Underwater Navigation of AUVs Using Uncorrelated Measurement Error Model of USBL
Lee, Pan-Mook,Park, Jin-Yeong,Baek, Hyuk,Kim, Sea-Moon,Jun, Bong-Huan,Kim, Ho-Sung,Lee, Phil-Yeob Korean Society of Ocean Engineers 2022 韓國海洋工學會誌 Vol.36 No.5
This article presents a modeling method for the uncorrelated measurement error of the ultra-short baseline (USBL) acoustic positioning system for aiding navigation of underwater vehicles. The Mahalanobis distance (MD) and principal component analysis are applied to decorrelate the errors of USBL measurements, which are correlated in the x- and y-directions and vary according to the relative direction and distance between a reference station and the underwater vehicles. The proposed method can decouple the radial-direction error and angular direction error from each USBL measurement, where the former and latter are independent and dependent, respectively, of the distance between the reference station and the vehicle. With the decorrelation of the USBL errors along the trajectory of the vehicles in every time step, the proposed method can reduce the threshold of the outlier decision level. To demonstrate the effectiveness of the proposed method, simulation studies were performed with motion data obtained from a field experiment involving an autonomous underwater vehicle and USBL signals generated numerically by matching the specifications of a specific USBL with the data of a global positioning system. The simulations indicated that the navigation system is more robust in rejecting outliers of the USBL measurements than conventional ones. In addition, it was shown that the erroneous estimation of the navigation system after a long USBL blackout can converge to the true states using the MD of the USBL measurements. The navigation systems using the uncorrelated error model of the USBL, therefore, can effectively eliminate USBL outliers without loss of uncontaminated signals.
A Design of Equalization Digital On-Channel Repeater for Single Frequency Network ATSC System
Lee, Yong-Tae,Park, Sung Ik,Eum, Ho Min,Seo, Jae Hyun,Kim, Heung Mook,Kim, Seung Won,Seo, Jong Soo IEEE 2007 IEEE transactions on broadcasting Vol.53 No.1
<P>This paper presents a guideline for designing an Equalization Digital On-Channel Repeater (EDOCR) and proposes an efficient method to implement it. The major concerns in the design of an EDOCR are shortening the system delay, maintaining synchronization between a main transmitter and an EDOCR, obtaining high signal to noise ratio (SNR) output, and enabling operation in an environment of adjacent channel interference. The short system delay is achieved adopting a demodulation scheme without an additional lowpass filter to remove harmonics, an intelligent slicer of a trellis decoder with a trace back depth of 1 for equalization, and an equi-ripple filter for the 8-VSB pulse shaping filter. To maintain the synchronization, the frequency offset information extracted from the received signal is reflected on a re-transmitting signal. Distinguished features of the EDOCR are adaptive equalization with the intelligent slicer which corrects symbol errors caused by on-air interface including the signal loopback, and the signal processing scheme which demodulates the received signal to a baseband symbol and re-modulates the symbol. Hence, the EDOCR can produce an exact replica of the main transmitter's signal with high SNR although there may be adjacent channels and input signal is distorted by multipath and noise. Finally, the performance evaluation of the designed EDOCR in both simulation and laboratory tests are presented and implementations of single frequency networks employing EDOCRs are discussed</P>

<P>In this study, we proposed a testis-mediated germline chimera production system based on the transplantation of testicular cells directly into heterologous testes. The testicular cells of juvenile (4-wk-old) or adult (24-wk-old) Korean Ogol chickens with a recessive pigmentation inhibitory gene, with or without prior culture, were injected (2 x 10(7) cells/head) into the seminiferous tubules of juvenile or adult recipients with White Leghorn with a dominant pigmentation inhibitory gene in a 2 x 2 factorial arrangement. The localization of transplanted cells into the inner space of the seminiferous tubules was confirmed within 24 h after injection. Subsequent testcross analyses showed that 7.8% (5/64) of the recipients had chimeric status in their testes. The periods of time from transfer to hatching of the first progeny with black feathers were 38 and 45 days for adult cells transplanted into an adult recipient, 188 days for adult cells into a juvenile recipient, and 137 days for juvenile cells into a juvenile recipient. Culture of the testicular cells derived both colony-forming and monolayer-forming cells. The colony-forming cells were stained positively for periodic acid Schiff solution, and further reacted with anti-SSEA-1, anti-SSEA-3, and anti-SSEA-4 antibodies both before and after culture for 15 days. In conclusion, it may be possible to develop the testis-mediated germline chimera production technique, which extends the feasibility of genetic manipulations in avian species.</P>

In order to improve the quality of life and to prevent chronic complications related to diabetes mellitus, intensive lifestyle modification and proper medication are needed from the early stage of diagnosis of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). When using the first medication for diabetic patients, the appropriate treatment should be selected considering the clinical characteristics of the patient, efficacy of the drug, side effects, and cost. In general, the use of metformin as the first treatment for oral hypoglycemic monotherapy is recommended because of its excellent blood glucose-lowering effect, relatively low side effects, long-term proven safety, low risk of hypoglycemia, and low weight gain. If metformin is difficult to use as a first-line treatment, other appropriate medications should be selected in view of the clinical situation. If the goal of achieving glycemic control is not achieved by monotherapy, a combination therapy with different mechanisms of action should be initiated promptly.

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>In this study, the development of electrically-heatable carbon thin films (CTFs) from water-soluble poly(vinyl alcohol) (PVA) is described. CTFs are easily obtained by room-temperature and solid-state proton irradiation-induced stabilization of PVA thin films followed by carbonization at a high temperature. The results of the chemical, optical, and structural analyses reveal that polyene-network structures, enabling high-temperature dimensional stability, are effectively created in the PVA thin films by combined reactions of crosslinking and dehydration during proton irradiation; these structures are further converted to pseudo-graphitic CTFs by carbonization. The prepared CTFs exhibit the fluence and thickness-dependent electrical conductivity ranging from 0.8 × 102 to 2.63 × 102 S cm−1, and a very low surface roughness of below 0.41 nm. Moreover, the prepared CTFs show excellent electric-heating characteristics and the performance is clearly dependent on the thickness and fluence. The CTFs prepared in this study have good potential for application in the fabrication of automobiles, smart windows, and medical devices for deicing, defrosting, and warming.</P> <P><B>Highlights</B></P> <P> <UL> <LI> Carbon thin films (CTFs) were prepared by proton irradiation and carbonization. </LI> <LI> The CTFs showed a high electrical conductivity and a very low surface roguhness. </LI> <LI> The CTFs exhibited an excellent electric heating performance. </LI> </UL> </P> <P><B>Graphical abstract</B></P> <P>This study describes the preparation of poly(vinyl alcohol)-derived carbon thin films by via simple dry and ambient proton irradiation-induced stabilization and carbonization.</P> <P>[DISPLAY OMISSION]</P>

In this study, we performed RTD measurement at the die exit of co-rotating twin-screw extruder using a non-destructive ultrasonic device. The ultrasonic device was attached at slit die and was composed of a steel buffer rod and 10 MHz longitudinal piezoelectric ultrasonic transducer. This in-line ultrasonic monitoring method is based on the ultrasonic response of $CaCO_3$ filled in polymer. The RTD is evaluated by variation of ultrasonic attenuation with time caused by change of the tracer concentration during extrusion. The ultrasonic tracer, pellet type of compounded $CaCO_3$ in polymer was used in this study. The effects of tracer concentration on RTD and flow patterns were studied. Evaluation for the residence functions at different screw speeds, feeding rates and screw configurations were also carried out.

We investigated thermal, rheological, morphological and mechanical properties of a binary blend of poly(lactic acid) (PLA) and poly(butylene succinate adipate) (PBSA). The blends were extruded and their molded properties were examined. DSC thermograms of blends indicated that the thermal properties of PLA did not change noticeably with the amount of PBSA, but thermogravimetric analysis showed that thermal stability of the blends was lower than that of pure PLA and PBSA. Immiscibility was checked with thermal data. The rheological properties of the blends changed remarkably with composition. The tensile strength and modulus of blends decreased with PBSA content. Interestingly, however, the impact strength of PLA/PBSA (80/20) blend was seriously increased higher than the rule of mixture. Morphology of the blends showed a typical sea and island structure of immiscible blend. The effect of the blend composition on the biodegradation was also investigated. In the early stage of the degradation test, the highest rate was observed for the blend containing $80wt\%$ PBSA.
