Evaluation of Hot Deformation and Dynamic Recrystallization Behaviors of Advanced Reduced-Activated Alloy (ARAA)

        SangWook Kim,Hyeon‑Woo Son,Taek‑Kyun Jung,Young‑Bum Chun,Yi‑Hyun Park,Ji‑Woon Lee,Soong‑Keun Hyun 대한금속·재료학회 2019 METALS AND MATERIALS International Vol.25 No.4

The hot deformation behavior of advanced reduced-activation alloy (ARAA) was investigated using hot torsion tests. Thefl ow stress decreased as deformation temperature increased and as strain rate decreased. The fl ow behavior demonstratedthe typical dynamic recrystallization (DRX). Based on the constitutive analysis of peak stress, the activation energy for hotdeformation was found to be 330.3 kJ mol −1 . Peak stress was analyzed as a function of the Zener–Hollomon parameter, andcalculated and experimental values were in good agreement. A DRX kinetic model for ARAA was derived with deformationconditions based on the Avrami-type model. It was confi rmed that the volume fraction of dynamically recrystallized grainsincreased as deformation temperature increased and as strain rate decreased. The necklace structure and grain boundarybulging were observed in the deformed microstructure of ARAA. The suggested DRX mechanism for ARAA during hotworking is discontinuous DRX.

Vol.9 No.1

The Korean Construction Industry significantly contributed to the Korean economic development not only by preparing the domestic infrastructure but also by successfully conducting various international projects. However, major incidents such as the collapse of Sung-Su Bridge and Sam-Pung Department Store along with stagnation of Korean Economy have raised questions about underlying systematic problems of the Korean Construction Industry. As a solution to resurrect the Korean Construction Industry, the Construction Management (CM) system introduced in late 1990's and increasingly utilized as an innovative delivery system. Despite of the fast growth of CM, the performance of CM has not been up to the hype and low CM fee has been identified as one of the main reasons of unsatisfactory CM performance. Therefore, this research attempted to propose ways of improving 'CM Fee Guidelines' published by Korean Ministry of Construction and Transportation by conducting a benchmarking study on Global Standards of estimating CM Fee. International organizations benchmarked in this research include CMAA, ASCE, DOL, DOE, etc. Various investigation and analysis revealed that Korean 'CM Fee Guidelines' need to significantly modified comparing to Global Standards. This research also tried to prepare recommendations to improve the CM deliver system focusing on the 'Method of CM Fee Estimation' and Selection of a CM firm as an owner's agent.

Interactions between Chicken Salt-soluble Meat Proteins and Makgeolli Lees Fiber in Heat-induced Gels

        Yun Sang Choi,Kwoan Sik Park,Hack Youn Kim,Hyun Wook Kim,Dong Heon Song,Hai Jung Chung,Ju Woon Lee,Cheon Jei Kim 한국축산식품학회 2011 한국축산식품학회지 Vol.31 No.6

The technological effects of Makgeolli lees fiber (0, 0.5, 1.0, 2.0, and 4.0%) on chicken salt-soluble breast meat proteins in a model system on proximate composition, physicochemical properties, and textural properties were investigated. Makgeolli lees fiber was obtained from Makgeolli brew processing, and the by-products showed good dietary fiber. The moisture and ash contents, water holding capacity, redness, yellowness, hardness, and apparent viscosity of chicken salt-soluble meat protein heat-induced gel systems with Makgeolli lees fiber were all higher than the control without Makgeolli lees fiber. However, protein solubility and electrophoretic patterns did not differ among the control and treatments with Makgeolli lees fiber samples. The chicken salt-soluble protein heat-induced gel systems incorporating Makgeolli lees fiber had improved water holding capacity, textural properties, and viscosity due to Makgeolli lees fiber addition. These results suggest that the addition of 4.0% Makgeolli lees fiber to gel is helpful to improve the physical properties of heat-induced gels.

Development of a Sol-gel-assisted Reverse-phase Microarray Platform for Simple and Rapid Detection of Prostate-specific Antigen from Serum

        Sang Wook Lee,Thomas Laurell,정옥찬,김소연 한국바이오칩학회 2018 BioChip Journal Vol.12 No.1

A sol-gel-based reverse-phase microarray was developed with improved sensitivity for prostatespecific antigen (PSA) from serum. The pore-sizecontrolled 3D sol-gel matrix was created with a large surface area to capture target molecules densely. Using the optically active sol-gel nanocomposites, human female serum was spiked with PSA and assessed using the reverse-phase protein microarray. The reverse-phase assay exhibited a limit of detection of 1 pg/mL for PSA and a dynamic range of 103 orders of magnitude. Notably, the platform matched the demand of the immunoassay in a simple and feasible manner. Moreover, the platform shortened the total assay time with an increased accuracy of diagnosis.

      • Phosphorylation of ORC2 Protein Dissociates Origin Recognition Complex from Chromatin and Replication Origins

Lee, Kyung Yong,Bang, Sung Woong,Yoon, Sang Wook,Lee, Seung-Hoon,Yoon, Jong-Bok,Hwang, Deog Su American Society for Biochemistry and Molecular Bi 2012 The Journal of biological chemistry Vol.287 No.15

During the late M to the G1 phase of the cell cycle, the origin recognition complex (ORC) binds to the replication origin, leading to the assembly of the prereplicative complex for subsequent initiation of eukaryotic chromosome replication. We found that the cell cycle-dependent phosphorylation of human ORC2, one of the six subunits of ORC, dissociates ORC2, -3, -4, and -5 (ORC2-5) subunits from chromatin and replication origins. Phosphorylation at Thr-116 and Thr-226 of ORC2 occurs by cyclin-dependent kinase during the S phase and is maintained until the M phase. Phosphorylation of ORC2 at Thr-116 and Thr-226 dissociated the ORC2-5 from chromatin. Consistent with this, the phosphomimetic ORC2 protein exhibited defective binding to replication origins as well as to chromatin, whereas the phosphodefective protein persisted in binding throughout the cell cycle. These results suggest that the phosphorylation of ORC2 dissociates ORC from chromatin and replication origins and inhibits binding of ORC to newly replicated DNA.

      • Comparisons of Surgical Outcomes, Complications, and Costs Between Laparotomy and Laparoscopy in Early-Stage Ovarian Cancer

        Lee, Maria,Kim, Sang Wun,Paek, Jiheum,Lee, San Hui,Yim, Ga Won,Kim, Jae Hoon,Kim, Jae Wook,Kim, Young Tae,Nam, Eun Ji BMJ 2011 International journal of gynecological cancer Vol.21 No.2

        Objectives:
The purpose of this study was to compare the surgical outcomes, complications, and costs between laparoscopic staging and laparotomic staging for early-stage ovarian cancer.
Methods:
We evaluated 113 patients who underwent laparoscopy (n = 26) or laparotomy (n = 87) for staging. We retrospectively analyzed patients' demographics and operative variables, including operative time, estimated blood loss, lymph node count, hospital stay, complications, postoperative pain, and return to normal activity. In addition, costs for laparoscopy and laparotomy groups were also compared.
Results:
The mean operation time was longer in laparoscopy group compared to laparotomy group (227.6 minutes vs 184.6 minutes, P = 0.016). The laparoscopy group had less intraoperative blood loss, less transfusion requirement, shorter postoperative hospital stay, earlier general diet intake, shorter time to adjuvant chemotherapy, and lower postoperative pain score after 6, 24, and 48 hours compared with the laparotomy group. The mean number of lymph node retrievals was comparable between the groups. The incidence of operative complications was lower in the laparoscopy group (7.7%) relative to the laparotomy group (23.0%). The total average cost for staging completed via laparotomy was $1237 and that via laparoscopy was $1998, with significant difference.
Conclusions:
Complete surgical staging by laparoscopy was achieved in all cases with comparable operative time and less operative complications compared with laparotomy for selected patients with early-stage ovarian cancer. However, the operation costs for laparoscopy were significantly higher than the operation costs for laparotomic staging surgery.

      • Detection of Foreign Bodies in Foods Using Continuous Wave Terahertz Imaging

LEE, YOUNG-KI,CHOI, SUNG-WOOK,HAN, SEONG-TAE,WOO, DEOG HYUN,CHUN, HYANG SOOK International Association for Food Protection 2012 Journal of food protection Vol.75 No.1

Foreign bodies (FBs) in food are health hazards and quality issues for many food manufacturers and enforcement authorities. In this study, continuous wave (CW) terahertz (THz) imaging at 0.2 THz with an output power of 10 mW was compared with X-ray imaging as techniques for inspection of food for FBs. High-density FBs, i.e., aluminum and granite pieces of various sizes, were embedded in a powdered instant noodle product and detected using THz and X-ray imaging. All aluminum and granite pieces (regular hexahedrons with an edge length of 1 to 5 mm) were visualized by both CW THz and X-ray imaging. THz imaging also detected maggots (length = 8 to 22 mm) and crickets (length = 35 and 50 mm), which were embedded in samples as low density FBs. However, not all sizes of maggot pieces embedded in powdered instant noodle were detected with X-ray imaging, although larger crickets (length = 50 mm and thickness = 10 mm) were detected. These results suggest that CW THz imaging has potential for detecting both high-density and low-density FBs embedded in food.
