Experimental Investigations on the Plastic Damage of Plates due to Lateral Collisions

In this paper the results are reported of sixty-nine lateral collision tests, which were performed to investigate the collision resistance of plates. For the tests a collision testing machine of spring-roller conveyer type was designed and fabricated. Using this machine, various plates were tested with different masses and velocities and various headers of the striker. A simple analytical method has also been developed to predict the extent of damage of struck plates due to lateral collision. In the method, it is assumed that the kinetic energy of the striker can be dissipated by the formation of yield lines and membrane tensions in the impacted plate. The calculated predictions of extent of damage using the developed method have been substantiated with the test results, which shows reasonably acceptable correlations.

<P>We report on the improvement of light output power of InGaN/GaN blue light-emitting diodes (LEDs) by lateral epitaxial overgrowth (LEO) of GaN using a pyramidal-shaped SiO(2) mask. The light output power was increased by 80% at 20 mA of injection current compared with that of conventional LEDs without LEO structures. This improvement is attributed to an increased internal quantum efficiency by a significant reduction in threading dislocation and by an enhancement of light extraction efficiency by pyramidal-shaped SiO(2) LEO mask.</P>

Effect of Fe Doping on Ferroelectric and Ferromagnetic Properties of Sr0.5Ba0.5Nb2-xFexO6 Ceramics

Tungsten bronze structured Sr0.5Ba0.5Nb2.xFexO6 (SBNF) ceramics are prepared by a solidstate reaction method, and their dielectric constant and ferroelectric and ferromagnetic hysteresis loops are measured in the composition range from x = 0 to x = 0.2. The presence of single phases of SBNF ceramics is confirmed by X-ray diffraction. The phase transition temperature of SBNF ceramics shifts toward low temperature with an increase in Fe concentration. Particularly, the SBNF ceramics with low Fe doping exhibit a ferroelectric P-E and a ferromagnetic M-H hysteresis loops. The effect of Fe doping on the dielectric, ferroelectric, and ferromagnetic properties of Sr0.5Ba0.5Nb2.xFexO6 ceramics is investigated.l
