Changes in Morphological and Growing Traits, and Active Substances of Artificial Autotetraploids in Dragonhead (Dracocephalum moldavica L.)

        Saba Yavari,Mohammad Esmaeil Hassani,Reza Omidbaigi,Sara Yavari,Mohammad Jamal Saharkhiz 한국원예학회 2009 Horticulture, Environment, and Biotechnology Vol.50 No.4

Artificial autotetraploids of dragonhead (Dracocephalum moldavica L.) were introduced by treating young plants with aqueous solutions of colchicine at two stages, consisting of the emergence of cotyledon leaves and of two true leaves. Six colchicine concentrations of 0, 0.05, 0.1, 0.2, 0.5, and 0.75% were treated in each of these stages. Results showed that application of colchicine at two true leaves stage had desirable results as many treated plants grew and also diversity was observed in characteristics of treated plants. Tetraploid plants were identified by primary morphological selection, studding stomata characteristics, numbering of chloroplasts in the stomatal guard cells, and finally using flow cytometric analyses. Comparison of characteristics of tetraploid plants with diploids indicated that the higher level of ploidy in dragonhead caused changes in some morphological and physiological traits and active substances.

      • Semantics Aware Loop Closure Detection in Visual SLAM

Saba Arshad,Gon-Woo Kim 제어로봇시스템학회 2021 제어로봇시스템학회 국제학술대회 논문집 Vol.2021 No.10

Loop closure detection is of vital importance to simultaneous localization and mapping for robot motion in an unknown environment. This research reviews the deep learning approaches using semantic information for loop closure detection. In view of shortcomings of the existing research, an improved loop closure detection method is proposed in this research fusing semantic information with a feature-based Bag-of-Words model. RefineNet is used for high-resolution semantic segmentation and dense semantic feature extraction. Semantics being invariant to viewpoint changes and dynamic environment can improve the overall performance of the environment.

Numerical Modeling of the Dynamic Behaviour of Tunnel Lining in Shield Tunneling

Saba Gharehdash,Milad Barzegar 대한토목학회 2015 KSCE JOURNAL OF CIVIL ENGINEERING Vol.19 No.6

This paper studies the impact of metro train operation on the shield tunnel lining and its soft foundation. A complex elasto-plastic 3D dynamic finite difference model is used by fully considering the joints to show the dynamic response of the shield tunnel buried in soft soil under the vibrating load. The simulation result for joint was compared with the result when the joint was not considered. Through the formulation of computationally efficient numerical models, this paper examines the dynamic behaviour of these two particular types of lining structure. The differential Eq.s governing the vibration of a curved beam is discretized by the FLAC3D code. Numerical results demonstrate that an operating metro train induces significant dynamic response in the structure of the lining of the shield tunnel and its soft foundation. Of two horizontally symmetric the one near the joint is more severe in its dynamic response than that of the one far from the joint; the nearer the zone of the foundation soil to the lower half of the segment-ring, the more severe the dynamic response. The dynamic response influenced by joints is more severe than the response not influenced by joints, showing that the non-joint assumption is somewhat impractical.

Vaccine hesitancy: acceptance of COVID-19 vaccine in Pakistan

Saba Masoud 대한백신학회 2023 Clinical and Experimental Vaccine Research Vol.12 No.3

Purpose: The delay in acceptance or refusal to get vaccinated despite the availability of services is called vaccine hesitancy. The Global Polio Eradication Initiative in Pakistan faced consistent barriers preventing the eradication of the disease in the country. Similarly with the advent of the coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) pandemic mass vaccination drives were initiated to a vaccine hesitant population. The aim of this study is to explore the prevalence and reasons for COVID-19 vaccine hesitancy in the Pakistani population. Materials and Methods: Cross-sectional study conducted during July to September 2021 using a snowball sampling technique targeting the adult population of Pakistan. The modified version of the vaccine hesitancy questionnaire related to the Strategic Advisory Group of Experts on Immunization Vaccine Hesitancy matrix was distributed online. Results: Out of 973 participants, 52.4% were immediately willing to take the vaccine and constituted the acceptance group whereas the remaining 47.6% who were still not sure formed the hesitant group. Support from leaders was found to be statistically significant for the difference between the hesitant and acceptance groups (p-value=0.027). Hesitant people were concerned about the effectiveness of the vaccine (60.9%) and potential side effects (57.9%) as it was not sufficiently tested prior to launch (44.7%). Age and education were significant factors affecting the acceptance of vaccination. The most trusted source of information regarding vaccination was health care workers (43.8%). Conclusion: A moderately high prevalence of vaccine hesitancy was reported in Pakistan. To overcome it, policymakers need to address the reasons for it. Leaders, celebrities, and healthcare workers can play an instrumental role in dispelling conspiracy theories regarding vaccines and making the vaccination drive a success.

A novel herbal formulation consisting of red ginseng extract and Epimedium koreanum Nakai-attenuated dextran sulfate sodium-induced colitis in mice

        Saba, Evelyn,Lee, Yuan Yee,Kim, Minki,Hyun, Sun-Hee,Park, Chae-Kyu,Son, Eunjung,Kim, Dong-Seon,Kim, Sung-Dae,Rhee, Man Hee The Korean Society of Ginseng 2020 Journal of Ginseng Research Vol.44 No.6

Background: Ulcerative colitis (UC) is a commonly encountered large intestine disease in the contemporary world that terminates into colorectal cancer; therefore, the timely treatment of UC is of major concern. Panax ginseng Meyer is an extensively consumed herbal commodity in South East Asian countries, especially Korea. It exhibits a wide range of biologically beneficial qualities for almost head-to-toe ailments in the body. Epimedium koreanum Nakai (EKN) is also a widely used traditional Korean herbal medicine used for treating infertility, rheumatism, and cardiovascular diseases. Materials and methods: Separately the anti-inflammatory activities of both red ginseng extracts (RGEs) and EKNs had been demonstrated in the past in various inflammatory models; however, we sought to unravel the anti-inflammatory activities of the combination of these two extracts in dextran sulfate sodium (DSS)-induced ulcerative colitis in mice model because the allopathic remedies for UC involve more side effects than benefits. Results: Our results have shown that the combination of RGE + EKN synergistically alleviated the macroscopic lesions in DSS-induced colitic mice such as colon shortening, hematochezia, and weight loss. Moreover, it restored the histopathological lesions in mice and decreased the levels of proinflammatory mediators and cytokines through the repression of nuclear factor kappa-light-chain-enhancer of activated B cells (NF-κB) and nucleotide-binding domain (NOD)-like receptor protein 3 (NLRP-3) expression. In vitro, this combination also reduced the magnitude of nitric acid (NO), proinflammatory mediators and cytokine through NF-κB and mitogen-activated protein kinase (MAPK) pathways in RAW 264.7 mouse macrophage cells. Conclusion: In the light of these findings, we can endorse this combination extract as a functional food for the prophylactic as well as therapeutic treatment of UC in humans together with allopathic remedies.

Microwave-assisted Synthesis and Molecular Docking Study of Heteroaromatic Chalcone Derivatives as Potential Antibacterial Agents

Saba Farooq,Zainab Ngaini,Nur Arif Mortadza 대한화학회 2020 Bulletin of the Korean Chemical Society Vol.41 No.9

In this study, a series of chalcone derivatives (1a?c) were synthesized via Claisen-Schmidt condensation, followed by aza-Michael addition to form pyrazoline derivatives (2a?c and 3a?c). The reaction was performed via microwave radiation to give excellent yields (77?93%) in 1?3.5 min. Microwave-assisted reaction of Fischer esterification of pyrazolines (2a?c and 3a?c) afforded heteroaromatic pyrazoline esters (4a?c) in high yield (83?96% in <2 min) compared to conventional reflux (55?79% in 30?min). Compounds 1a?c and 3a?c demonstrated excellent antibacterial activity against Staphylococcus aureus via disc diffusion assay with inhibition zone with 13 and 19?mm compared to a standard drug, ampicillin (11?mm). Structure activity relationship of 1b and 3b were visualized via molecular docking interaction against 4pql protein of S. aureus with binding free energy ?7.0 and ?8.0 kcal/mol, respectively. This study is significant in drug discovery process particularly for pharmaceutical industries.

Effects of Physical Environmental Design Attributes on Psychological Well-being of College Students in University Dormitory During the Covid-19 Pandemic Period

        Saba Sadeghpour Faraj,김원필 대한건축학회 2022 Architectural research Vol.24 No.4

During pandemic period, college students lost lots of such academic opportunities as extra-curriculum socialactivities, contact classes, and friendly socializing in university campus area, etc. Previous many studies have shownthat physical environment has certain relevance on the well-being of human-beings. Recent public statistics on mentalhealth had shown an increase in psychological distress and a decrease in college students and people's well‐being duringthe lockdown in response to the Covid-19 pandemic. However, there were little evidence on what the college studentsin dormitory suffered from COVID-19 incident in relation with their physical environment. The purpose of this studyis to investigate the relationship between environmental factors and psychological well-being of dormitory students inuniversity campus. In order to explore the impact of physical environment on students’ psychological well-being, surveyinstrumentation consisted of 25 indices were employed to measure the level of awareness to each index. A Chi-squareanalysis on individual characteristics of 200 students found that number of students living in single dwelling unit wasstatistically significant to maintain their psychological well-being, except for number of students living in each dwellingunit (χ2 =128.92, p= .004). Pearson correlation analysis also found that there exists statistically significant relationshipbetween psychological well-being of students and environmental factors. Further, stepwise multiple regression analysisrevealed that the most prime predictor for psychological well-being of students residing in dorm was “use of furniture”(β= .281), implying careful design, lay-out and easy-access to interior furniture by facility planner. The study alsodemonstrated that as the level of positive perception of physical environmental features rose, overall psychological wellbeingof students also responded positively at specified rate. Finally, the findings reinforce a solid evidence that carefullywell-coordinated physical environments play an important role in maintaining emotional stability of college students indorm even in pandemic period.
