High Performance Steel Girders with Tubular Flanges

        Bong-Gyun Kim,Richard Sause 한국강구조학회 2005 International Journal of Steel Structures Vol.5 No.3

fatigue tests on full-scale stel orthotropic deck panels prior to the final design and production of replacement panels. Duringthe first test program, a protype and an as-built section were tested. Fatigue cracking was detected at several types of fatiguesensitive welded conections, resulting in design changes, repair procedures, aditional testing. Ultimately, this research led toa revision of the AASHTO LRFD design specifications on steel orthotropic decks. During the second test program, a prototypein other connections where stresses were high as a result of the extreme axle loads that were simulated. Evaluations were madeof the behavior, fatigue resistance, and adequacy of connection details applied to both test decks.

Real-time large-scale hybrid testing for seismic performance evaluation of smart structures

        Mercan, Oya,Ricles, James,Sause, Richard,Marullo, Thomas Techno-Press 2008 Smart Structures and Systems, An International Jou Vol.4 No.5

Numerous devices exist for reducing or eliminating seismic damage to structures. These include passive dampers, semi-active dampers, and active control devices. The performance of structural systems with these devices has often been evaluated using numerical simulations. Experiments on structural systems with these devices, particularly at large-scale, are lacking. This paper describes a real-time hybrid testing facility that has been developed at the Lehigh University NEES Equipment Site. The facility enables real-time large-scale experiments to be performed on structural systems with rate-dependent devices, thereby permitting a more complete evaluation of the seismic performance of the devices and their effectiveness in seismic hazard reduction. The hardware and integrated control architecture for hybrid testing developed at the facility are presented. An application involving the use of passive elastomeric dampers in a three story moment resisting frame subjected to earthquake ground motions is presented. The experiment focused on a test structure consisting of the damper and diagonal bracing, which was coupled to a nonlinear analytical model of the remaining part of the structure (i.e., the moment resisting frame). A tracking indictor is used to track the actuator ability to achieve the command displacement during a test, enabling the quality of the test results to be assessed. An extension of the testbed to the real-time hybrid testing of smart structures with semi-active dampers is described.

Survival analysis of endometrial cancer patients with cervical stromal involvement

        Jonathan E. Frandsen,William T. Sause,Mark K. Dodson,Andrew P. Soisson,Thomas W. Belnap,David K. Gaffney 대한부인종양학회 2014 Journal of Gynecologic Oncology Vol.25 No.2

Objective: Stage II endometrial cancer is relatively uncommon. There is no consensus for appropriate adjuvant therapy in endometrial cancer patients with cervical stromal involvement (International Federation of Gynecology and Obstetrics [FIGO] stage II). This study investigates how adjuvant treatments and tumor characteristics influence overall survival (OS) and disease-free survival (DFS) in stage II patients in order to establish better treatment guidelines. Methods: This multi-institution, Institutional Review Board approved, study is a retrospective review of 40 endometrial cancer patients with cervical stromal involvement treated from 1993 to 2009. Kaplan-Meier estimates were used to evaluate OS and DFS. Results: OS was 85% at three years and 67% at five years. There were no significant differences in age, histology, depth of invasion, comorbid conditions, surgical staging or recurrence between patients who received radiation therapy (RT) and those who did not. However, patients with FIGO grade 1 cancers were less likely to receive RT (p=0.007). Patients treated with RT had a similar 5 year OS (n=33, 69%) to those treated with surgery only (n=7, 60%, p=0.746). There were no OS differences when evaluating by grade, histology, or depth of invasion between patients who did and did not receive RT. Four patients recurred: three were locoregional failures only, and one failed locally and distant. Conclusion: Patients receiving RT had higher grade tumors. Despite this, OS was comparable between the RT and the no RT cohorts. Local failure was the predominant pattern of failure. Endometrial cancer patients with cervical stromal involvement likely receive better locoregional control with the addition of adjuvant RT and we continue to advocate for RT in most cases.

Data Model for Hybrid Structural Experiments

        이창호,토마스 마룰로,리차드 소스,Lee, Chang-Ho,Marullo, Thomas,Sause, Richard Computational Structural Engineering Institute of 2009 한국전산구조공학회논문집 Vol.22 No.5

The hybrid approach for structural experiments decomposes a structure into independent substructures that can be tested or simulated. The results from the decomposed substructures are combined to predict the behaviors of the entires structure. The hybrid approach is especially useful for the hybrid pseudo-dynamic tests that overcome the limitations of size of a test structure present in a shaking table test. The development of a computer system for the hybrid experiment requires a data model that formally organizes the information involved in the hybrid experiments. This paper provides the data model for representing the information involved in the hybrid experiments, by modifying the classes and attributes for the hybrid experiments in the Lehigh Model that is one of the data models for structural experiments. The data model for the hybrid experiments includes the classes for the physical substructures being tested and the analytical substructures being analyzed, and the simulation coordinator managing the overall experiments. Some objects for classes are implemented as an example to show the links among the classes. The data model presented in this paper can be applied for developing a computer system that helps structural engineers and researchers store, share, and access the information for the hybrid experiments.

      • Modeling of composite MRFs with CFT columns and WF beams

        Ricardo A. Herrera,Teerawut Muhummud,James M. Ricles,Richard SAuse 국제구조공학회 2022 Steel and Composite Structures, An International J Vol.43 No.3

A vast amount of experimental and analytical research has been conducted related to the seismic behavior and performance of concrete filled steel tubular (CFT) columns. This research has resulted in a wealth of information on the component behavior. However, analytical and experimental data for structural systems with CFT columns is limited, and the well-known behavior of steel or concrete structures is assumed valid for designing these systems. This paper presents the development of an analytical model for nonlinear analysis of composite moment resisting frame (CFT-MRF) systems with CFT columns and steel wide-flange (WF) beams under seismic loading. The model integrates component models for steel WF beams, CFT columns, connections between CFT columns and WF beams, and CFT panel zones. These component models account for nonlinear behavior due to steel yielding and local buckling in the beams and columns, concrete cracking and crushing in the columns, and yielding of panel zones and connections. Component tests were used to validate the component models. The model for a CFT-MRF considers second order geometric effects from the gravity load bearing system using a lean-on column. The experimental results from the testing of a four-story CFT-MRF test structure are used as a benchmark to validate the modeling procedure. An analytical model of the test structure was created using the modeling procedure and imposeddisplacement analyses were used to reproduce the tests with the analytical model of the test structure. Good agreement was found at the global and local level. The model reproduced reasonably well the story shear-story drift response as well as the column, beam and connection moment-rotation response, but overpredicted the inelastic deformation of the panel zone.

Osteonecrosis of the jaw in the era of targeted therapy and immunotherapy in oncology

        Antonio Fabrizio Nifosì,Mariateresa Zuccarello,Lorenzo Nifosì,Vanessa Hervas Saus,Gianfilippo Nifosì 대한구강악안면외과학회 2019 대한구강악안면외과학회지 Vol.45 No.1

Osteonecrosis of the jaw (ONJ) is a well-known pathological condition in oncology derived from the use of bisphosphonates (BPs) and denosumab. Many molecular and immunological targets have been introduced for daily use in cancer treatment in recent years; consequently, new cases of ONJ have been reported in association with these drugs, especially if administered with BPs and denosumab. When the drugs are administered alone, ONJ is rarely seen. The objective of our study was to analyze the recent literature relative to the association of ONJ with these new drugs highlighting the pathogenic, clinical and therapeutic aspects. The close collaboration between maxillofacial surgeon, oncologist, dentist, and dental hygienist remains the most important aspect for the prevention, prompt recognition, and treatment of this pathology.
