Background/Aims Several studies have assessed the effect of cool temperature on colonic peristalsis. Transient receptor potential melastatin 8 (TRPM8) is a temperature-sensitive ion channel activated by mild cooling expressed in the colon. We examined the antispasmodic effect of cool temperature on colonic peristalsis in a prospective, randomized, single-blind trial and based on the video imaging and intraluminal pressure of the proximal colon in rats and TRPM8-deficient mice. Methods In the clinical trial, we randomly assigned a total of 94 patients scheduled to undergo colonoscopy to 2 groups: the mildly cool water (n = 47) and control (n = 47) groups. We used 20 mL of 15°C water for the mildly cool water. The primary outcome was the proportion of subjects with improved peristalsis after treatment. In the rodent proximal colon, we evaluated the intraluminal pressure and performed video imaging of the rodent proximal colon with cool water administration into the colonic lumen. Clinical trial registry website (Trial No. UMIN-CTR; UMIN000030725). Results In the randomized controlled trial, after treatment, the proportion of subjects with no peristalsis with cool water was significantly higher than that in the placebo group (44.7% vs 23.4%; P < 0.05). In the rodent colon model, cool temperature water was associated with a significant decrease in colonic peristalsis through its suppression of the ratio of peak frequency (P < 0.05). Cool temperature-treated TRPM8-deficient mice did not show a reduction in colonic peristalsis compared with wild-type mice. Conclusion For the first time, this study demonstrates that cool temperature-dependent suppression of colonic peristalsis may be associated with TRPM8 activation.

Study Design: Retrospective study.Purpose: To compare the radiographic risk factors for decreased cervical lordosis (CL) after laminoplasty, focusing on the difference between cervical spondylotic myelopathy (CSM) and cervical ossification of the posterior longitudinal ligament (C-OPLL).Overview of Literature: A few reports compared the risk factors for decreased CL between CSM and C-OPLL although these two pathologies have their characteristics. Methods: This study included 50 patients with CSM and 39 with C-OPLL who underwent multi-segment laminoplasty. Decreased CL was defined as the difference between preoperative and 2-year postoperative neutral C2–7 Cobb angles. Radiographic parameters included preoperative neutral C2–7 Cobb angles, C2–7 sagittal vertical axis (SVA), T1 slope (T1S), dynamic extension reserve (DER), and range of motion. The radiographic risk factors were investigated for decreased CL in CSM and C-OPLL. Additionally, the Japanese Orthopedic Association (JOA) score was assessed preoperatively and 2 years postoperatively. Results: C2–7 SVA (<i>p</i> =0.018) and DER (<i>p</i> =0.002) were significantly correlated with decreased CL in CSM, while C2–7 Cobb angle (<i>p</i> =0.012) and C2–7 SVA (<i>p</i> =0.028) were correlated with decreased CL in C-OPLL. Multiple linear regression analysis revealed that greater C2–7 SVA (<i>B</i> =0.22, <i>p</i> =0.026) and small DER (<i>B</i> =−0.53, <i>p</i> =0.002) were significantly associated with decreased CL in CSM. By contrast, greater C2–7 SVA (<i>B</i> =0.36, <i>p</i> =0.031) was significantly associated with decreased CL in C-OPLL. The JOA score significantly improved in both CSM and C-OPLL (<i>p</i> <0.001).Conclusions: C2–7 SVA was associated with a postoperative decreased CL in both CSM and C-OPLL, but DER was only associated with decreased CL in CSM. Risk factors for decreased CL slightly differed depending on the etiology of the condition.

A tape formulation of pyriproxyfen was prepared by coating the chemical onto yellow plastic film. We evaluated the transovarial ovicidal activity of the tape formulation against Bemisia tabaci and investigated the optimal application method and efficacy in a greenhouse. The tape formulation showed high ovicidal activity of over 80% mortality against B. tabaci for 4 days by a 30-second compulsory contact test. The formulation controlled the B. tabaci population on tomatoes by both “sideways spreading application” and “vertical hanging application”. “Sideways spreading application” was considered to be more practical, although there was no significant difference in efficacy between the two application methods. In a large-scale greenhouse trial of “sideways spreading application”, the tape formulation suppressed the B. tabaci population for 77 days. The results suggested that the tape formulation is promising as a tool for IPM because of its high efficacy and lower environmental impact.
Internal Flow of a Two-Bladed Helical Inducer at an Extremely Low Flow Rate
Watanabe, Satoshi,Inoue, Naoki,Ishizaka, Koichi,Furukawa, Akinori,Kim, Jun-Ho Korean Society for Fluid machinery 2010 International journal of fluid machinery and syste Vol.3 No.2
The attachment of inducer upstream of main impeller is an effective method to improve the suction performance of turbopump. However, various types of cavitation instabilities are known to occur even at the designed flow rate as well as in the partial flow rate region. The cavitation surge occurring at partial flow rates is known to be strongly associated with the inlet back flow. In the present study, in order to understand the detailed structure of internal flow of inducer, we firstly carried out the experimental and numerical studies of non-cavitating flow, focusing on the flow field near the inlet throat section and inside the blade passage of a two bladed inducer at a partial flow rate. The steady flow simulation with cavitation model was also made to investigate the difference of flow field between in the cavitating and no-cavitating conditions.

The effect of immune activation by Echinacea purpurea was investigated by measuring total immunoglobulin (Ig) G, IgM. and the radioprotective effect of immune activation by Echinacea purpurea was investigated by measuring T lymphocyte subsets in the peripheral blood of mice following whole body irradiation. Echinacea purpurea activated macrophages to stimulate $IFN-{\gamma}$ production in association with the secondary activation of T lymphocytes, resulting in a decrease in IgG and IgM production. Cytokines released from macrophages in mouse peripheral blood after Echinacea purpurea administration activated helper T cells to proliferate. In addition, activated macrophages in association with the secondary T lymphocyte activation increased $IFN-{\gamma}$ production and stimulated proliferation of cytotoxic T cells and suppressor T cells, indicating the activation of cell-mediated immune responses.

We successfully developed zeolite membranes with hydrophilic character, by choosing appropriate zeolites in terms of hydrophilicity and high acid tolerance. We evaluated thus developed membranes by their pervaporation (PV) performance, dehydration from acidic organic solvent. The zeolite membranes we developed, based on merlinoite (MER), chabazite (CHA) or phillipsite (PHI), are shown to exhibit stable dehydration performance, respectively. We successfully applied the membranes to the selective removal of water in an ester condensation reaction starting from a stoichiometric mixture of a carboxylic acid and an alcohol. The availability of pervaporation-assisted ester condensation reaction was validated by various kinds of combinations of carboxylic acid and alcohols, which implies the general availability of pervaporation-assisted process intensification by zeolite membranes.
