A novel micropump with fixed-geometry valves and low leakage flow
Hwang, Il-Han,An, Jae-Yong,Ko, Kwang-Hee,Shin, Sang-Mo,Lee, Jong-Hyun IOP 2007 JOURNAL OF MICROMECHANICS AND MICROENGINEERING - Vol.17 No.8
<P>A novel micropump with fixed-geometry valves was designed and tested with a leakage barrier to reduce leakage flow. Conventional micropumps with fixed-geometry valves have achieved net positive fluid flow from different fluid resistances in diffuser/nozzle channels. However, those micropumps are susceptible to leakage flow even at low pressure differences between the inlet and the outlet because the channels remain normally open state when the pumps are not in operation. Therefore, a leakage barrier in the chamber was designed to reduce leakage flow without interfering with the net positive fluid flow of the diffuser/nozzle channels. The diffuser/nozzle channels, the chamber and the leakage barrier were fabricated on the silicon substrate by KOH etching and the silicon substrate was anodically bonded with a Pyrex glass plate. A PZT disk was bonded on the glass plate by epoxy and was actuated to oscillate the glass diaphragm for flow generation. When the micropump is not operating, the leakage barrier removes most of the gap between the glass plate and the bottom of the chamber. It was experimentally confirmed that the leakage barrier reduced the leakage flow by 96% compared to the case of no leakage barrier at a pressure difference of −400 Pa. Moreover, by applying the holding dc voltage to the PZT disk, a smaller gap can be obtained reducing the leakage flow further down to 0.043 µL min−1 at a holding dc voltage of 100 V. The maximum flow rate was 3.9 µL min−1 at a peak-to-peak driving voltage of 150 V at 20 Hz with a maximum back pressure of around 800 Pa. The approximate device size was 18 × 25 mm2.</P>
Emergence of Kondo Resonance in Graphene Intercalated with Cerium

<P>The interaction between a magnetic impurity, such as cerium (Ce) atom, and surrounding electrons has been one of the core problems in understanding many-body interaction in solid and its relation to magnetism. Kondo effect, the formation of a new resonant ground state with quenched magnetic moment, provides a general framework to describe many-body interaction in the presence of magnetic impurity. In this Letter, a combined study of angle-resolved photoemission (ARPES) and dynamic mean-field theory (DMFT) on Ce-intercalated graphene shows that Ce-induced localized states near Fermi energy, <I>E</I>F, hybridized with the graphene π-band, exhibit gradual increase in spectral weight upon decreasing temperature. The observed temperature dependence follows the expectations from the Kondo picture in the weak coupling limit. Our results provide a novel insight how Kondo physics emerges in the sea of two-dimensional Dirac electrons.</P> [FIG OMISSION]</BR>
Pedunculated mucinous cystic neoplasm of the liver: a case report
Sang-Woo Ha,Shin Hwang,Hyejin Han,Song Ie Han,Seung Mo Hong 영남대학교 의과대학 2022 Yeungnam University Journal of Medicine Vol.39 No.3
In 2010, the World Health Organization classified mucin-producing bile duct tumors of the liver into two distinct entities; mucinous cystic neoplasm of the liver (MCN-L) and intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasm of the bile duct. We present the case of a patient with MCN-L having a uniquely pedunculated shape. A 32‐year‐old woman was referred to our institution with a diagnosis of biliary cystic neoplasm. She had undergone left salpingo-oophorectomy for ovarian cancer 15 years ago. Imaging studies showed an 8 cm-sized well defined, multiloculated cystic lesion suggesting a mucinous cystic neoplasm. The cystic mass was pedunculated at the liver capsule and pathologically diagnosed as MCN-L. The mass was resected with partial hepatectomy. The patient recovered uneventfully. She was discharged 7 days postoperatively. The patient has been doing well for 6 months after the operation. The patient will be followed up annually because of the favorable postresection prognosis of MCN-L.

<P>We demonstrate an enhanced photo-sensitivity (PS) through an increased light-trapping using surface nano-structuring technique by inductively coupled plasma (ICP) etching on multi-walled carbon nanotube (MWCNT) etch masked Si with hexamethyl-disilazane (HMDS) dispersion. In order for a systematic comparison, four samples are prepared, respectively, by conventional photolithography and ICP etching using MWCNT as a etch mask. MWCNT-etched Si with HMDS dispersion shows the highest RMS roughness and the lowest reflectance of the four. Two test device structures are fabricated with active regions of bare-Si as a reference and MWCNT etch masked Si with HMDS dispersion. The increased light-trapping was most significant at mid-UV, somewhat less at visible and less noticeable at infrared. With an ICP-etched Si using CNT HMDS dispersion, PS is very sharply increased. This result can lead to applications in optoelectronics where the enhancement in light-trapping is important.</P>
