Removal of Ammonia from Swine Manure by Mixed Microorganisms

This study was conducted to investigate the characteristics and concentrations of ammonia produced from the livestock swine manure treated with mixed microorganisms. Odor generating device was made by volume of about 1.12 L for sampling ammonia odor. When swine manure was placed in reactor, average concentration of ammonia was about 310 ppmv out of the range from 295 ppmv to 340 ppmv. Removal efficiencies showed 48% to 73% after 24 hr as compared to initial level before spraying. The persistence of efficiency in two treatments (2 and 5) were 66.7% and 55.9%, respectively that retained for the first seven days. Among the mixed microorganisms, the treatment 2 (mixed microorganisms) showed the best efficiency of 63.3% to 86.7%. To evaluate the effects of 5 kinds of spray mixed microorganisms, the experiments were conducted and based spray treatments without spray mixed microorganisms on swine manure. Swine manure were subjected to a 7-day reactors in which the effects of the spray mixed microorganisms on the ammonia emission were compared. The ammonia gas emission was measured for every day. Ammonia emission from the swine manure with the spray mixed microorganisms was lower than that of the manure in the control treatment (without spray mixed microorganisms). In ammonia removal efficiencies of the experimental groups, some mixed microorganisms showed from 55.9% to 86.7% removal efficiencies throughout the entire period as compared to the control group. On the other hand, initial reduction of ammonia in some treatments (mixed microorganisms) was effective temporarily.

An ectoparasitoid natural enemy, Cephalonomia gallicola (Ashmead 1887) (Hymenoptera: Bethylidae) was found in the mass rearing colonies of cigarette beetle, Lasioderma serricorne (Fabricius 1792) (Coleoptera: Anobiidae), under laboratory condition. As the first record in Korea, the description of the apterous female is provided for the macerated microslide specimens, with the detail illustration for the taxonomic characteristics and the biometric data.

Age-related change in the frequency of spontaneous sister chromatid exchange (SCE) and chromosornal aberrations were investigated in bone marrow cells of accelerated senescence-resistant mice (SAM R1) and senescence accelerated ones (SAM P1). And the effect of chronic treatment of ginseng extract (Panax ginseng C.A. Meyer) on these chromosomal abnormalities was tested in SAM P1. SCE frequency in the cells was progressively increased with age in both mice, but it was consistently higher in SAM P1 than in SAM R1 at all corresponding age. Chromosomal aberrations were, however, not significantly changed with age except that it was slightly increased in only aged SAM P1. Interestingly, the rate of these genetic instabilities in SAM P1 was remarkably retarded by long-term administration of ginseng water extract (0.05% in drinking water). These results suggest that frequency of spontaneous SCE in bone marrow cells increase in parallel with senescence of the mice, and SAM P1 is in the condition of being more exposed than SAM R1 to DNA damaging factors. These also indicate that long-term treatment of ginseng may reduce the genetic damage.

The ectoparasitic beetle, Dastarcus helophoroides (Fairmaire), was observed for the first time in Korea as a result of a study of the natural enemies of Monochamus alternatus Hope and M. saltuarius Gebler, the vector of the pine wood nematode (Bursaphelenchus xylophilus (Steiner & Buhner)). Diagnostic illustrations are provided and the biology and host range of D. helophoroides (Fairmaire) are reviewed.

Tetanus has high lethality and can cause serious complication, so it is very important to have a quick and exact checkup and treatment. In this study, we conducted a study about clinical characteristics and types of tetanus patients in Daegu Emergency Medical Center and we studied possibility of Tetanos Quick Stick (TQS) as a selective check up to treat tentanus by comparing the results of local checkup kit measured from tetanus quick stick developed to check up tetanus antibody titer and results measured from ELISA (Enzyme-Linked Immunosorbent Assay). The result of the study showed that tetanus happens more to males, and by looking at season, tetanus happened most in summer (from June-August) as 19 cases (45.3%), and when patients come to the emergency medical center, the diagnosis name was electrolyte imbalance 14 cases (33.3%), peripheral nerve 11 cases (26.2%), Meningitis 8 cases (19.0%), drug addiction 7 cases (16.7%), and the patients who are diagnosed as tetanus at the beginning of hospitalization was 2 cases (4.8%). The result of TQS usefulness by comparing with ELISA, in TQS, 42 people was positive and 478 people was negative. it was positive when the result was over 0.1 IU/mL, 48 people was ELISA positive while 472 people was negative. TQS checkup has accuracy of 98%, sensitivity of 83.3%, specificity of 99.5%, positive predictability of 95.2% and negative predictability of 98.3%. The evaluation of current immunity statuses of tetanus patients is available for TQS checkup, and it has an advantage of preventing side effects coming from the injection of unnecessary vaccine and immunoglobulin, and it is thought that it can give help to emergency checkup and treatment at the beginning.

It is important to check the types of drugs when treating acute drug intoxication. This study researches the clinical characteristics and types of patients hospitalized in emergency medical center for drug addiction in 2009 and 2010. By applying a drug addiction selecting kit, it studied the flexibility and clinical efficiency during diagnosis and treatment. The study result shows, among thedrugs causing addiction, Sedative accounts for 34.4%, Herdicide 23.5%, Analgesic 17.2%, Insectide7.8% and else 17.2%. Sedative showed the highest proportion both in 2009 and 2010. Among the drug addicted patients, 39 cases did not know that the drugs are poisonous and among them, the drug addiction selecting kit was positive in 32 cases (82.0%). In 42 cases where addiction was suspicious, 25 cases (59.5%) were positive in the drug addiction selecting kit. In 57 cases of using drug addiction selecting kits, the cases in which benzodiazepine was positive, were 30 and the most frequently cases were as follows; Tricyclic Antidepressants (TCA) 13 cases, Amphetamines 3 cases, barbiturate 3 cases, and piate 3 cases. In the district using drug addiction kit meaningfully had Flumazenil injection much greater impact than the one not using the kit. This proves the efficiency of the kit (p<0.05). The uses of drug addiction selecting kits are for acute drug intoxicated patients and for providing objective and scientific information when emergency medical doctor are checking unchecked poisoning drugs. It is considered that drug addiction selecting kits would give help when treating the early stage of drug addicted patients in emergency medical treatment.

Several 3'-fluoro analogues, la, lb, and lc of selective and potent adenosine A₃ receptor agonist, Cl-IB-MECA were synthesized from D-xylose via highly regioselective opening of lyxo-epoxides, 8a and 8b with fluoride anion. Compared to the high binding affinity of CI-IB-MECA to the A₃ adenosine receptor, the corresponding 3'-fluoro derivative showed remarkably decreased binding affinity, indicating that 3'-hydroxyl group acts as hydrogen bonding acceptor, not hydrogen bonding donor like fluorineatom in binding to the A₃ adenosine receptor.
