFS), overall survival (OS), pharmacokinetics, pharmacodynamics, safety and tolerability, and quality of life. Results. Of 78 patients enrolled, most had gastric adenocarcinoma (93.6%) and metastatic disease (93.6%). All were evaluable for safety and efficacy. Two patients (2.6%) had partial responses and 25 patients (32.1%) had a best response of stable disease for ≥6 weeks. Median PFS was 2.3 months (95% confidence interval [CI], 1.6–2.6 months) and median OS was 6.8 months (95% CI, 4.4–9.6 months). Grade ≥3 thrombocytopenia and neutropenia were reported in 34.6% and 29.4% of patients, respectively, and the most common non-hematologic adverse events were fatigue, anorexia, nausea, diarrhea, and stomatitis. Pharmacokinetics of sunitinib and its active metabolite were consistent with previous reports. There were no marked associations between baseline soluble protein levels, or changes from baseline, and measures of clinical outcome. Conclusions. The progression-delaying effect and manageable toxicity observed with sunitinib in this study suggest that although single-agent sunitinib has insufficient clinical value as second-line treatment for advanced gastric cancer, its role in combination with chemotherapy merits further study.

Will My Customers Come Back? A Study of Beauty Salons in Taiwan

        Yun-Yung Lin,Tzong-Ru (Jiun-Shen) Lee,Hooi Hooi Lean,Hsiang-Ying Lan 한국유통과학회 2018 유통과학연구 Vol.16 No.1

Purpose – The beauty salon industry is a highly competitive market. Every beauty salon shop aims to keep its customers satisfied and hopes that they will revisit several times. Hence, this paper investigates the key factors affecting the repurchase intention of consumers in the beauty salon industry in Taiwan. Research design, data, and methodology – We first use the content analysis of free-response narratives from beauticians to classify the key factors objectively and develop the questionnaire accordingly. We then distribute the questionnaire to 130 beauty salon consumers to complete the questionnaire. Next, the Grey Relation Analysis is employed to identify the key factors that affect the repurchase intention of consumers in the beauty salon industry. Results – From the perspectives of the beauty salon customers, the factors affecting the repurchase intention of consumers are (1) obvious treatment results, (2) the treatment space considers personal privacy, (3) the offer of promotional prices for treatment/product trials, and (4) the product knowledge of the beauticians. From the perspectives of the beauticians, the factors include (1) the treatment space is well-designed and makes the customers feel relaxed, (2) enhancement of the customer relationship, (3) the treatment space considers personal privacy, and (4) the positive service attitude of the beauticians. Conclusions – We analyze all the key factors and offer some suggestions as a conclusion.

      • The Political Interferences in Government Banks Do the Institutional Factors Matter?

        Chung-Hua Shen,Iftekhar Hasan,Chih-Yung Lin 한국재무학회 2011 한국재무학회 학술대회 Vol.2011 No.09

This study first re-investigates an old but still attractive issue: whether government-owned bank (GOB) performs inferior to the private-owned banks (POB) which is dubbed GOB effect in this study. Then, and more importantly, we explore why. Our government banks are classified into three types: GOBs that purchase distressed banks, GOBs that purchase normal banks, and GOBs that do not purchase any bank. We argue that not all three types of GOB are underperformer, that is, only GOBs purchase distressed banks are. Contrasting to the common belief, our results show that GOBs that purchase normal banks and GOBs that do not purchase any bank (after 2003) perform similar to POBs. That is, GOB effect significantly minimized when political interference is removed. Moreover, we found that POBs purchase distressed banks have similar performance to the benchmarked private banks. Thus, because both GOBs and POBs purchase distressed banks, the major difference is the presence of political factors in distressed-acquirer GOB. Accordingly, the reason of the worsened performance of GOBs is more likely a result of political intervention. Finally, we find these political interventions apparently exist in these countries no matter their country governance, corruption levels, and political rights.

Vapour–liquid–solid growth of monolayer MoS2 nanoribbons

        Li, Shisheng,Lin, Yung-Chang,Zhao, Wen,Wu, Jing,Wang, Zhuo,Hu, Zehua,Shen, Youde,Tang, Dai-Ming,Wang, Junyong,Zhang, Qi,Zhu, Hai,Chu, Leiqiang,Zhao, Weijie,Liu, Chang,Sun, Zhipei,Taniguchi, Takaaki,Os Nature Publishing Group UK 2018 Nature Materials Vol.17 No.6

Chemical vapour deposition of two-dimensional materials typically involves the conversion of vapour precursors to solid products in a vapour-solid-solid mode. Here, we report the vapour-liquid-solid growth of monolayer MoS2, yielding highly crystalline ribbons with a width of few tens to thousands of nanometres. This vapour-liquid-solid growth is triggered by the reaction between MoO3 and NaCl, which results in the formation of molten Na-Mo-O droplets. These droplets mediate the growth of MoS2 ribbons in the 'crawling mode' when saturated with sulfur. The locally well-defined orientations of the ribbons reveal the regular horizontal motion of the droplets during growth. Using atomic-resolution scanning transmission electron microscopy and second harmonic generation microscopy, we show that the ribbons are grown homoepitaxially on monolayer MoS2 with predominantly 2H-or 3R-type stacking. Our findings highlight the prospects for the controlled growth of atomically thin nano-structure arrays for nanoelectronic devices and the development of unique mixed-dimensional structures.

Study on Cellar Behaviors on Different Nanostructures by Nanoporous Alumina Template

Chiung-Fang Huang,Yung-Kang Shen,Hsin-Chung Cheng,Yi Lin,Chih-Wei Wu 한국정밀공학회 2014 International Journal of Precision Engineering and Vol. No.

Nanoporous anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) templates are fabricated using an nodization method. The mean diameters of nanoporousanodic aluminum oxide templates are 100 nm and 200 nm by various processing parameters of the anodization method. A moldedplastic thin film nanostructure is fabricated by nanoimprinting using the AAO template as a mold insert. The surface properties ofthe molded plastic thin film are discussed using various nanoimprinting process parameters. Contact angles of the molded plastic thinfilm with the nanostructure exceed those without the nanostructure. The molded plastic thin films with a nanostructure and ahydrophobic surface are formed, and their contact angles exceed 90o. This study observes the behavior of osteoblast-like cells (MG63)cultured on nanostructure thin films, i.e., AAO, polylactic acid (PLA) and polycarbonate (PC). Cell growth behavior indicates thatthe AAO template with a 200 nm nanostructure is best. This study shows that cell adhesion and spreading are influenced by surfacetopography in the nanometer feature.
