How Korean Protestant Churches Integrate Different Ethnic Groups : A Case Study of Monolingual and Bilingual Multiethnic Churches in Korea

Saul Serna Segura,Won Dong Kim 지역사회학회 2017 지역사회학 Vol.18 No.2

According to the Korean Ministry of Justice, the number of resident foreigners in South Korea topped the two million mark as of June 2016, accounting for 3.4 percent of the total population. Statistics show that South Korea might now be regarded as early stage of a multicultural society. We analyze how Korean Christian pastors and Protestant churches respond to this growing ethnic and cultural diversity. The literature discusses two general models: advocacy and homogeneous. In the advocacy model, church-based NGOs promote migrant rights and welfare in Korea. In the homogeneous model (building on the homogeneous-unit principle), churches offer separate services for migrants in terms of both language and culture. The advocacy model is criticized as paternalistic and the homogeneous model as separatist. In the past, the first model was popular, but now the second model is the prevailing one to form Korean multicultural congregations. We propose the use of an emerging third model called as the bridging model, which actively links ethnic-cultural divisions through a shared religious identity. We apply the homogeneous and bridging models to two small, multiethnic churches in Korea. River church offers monolingual (English) worship for persons relatively fluent in (or actively learning) the English language. Light church offers bilingual (English/Korean) service and welcomes speakers of either language. The potential reach of River is restricted, whereas Light’s potential includes nearly the entire population of South Korea. In the Korean context, the bridging model shows both higher challenges and more benefits for church members, and for the integration of foreign residents into the host society.

Inhibition of miR31 and miR92a as Oncological Biomarkers in RKO Colon Cancer Cells Treated with Kaempferol-3-O-Glycoside Isolated from Black Bean

        Janet Alejandra Gutierrez-Uribe,Mauricio Salinas-Santander,Delia Serna-Guerrero,Sergio Roman Othon Serna-Saldivar,Ana Maria Rivas-Estilla,Clara Patricia Rios-Ibarra 한국식품영양과학회 2020 Journal of medicinal food Vol.23 No.1

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are small molecules of 19–23 nucleotides of RNA that act as regulators of the expression of proteins in eukaryotic cells. Currently, the participation of miRNAs in the development of different types of cancer has been observed. To evaluate the inhibitory effect of kaempferol-3-O-glycoside on the expression of oncological biomarkers, miR31 and miR92a in a colon cancer cell line (RKO) were analyzed. Cells were cultured and treated with 1 mM kaempferol-3-O-glycoside isolated from black bean. Expression levels of miR31 and miR92a were evaluated by real-time PCR using TaqMan probes; in addition, two oncogenes (KRAS and c-MYC) and two tumor suppressors (AMP-activated protein kinase [AMPK] and adenomatous tumors of polyposis coli [APC]) were quantified to validate the biological effects; normalization of expression levels were carried out by 2−ΔΔCt. Results were analyzed by one-way ANOVA. The expression levels of miR31, miR92a, KRAS oncogene, and the c-MYC transcription factor were subexpressed upon 72 h post-treatment with kaempferol-3-O-glycoside compared with the control without treatment (P < .05); in contrast, the tumor suppressor genes AMPK (∼4.85, P = .005) and APC (∼2.71, P = .066) tumor suppressors genes were overexpressed. Our results showed the inhibitory effect of isolated black bean flavonoid kaempferol-3-O-glycoside on cancer biomarkers: miR31 and miR92a; based on our results, this flavonoid may have interesting nutritional, therapeutic, and/or prophylactic applications to combat colon cancer.

Stemphylium Leaf Blight of Garlic (Allium sativum) in Spain: Taxonomy and In Vitro Fungicide Response

Galvez, Laura,Gil-Serna, Jessica,Garcia, Marta,Iglesias, Concepcion,Palmero, Daniel The Korean Society of Plant Pathology 2016 Plant Pathology Journal Vol.32 No.5

The most serious aerial disease of garlic is leaf blight caused by Stemphylium spp. Geographical variation in the causal agent of this disease is indicated. Stemphylium vesicarium has been reported in Spain, whereas S. solani is the most prevalent species recorded in China. In this study, Stemphylium isolates were obtained from symptomatic garlic plants sampled from the main Spanish production areas. Sequence data for the ITS1-5.8S-ITS2 region enabled assignation of the isolates to the Pleospora herbarum complex and clearly distinguished the isolates from S. solani. Conidial morphology of the isolates corresponded to that of S. vesicarium and clearly discriminated them from S. alfalfae and S. herbarum on the basis of the size and septation pattern of mature conidia. Conidial morphology as well as conidial length, width and length:width ratio also allowed the Spanish isolates to be distinguished from S. botryosum and S. herbarum. Control of leaf blight of garlic is not well established. Few studies are available regarding the effectiveness of chemical treatments to reduce Stemphylium spp. incidence on garlic. The effectiveness of nine fungicides of different chemical groups to reduce Stemphylium mycelial growth in vitro was tested. Boscalid + pyraclostrobin (group name, succinate dehydrogenase inhibitors + quinone outside inhibitors), iprodione (dicar-boximide), and prochloraz (demethylation inhibitors) were highly effective at reducing mycelial growth in S. vesicarium with $EC_{50}$ values less than 5 ppm. In general, the effectiveness of the fungicide was enhanced with increasing dosage.

Present and Future of Air Navigation: PBN Operations and Supporting Technologies

Manuel López-Lago,José Serna,Rafael Casado,Bermúdez Aurelio 한국항공우주학회 2020 International Journal of Aeronautical and Space Sc Vol.21 No.2

The present work reviews the new concept of operation that will be soon implemented in SESAR and NextGen (January 2020) using new state-of-the-art technology mainly based on onboard avionics: data link equipment, broadcast and surveillance systems, and Global Navigation Satellite System (GNSS) area augmentation. One of the main improvements of Performance-Based Navigation (PBN) is the use of satellites and more precise and accurate onboard instruments than current standard avionics related to ground-based navigation aids (VOR, NDB, DME, etc.). Air navigation systems have been without mayor updates for nearly 40 years, when most Very High Frequency Omnidirectional Range (VOR) and Tactical Air Navigation (TACAN) systems were implemented worldwide in the civil and military fields, respectively. These standard navigation systems lack new required performance navigation and required big deal of maintenance, especially in redundant systems. Recently, the development of new and precise GNSS and communication systems has allowed their use on different scenarios: Instrumental Flight Rules (IFR) departures, initial and final approaches, etc. Additionally, in several international airports, Ground Based Augmentation System (GBAS) approaches have been already successfully tested and implemented. Related to GBAS, the Automatic Dependent Surveillance Broadcast (ADS-B) is a cooperative technology that enhances pilots and controllers’ situation awareness, since ADS-B broadcasts own and other aircraft position. Controller Pilot Data Link Communications (CPDLC) may be another key element of the PBN concept of operations (CONOPS), since it provides air–ground data communications for the air traffic control (ATC) service and the aircrew, reducing risks associated to human factor: poor speaking, radio congestion, message confusion, standardization, etc. The main goal of this review is to present the PBN concept and the potentially supporting Communication, Navigation and Surveillance (CNS) systems, in the context of the NextGen and SESAR Air Traffic Management (ATM) modernization programmes.

Tourism and sustainable development goal-5: A pathway for women’s empowerment

Bipithalal Balakrishnan Nair,Saúl Serna Segura 한국관광연구학회 2021 관광연구저널 Vol.35 No.4

This paper explores the role of tourism in women’s empowerment through the framework of Sustainable Development Goal 5 (SDG 5). The targets and criteria of SDG 5 were used as a gap analysis tool to understand the status of accomplishment of women’s enablement by taking the Kumarakom tourism model as an example. Both primary and secondary data were incorporated in this study. Thirteen semi-structured interviews and sixteen field visits were conducted. Secondary data used were government documents, online resources, and newspaper articles. Leximancer software was used to analyze the data collected. The findings offer evidence indicating that tourism in Kumarakom enriched the economic, socio-cultural, and psychological status of womenfolk in the region. This has been attained through grassroots level planning and initiatives such as women’s self-help groups. The results suggest that the Kumarakom tourism model contributed to and attained many of the criteria and targets provided by the United Nations guidelines of SDG 5. At the same time, this study identified room for improvement. Also, we argue that the criteria like SDG 5.1 need to be revised considering the broader cultural framework for land ownership and related practices. This study addressed a relevant yet unaddressed issue of women’s empowerment through tourism and issues of the measurement framework of SDG 5.

Analytical model for transfer length prediction of 13 mm prestressing strand

        Marti-Vargas, J.R.,Arbelaez, C.A.,Serna-Ros, P.,Navarro-Gregori, J.,Pallares-Rubio, L. Techno-Press 2007 Structural Engineering and Mechanics, An Int'l Jou Vol.26 No.2

An experimental investigation to determine the transfer length of a seven-wire prestressing strand in different concretes is presented in this paper. A testing technique based on the analysis of bond behaviour by means of measuring the force supported by the prestressing strand on a series of specimens with different embedment lengths has been used. An analytical bond model to calculate the transfer length from an inelastic bond stress distribution along the transfer length has been obtained. A relationship between the plastic bond stress for transfer length and the concrete compressive strength at the time of prestress transfer has been found. An equation to predict the average and both the lower bound and the upper bound values of transfer length is proposed. The experimental results have not only been compared with the theoretical prediction from proposed equations in the literature, but also with experimental results obtained by several researchers.

Diagnosis and Integrated Management of Fruit Rot in Cucurbita argyrosperma, Caused by Sclerotium rolfsii

José Francisco Díaz Nájera,Jaime Sahagún Castellanos,Mateo Vargas Hernández,Sergio Ayvar Serna,Omar Guadalupe Alvarado Gómez,Clemente Villanueva Verduzco,Marcelo Acosta Ramos 한국식물병리학회 2018 Plant Pathology Journal Vol.34 No.3

Fruit rot is the principal phytopathological problem of pipiana pumpkin (Cucurbita argyrosperma Huber) in the state of Guerrero. The aims of this research were to 1) identify the causal agent of southern blight on pumpkin fruits by morphological, pathogenic, and molecular analysis (ITS1, 5.8S, ITS2); 2) evaluate in vitro Trichoderma spp. strains and chemical fungicides; and 3) evaluate under rainfed field conditions, the strains that obtained the best results in vitro, combined with fungicides during two crop cycles. Number of commercial and non-commercial fruits at harvest, and seed yield (kg ha-1) were registered. Morphological, pathogenic and molecular characterization identified Sclerotium rolfsii as the causal agent of rot in pipiana pumpkin fruits. Now, in vitro conditions, the highest inhibition of S. rolfsii were obtained by Trichoderma virens strain G-41 (70.72%), T. asperellum strain CSAEGro-1 (69%), and the fungicides metalaxyl (100%), pyraclostrobin (100%), quintozene (100%), cyprodinil + fludioxonil (100%), and prochloraz (100%). Thiophanate-methyl only delayed growth (4.17%). In field conditions, during the spring-summer 2015 cycle, T. asperellum strain CSAEGro-1 + metalaxyl, and T. asperellum + cyprodinil + fludioxonil, favored the highest number of fruits and seed yield in the crop.
