A novel bifunctional dye composed of spirobenzopyran and a cinnamoyl moiety was prepared and its photochromic behavior under the illumination of monochromatic UV light was investigated. This colorless bifunctional dye exhibits typical photochromism in both the film and in solution, through the structural and geometrical transformation from spirobenzopyran to merocyanine accompanied by a photocrosslinking reaction between the cinnamoyl moieties. Two kinds of photochemical reaction were selectively achieved by irradiation with monochromatic UV light at wavelengths of 275 and 365 nm, respectively. The effect of the selective photochemical reaction on the photochromism of the dye and its decaying behavior was investigated.
Synthesis, Characterization, and Properties of Ethoxylated Azo Dyes

The nonionic surfactant properties of ethoxylated azo dyes, such ai cloud point and surface tension have been investigated. The synthesized ethoxylated azo dyes could dye polyester fabric without any special pre-treatment. When the average number of ethylene oxide (EO) in the ethoxylated azo dye reached 6, its fixation could exceed $90^{\circ}C$ from the thermosol dyeing process. The average degree of condensation of ethylene glycol in the chain was interrelated with the dyeing results and did not affect on the maximum absorption wavelength (λmax) of the polyoxyethylene dye. When the average length of polyoxyethylene chain decreased, the molecular weight of dyes became smaller and the fixation of dyes was improved.
Cataytic Hydrogenation of o-Nitrochlorbenzene to 3,3'-Dichlorobenzidine

2,2'-Dichlorohydroazobenzene was prepared by selective hydrogenation of o-nitrochlorobenzene with hydrogen in the presence of 0.8% and 5% Pd/C catalyst. O-Chloroaniline was a minor product in the catalytic hydrogenation of o-nitrochlorobenzene. The effects of base, Pd/C catalyst, and co-catalyst were discussed on catalytic hydrogenation. 2,2'-Dichlorohydroazobenzene, as an intermediate, was rearranged to 3,3'-dichlorobenzidine after reacting with HCl. It was shown that selectivity of catalytic hydrogenation of o-nitro-chlorobenzene is affected strongly by concentration of base, Pd/C catalyst, and co-catalyst. $^1Hand^{13}C$NMR spectroscopy confirmed the chemical structures of 2,2'-dichlorohydrazobenzene and 3,3'-dichlorobenzidine.
Spiropyrans for Memories and Switches

In the present review, we consider four topics relating to potential applications of spiropyran-merocyarune systems in memones and switches. The first topic is the formation of organized structures, such as aggregates and mesophases whose optical properties, including nonlinear ones, can be affected by an electric field. The second topic is the nonlinear optical properties of the photochromic systems, and the third topic is ea-time holography, employing photochromic spiropyran system. The last topic is about three-dimensional optical data storage, using spiropyran derivatives as photochromic materials
