Microbial exopolysaccharide (EPS) is a biothickener that can be added to a wide variety of food products, where it serves as a viscosifying, stabilizing, emulsifying, and gelling agent. The objective of this study was to investigate the optimum conditions of pH, incubation temperature, and whey protein concentration (WPC) for EPS production by Lactobacillus rhamnosus ATCC 9595. We found that maximal EPS production was achieved at a pH of 5.5 and temperature of 37℃. At the same fermentation conditions, EPS production was affected by the addition of L. rhamnosus GG (a weak-EPS producer). After growth for 24 hr, total EPS production was 583±15.4 mg/L in the single culture system, and 865±22.6 mg/L in the co-culture system with L. rhamnosus GG. Based on the presence of WPC, EPS production dramatically increased from 583±15.4 (under no WPC supplementation) to 1,011±14.7 mg/L (under supplementation with 1.0% WPC). These results suggest that WPC supplementation and the co-culture systems coupled with small portions of weak-EPS producing strain can play an important role in the enhancement of EPS production.

최근 목구조의 규모제한이 폐지되면서 중대형 목조건축 시장이 확대될 것으로 기대된다. 그러나 5층 이상 건축의 경우 2시간 내화구조가 필요하지만 목구조는 2시간 내화구조가 없어 모두 고비용 장시간의 내화구조 인정절차를 받아야 한다. 본 연구에서는 내화구조 인정절차를 간소화하기 위해 철골구조에서 사용하는 폼형 내화피복도료와 같이 목구조에도 내화를 전적으로 담당하는 내화피복설계를 적용해보고자 하였다. 내화피복설계가 가능하려면 구조부인 목구조가 화염에 의한 구조적 손실이 없어야 한다. 따라서 본 연구에서는 화재에 버티는 방화석고보드 외에 목구조의 표면을 화염으로부터 보호하기 위한 목섬유단열재를 적용하여 내화피복에 의한 2시간 내화성능을 확보하고자 하였다. CLT 벽체의 일반적인 내화피복방식은 방화석고보드에 유리섬유를 적용하는 방식이다. 개선된 피복방식으로 방화석고보드에 목섬유를 적용하여 표준화염조건에서 2시간 내화시험을 진행하였다. 기존 유리섬유를 활용한 내화피복 방식은 내화성능은 확보하였지만 구조부가 일부 탄화되어 내화피복설계는 적용할 수 없는 것으로 나타났다. 반면, 19㎜방화석고보드 2매와 30㎜목섬유단열재를 적용한 CLT 벽체는 2시간 내화성능을 발휘하면서 목재 표면의 구조적 손상이 나타나지 않아 내화피복설계 가능성을 확인하였다.
Initial Experience of High-Volume Plasma Exchange In Patients with Acute Liver Failure

Aims: High-volume plasma exchange (HVP) defined as exchange of 8-12 or 15% of ideal body weight with fresh frozen plasma has shown promising results in improving survival of patients with acute liver failure (ALF). However, real-life clinical evidences are still limited. The aim of this study was to report our initial experience of using HVP as a bridge treatment in patients with ALF. Methods: We retrospectively reviewed 32 consecutive patients who were enlisted for liver transplantation (LT) due to ALF between 2013 and 2020 at Samsung Medical Center in Korea. HVP was initiated in patients with ALF since May 2016 at our institution. Results: During study period, 16 Patients received HVP. After HVP, coagulopathy (prothrombin time, INR, 4.46 [2.32-6.02] vs. 1.48 [1.33-1.76], P<0.05), total bilirubin (22.6 [9.1-26.4] vs. 8.9 [5.6-11.3], P<0.05), ALT (506 [341-1963] vs. 120 [88- 315], P<0.05), and ammonia level (130.6 [123.7-143.8] vs 98.2 [84.2-116.5], P=0.033) were improved. Improvement in hepatic encephalopathy grade was observed in four patients, including three case of spontaneous recovery. The overall survival was better in patients who received HVP than that in patients who did not receive HVP (survival rate: 93.8% vs. 68.8% at 30 days) without overlap in survival curve between the two groups, although the difference between the two was statistically marginal (P=0.068). Among 18 patients with high SOFA score (≥13), the overall survival was significantly better for those who received HVP than those did not (90.9% vs. 28.6%, P=0.003). Conclusions: Initial clinical experience with HVP suggests that HVP can be a viable option to improve outcome for patients presenting with ALF, especially for those with high SOFA score.
Conjugated Linoleic Acid (CLA) Production in the Rumen -Roles of Butyrivibrio fibrisolvens A38

Conjugated linoleic acid (CLA) is currently under intensive investigation due to its health benefits. A great deal of interest has been paid to the possible health-promoting roles of CLA, but there are not many studies available on the mechanism of CLA production by ruminal microorganisms. CLA is produced as an intermediate of the characteristic biohydrogenation process of linoleic acid(LA) in the rumen and its production has direct relationship to numerous environmental factors including particle association, substrate concentration, forage-to-grain ratio, pH, ionopore, bacterial cell density, etc. Some of these factors were known to affect hydrogenating activities of Butyrivibrio fibrisolvens A38 which is an active rumen bacterium in CLA production. Dairy cow is a main source of CLA, and its level could be increased by dietary manipulation changing the physiological environment of rumen bacteria such as B. fibrisolvens A38. Therefore, the effects of various factors on. ruminal biohydrogenation should be carefully considered to optimize not only CLA production, but also other fatty acid metabolism, both of which are directly affecting nutritional quality and functionality of dairy products. In this review, the relationship between various environmental factors and ruminal CLA production is discussed focusing on the CLA production of B. fibrisolvens A38.

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>We introduce a class of repetition invariant geometric means and obtain corresponding contractive barycentric maps of integrable Borel probability measures on the Cartan–Hadamard Riemannian manifold of positive definite matrices. They retain most of the properties of the Cartan barycenter and lead to the conclusion that there are infinitely many distinct contractive barycentric maps. Inequalities from the derived geometric means including the Yamazaki inequality and unitarily invariant norm inequalities are presented.</P>
Oppenheim and Schur Type Inequalities for Khatri-Rao Products of Positive Definite Matrices

We show that <B>G</B> is positive semidefinite if and only if the family of <SUB> A 1 </SUB> , … , <SUB> A m </SUB> is Γ-commuting; it can be transformed to a commuting family of positive definite matrices by a congruence transformation. This result via Γ-commuting families provides not only a kind of positive semidefinite block matrices but also a new extremal characterization of two variable geometric mean in terms of multivariate block matrices.</P>
Distributivity on the Gyrovector Spaces

As a vector space provides a fundamental tool for the study of Euclidean geometry, a gyrovector space provides an algebraic tool for the study of hyperbolic geometry. In general, the gyrovector spaces do not satisfy the distributivity with scalar multiplication. In this article, we see under what condition the distributivity with scalar multiplication is satisfied.
