Physiological and subjective burden when wearing fire protective boots between 3.2 and 5.3 kg

This study investigated the effects of weight increase of firefighters’ boots on physiological and psychological strain. Seven young males (70.9 ± 4.8 kg in body mass, BM) participated in the following four boot conditions while wearing standard firefighting personal protective equipment: 3.2, 3.9, 4.6, and 5.3 kg (4.5, 5.5, 6.5, and 7.5%BM). The results showed that the four boot conditions resulted in no differences in rectal temperature, mean skin temperature, energy expenditure and overall thermal comfort during walking, while increments in heart rate were greater for 5.3 kg than for other three conditions (P < 0.05). Subjects felt less warm and had less uncomfortable feet during exercise for the 3.2 kg condition compared to the three other heavier conditions (P < 0.05). These results indicate that psychological strain due to the load carried on the feet appeared earlier (between 4.5 to 5.5%BM) than physiological strain in terms of heart rate (between 6.5 to 7.5%BM). We finally suggest a 5% body mass upper limit for boot weight because subjective strain of the feet may be a valuable preliminary alarm for the physiological strain of firefighters wearing heavy boots.

The antigenic potential of CFA-001, cefazolin, a cephalosporin derivative produced by an enzymatic semisynthesis, was determined in Hartley guinea pigs. A battery of tests employed consisted of active systemic anaphylaxis (ASA), passive cutaneous anaphylaxis (PCA), and indirect hemagglutination test (IHA). The results were as follows: 1) In ASA, no signs attributable to anaphylaxis was observed in guinea pigs sensitized with CFA-001, whereas OVA-sensitized animals induced severe anaphylactic symptoms; 2) guinea pigs did not produce antibodies against CFA-001 when sensitized with or without Freund's complete adjuvant (FCA) in homologous PCA tests. Meanwhile, antibodies against ovalbumin (OVA) were clearly detected; 3) No CFA-001-specific hemagglutination was observed in the IHA using sera obtained from CFA-001-sensitized guinea pigs. These results suggest that CFA-001 has no antigenicity potential in guinea pigs.

The aim of this study was to assess the feasibility of 18-Fluoro-2-deoxy-D-glucose positron emission tomography/computed metastases (18-FDG PET/CT) , and MRI at detecting pelvic nodes involvement in patients with stage IA-IIB cervical cancer before radical hysterectomy and pelvic lymphadenectomy We were retrospectively evaluated 101 patients with FIGO stage IA2-IIB underwent preoperative PET-CT and MRI and underwent RH and PLND either by Laparoscopy or Laparotomy between December 1, 2007 and June31, 2013. On the basis of pathological results, sensitivity, specificity, and positive and negative predictive value of PET/CT and MRI were assessed for pelvic lymph node involvement. 30/101 patients (29%) had pathologically present pelvic metastases. sensitivity, specificity, Positive predictive values and negative predictive values and accuracy were 43.3%, 93%, 72.2%, 79.5% and 78.2% with MRI, 46.7%, 84.5%, 58.3%, 77.9% and 73.3% with FDG-PET. 18-FDG PET/CT is less accurate than MRI for assessing PLN lymph node involvement in preoperative staging of invasive cervical cancer.

Background: Laparoscopic liver resection has gained much popularity in recent years, but relatively few centers have performed laparoscopic hepatectomies in hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC) patients due to the technical difficulties. We now present our early experience with laparoscopic liver resection in HCC performed in a single institution. Methods: From January 2008 until February 2011, total 761 patients of hepatectomy was done and we excluded TNM stage 3, tumors over 5cm and location of tumors of segment I, VII, VIII. 84 laparoscopic liver resections were performed and open conversion was 13 cases (15.4%). To reduce selection bias we made a propensity case matching and selected 50 pairs of each operation group. Results: The cause of open conversion were bleeding for 7 cases, inability to find a mass for 3 cases, severe adhesion for 2 cases and tumor margin for 1 case. Preoperative variables of each group were comparable. The length of hospital stay was shorter in laparoscopic resection group than open resection group. (9.5 days vs 13.2 days, p=0.018) Disease free survival was not different with each group and overall survival was also comparable. 3 year disease free survival in laparoscopic resection group was 35.3% and open resection group was 51.6%. (p=0.409) 3 year survival rate in laparoscopic resection group was 81.3% and open resection group was 90.2%. (p=0.590) Conclusions: Laparoscopic liver resection for HCC can be a feasible and safe operative method in early stage HCC. To draw a final conclusion, randomized control study and long term follow up is needed.

The electrochemical corrosion behaviors of SA106 Grade B (SA106B) carbon steel in H<sub>2</sub>SO<sub>4</sub>4-N<sub>2</sub>H<sub>4</sub> and H<sub>2</sub>SO<sub>4</sub>-N<sub>2</sub>H<sub>4</sub>-CuSO<sub>4</sub> solutions at 95 ℃ have been investigated with the addition of commercial corrosion inhibitors (CI#30 and No. 570S), to determine the stability of SA106B in the hydrazine-based reductive metal ion decontamination (HyBRID) process. The potentiodynamic polarization experiment revealed that the corrosion inhibitors were capable of lowering the corrosion rate of SA106B in H<sub>2</sub>SO<sub>4</sub>-N<sub>2</sub>H<sub>4</sub> solution. It was found that the corrosion inhibitors induced formation of fixed surface layer on the carbon steel upon the corrosion. This corrosion inhibition performance was reduced in the presence of CuSO<sub>4</sub> in the solution owing to the chemical reactions between organic compounds in the corrosion inhibitors and CuSO<sub>4</sub>. CI#30 showed a better corrosion inhibition effect in the H<sub>2</sub>SO<sub>4</sub>-N<sub>2</sub>H<sub>4</sub>-CuSO<sub>4</sub> solution. Although the corrosion inhibitors can provide better stability to SA106B in the HyBRID solution, their application should be carefully considered because it may result in reduced decontamination performance and increased secondary waste generation.

A new current-balancing multi-channel LED driver is proposed in this paper. The conventional LED driver system consists of three cascaded power conversion stages and its driver stage has the same number of expensive boost converters as those of the LED channels. On the other hand, the proposed LED driver system consists of two cascaded power stages and its driver stage requires only passive devices instead of expensive boost converters. Nevertheless, all of the currents through multi-channel LEDs can be well balanced. Therefore, it features a smaller system size, improved efficiency, and lower cost. To confirm the validity of the proposed driver, its operation and performance are verified on a prototype for a 46” LCD TV.

We investigated the distribution of three anuran species, Three-striped pond frogs (Rana nigromaculata), Bullfrogs (Rana catesbeiana), and Narrow-mouthed toads (Kaloula borealis), in an administrative district, Haenam Gun, Junnam Province, Korea using volunteer call surveys. Twenty-eight volunteer call surveyors were assigned to each $2{\times}2km^2$ survey plot. Call surveys on whether the species are present or not were conducted for 5 minutes between 30 minutes after sunset and the midnight on rice fields and ponds from 10 April to 28 August in 2005. Depending on species, call surveys were carried out at seven to 28 plots with average 8.4 to 10.7 visits per the plot. We calculated the detection probabilities and occupancy rates of the three species using four models with three covariates: temperature, humidity, and the amount of water at the habitat. The model average detection probabilities of three anuran species of R. nigromaculata, R. catesbeiana, and K. borealis were 0.53, 0.74, and 0.41 respectively, and the site occupancy rates of them were 0.93, 0.94, and 0.86 respectively. Our results indicate that R. nigromaculata, R. catesbeiana, and K. borealis are common in Haenam Gun.
