A Transferred Negation Interpretation from an Embedded to a Matrix Clause

Sangsoo Park 한국영어학학회 2003 영어학연구 Vol.- No.16

Park, Sangsoo. 2003. A Transferred Negation Interpretation from an Embedded to a Matrix Clause. English Language and Linguistics 16, 271-294. In a negative complex sentence which is headed by the verb denoting the features of internalized epistemic modality and grammaticalized subjunctive mood, notdisplacement is possible if and only if the P-feature Neg in the probe of a matrix and the Neg- feature in the goal of an embedded clause can be matched and identified by the operation Agree. This means that transferred negation interpretation in a negative complex sentence is guaranteed by the verb which has internalized episternic modality and grammaticalized subjunctive mood feature. The P-feature Neg in the probe renders the negative feature in the goal active, which is able to implement the operation Agree and the internal Merge of Neg-operator triggering not-displacement. Therefore, it is reasonable to assume that the derivational process of the internal Merge of Neg-operator in an infinitival complement or a finite complement clause starts from the NegP of the embedded clause via CP and vP successively to the matrix NegP by phase to phase.

Asymmetry of Motor Symptoms and Neuronal Degeneration in Parkinson's Disease: A Brief Scoping Review

        Miso Sophia Park(Miso Sophia Park),Sangsoo Park(Sangsoo Park),Wangjung Hur(Wangjung Hur),Horyong Yoo(Horyong Yoo) J-INSTITUTE 2022 Kinesiology Vol.7 No.2

Purpose: Parkinson’s disease(PD), the fastest-growing neurodegenerative disease, is a movement disorder that manifests unilaterally. Clinical studies, neuroimaging studies, and longitudinal studies all indicate that the clinical features and progression of PD are asymmetric. The asymmetry of PD is thought to be an important clue in understanding the disease's pathophysiology. The purpose of this study is to see how the concept of PD asym-metry evolved over time, to identify the different types of asymmetry that can be seen in PD, and to understand the clinical implications of the different types of asymmetry in PD. Method: The following were our review questions. (1)How has PD asymmetry research evolved over time? (2)What types of asymmetry can be seen in PD? (3)What are the clinical implications of the various types of asymmetry seen in PD? To investigate such questions, we used the keywords "Parkinson" and(“symmetry” or “asymmetry”) in PubMed. Articles about idiopathic Parkinson’s disease(iPD) patients with a clear concept of sym-metry or asymmetry that were peer-reviewed and written in English were included. The type of article, partici-pants, three main keywords, and the type of symmetry concepts in the study were extracted. We excluded studies that did not include patients with idiopathic PD or that did not have a clear concept of symmetry. Results: Based on a PubMed search, the number of published articles on iPD and symmetry gradually in-creased beginning in the 1980s. Of the 563 articles that were initially searched, 333 articles were related to both iPD and symmetry or asymmetry concepts. There were 171 articles on nervous system asymmetry, 133 on motor symptoms and gait asymmetry, 24 on disease presentation asymmetry, and 5 on anatomical or histological struc-tures asymmetry. The majority(n = 70) of the 171 studies on nervous system asymmetry dealt with lateralization of brain function and the resulting asymmetries in motor symptoms and disease manifestations in iPD patients. Conclusion: Asymmetry in iPD patients has mainly been studied based on nervous system asymmetry, motor symptoms, and overall disease presentation. Other types of asymmetry, such as asymmetry in anatomical and histological structures, have been studied in some studies. Asymmetry in iPD is not only an inherent feature of the disease; it also appears to be related to the disease's various symptoms and signs. As a result, more research is needed to better understand the pathophysiology of iPD and to provide iPD patients with a prognosis and advice for disease management.

Integration of Collaborative Analyses for Development of Embedded Control Software

Sangsoo Park,Kang Geun Shin,Shige Wang IEEE 2010 Proceedings of the Institute of Electrical and Ele Vol.98 No.4

<P>Model-based methodologies have been widely used to handle the increasing demand for rapid development of high-quality, real-time embedded control software. A key challenge in such model-based design is integration of various ¿collaborative¿ analysis methods to support the automation of the design process. Traditional analysis methods developed for analyzing specific system properties, however, are not designed for such integration, and thus cannot ensure that the information for the analysis will be provided at the design stage where the information is needed. Moreover, many traditional analysis methods depend heavily on complete and accurate design models which can only be applied to post-design verification and are unavailable for automation of the design process involving an early design stage, where implementation details are unknown. This challenge can be met by integrating analysis methods with the design process. We have developed such a framework combined with software modeling, execution platform configuration, and run-time monitoring mechanisms to enable accurate assessment of embedded software quality at early design stages. We have implemented and demonstrated the framework with a toolkit, called AIRES, that integrates software models, a virtual execution platform, and timing and schedulability analysis methods.</P>

      • Interrupt-less Servo Motor Controls of Pneumatic Pumps

Sangsoo Park 보안공학연구지원센터 2015 International Journal of Software Engineering and Vol.9 No.5

The predictability of system behavior based on interrupts, although commonly used in practice, is difficult to analyze because this behavior may vary depending on the order in which interrupts are detected by the system. Polling, however, consists of periodic tasks and an event polling mechanism. Despite the time delay for obtaining a time stamp of an event in polling, recent advances in microprocessors have led to the development of features that are capable of dealing with such challenges effectively. This paper describes an interrupt-less approach to control the servo motor of a pneumatic pump using a special purpose register to maintain the time stamp of a sensor event. The system can provide enhanced predictability even when all the sensor events are periodically polled. Empirical experiments revealed the proposed approach to be as accurate, when measured in terms of the external output of the system, as the interrupt-driven approach.

기획여행상품의 품질수준에 대한 소비자평가에 관한 연구

박상수 관광경영학회 1998 관광경영연구 Vol.3 No.-

Sangsoo Park This study focused on the consumer marketing alternatives for travel industry in an out-bound tour sector, and provides analysis of consumer awareness about service quality in package tours. So this study selected several important assessment attributes for consumer evaluation criteria of service quality in package tour, and concluded several marketing alternatives and suggested marketing aspects with marketing tools. 1. Traveler rated shopping pleasure at the lowest level in service evaluation of package tour, so marketer should be informed about shopping pleasure before package tour sales and give much informations about shopping pleasure. 2. This study points that the human resources, especially tour conductors and service guides are most important factors in consumer evaluation of service quality in package tours. 3. This study also concludes that the more important factors of package tour service quality are different with travel situations. In case of a group travel, more important factors are speediness. but in an individual travel, more important evaluation factors are accommodation and transportation. 4. In reference to the purpose of travel, this study suggests several marketing points. The honeymoon traveler evaluated that the quality of package tour through the factors of pleasure of travel, but just an ordinary traveler or an incentive traveler considered that human resources and personal services to be more important in a package tour programs.

The Observance of V2 in the English Focalized Constructions

Sangsoo Park 한국영어학학회 2008 영어학연구 Vol.- No.26

The purpose of this paper is to investigate the observance of V2 in the English focalized constructions from a diachronic perspective. It is proposed that -features with a tense feature in C agree with rich verbal inflection and the lexicalization of a finite verb in C results in the obligatory V2 in OE. It is because an edge feature in C triggers the internal Merge of a focalized constituent in Spec-C in root declarative clauses, wh-interrogatives, negative-initial constructions or locative inversion constructions in OE. As -features with a tense feature were inherited by T from C around the fifteenth century, T started denoting an EPP-feature which triggered the internal Merge of a subject in Spec-T. Concurrently -features with a tense feature in T began to agree with an auxiliary verb or a finite verb, which shows readjusted V2 in declarative sentences in PDE. Meanwhile, in wh-interrogatives, negativeinitial constructions or locative inversion constructions, -features with a tense feature agree with poor verbal inflection. In this case apparent V2 is derived by means of feature Agree between a focus feature in C and an auxiliary verb or dummy do. This induces verb movement to C and the internal Merge of a focalized constituent in Spec-C in PDE.

The Development of Complementizer and Relativizer that in the History of English

Sangsoo Park 한국영어학학회 2006 영어학연구 Vol.- No.22

The purpose of this study is to investigate how the complementizer that and the relativizer that developed in the history of English language. The developmental process of the complementizer that shows that the demonstrative þæt was changed into the complementizer þæt through grammaticalization and category reanalysis long before the OE period. The extension of the grammatical function of that from a complementizer to a relativizer proves that the complementizer þat spread into the domain of relativizers from the early ME period. Given the lexical item þæt that changed from a demonstrative to a complementizer, it is true that the complementizer þæt began to perform the grammatical function of a finite tense marker indicating the finiteness of embedded clauses from the Germanic period. This means that the complementizer þæt started encoding finite tense feature with φ-features at the outset. And additionally it began to carry out the grammatical function of a declarative force marker from the ME period. In Present-day English, while finite tense feature should be or can be realized as null form without CP by means of the transmission of it from C to T, declarative force feature is generally realized as overt form in C. The growth of declarative force feature as a grammatical rule was complete by the time C-oriented clausal-head system was changed into T-oriented clausal-head system with the demise of V-2 in late ME. The syntactic differentiation between the complementizer that and the relativizer that is confirmed by the contrastive grammaticality of that-trace construction in complement clauses and in relative clauses. The time that-trace effect and counter that-trace effect came to exert its robust power of a grammatical rule was in gear with the disappearance of overt verb movement and introduction of do as an auxiliary verb.
