EFFECT OF REAR SLANT ANGLE ON VEHICLE CROSSWIND STABILITY SIMULATION ON A SIMPLIFIED CAR MODEL

        S. MANSOR,M. A. PASSMORE 한국자동차공학회 2013 International journal of automotive technology Vol.14 No.5

It is important to know the effect of the aerodynamic forces and moments on driving stability because it isresponsible for the excitation and influences the response of the vehicle. The purpose of this paper is to study the effect of rearslant angle of a surface vehicle on crosswind sensitivity for stability analysis. The vehicle mathematical model used to conducta dynamic simulation was based on a simple reduced order lateral dynamics of sideslip and yaw rate motion coupled withaerodynamics model. The intention here is to compare the effect of rear slant angles response to crosswind and to rank thecrosswind sensitivity ratings. The aerodynamic loads are defined as the function of the aerodynamic derivatives from the staticwind tunnel tests. Result shows a 20o rear slant angle demonstrates the highest rating of crosswind sensitivity, while zerodegree slant exhibits the least.

Materials Selection of Thermoplastic Matrices for ‘Green’ Natural Fibre Composites for Automotive Anti-Roll Bar with Particular Emphasis on the Environment

        Mastura M. T.,Sapuan S. M.,Mansor M. R.,Nuraini A. A. 한국정밀공학회 2018 International Journal of Precision Engineering and Vol.5 No.1

In this study, selection of thermoplastic polymers to be used in natural fibre-reinforced polymer composite is performed using Quality Function Deployment for Environment technique. The candidate materials for the matrix in composites are thermoplastic polyurethane, high-density polyethylene, low-density polyethylene, polystyrene and polypropylene and the selection process is carried out based on the design requirements of an automotive anti-roll bar. Requirements are collected through a study on the voice of customers and the voice of the environment. The approach is followed by sensitivity analysis using Expert Choice software based on the Analytic Hierarchy Process method. From the analysis, high-density polyethylene scored the highest (28.76%), and followed by thermoplastic polyurethane, which had 22.30%of the overall score. Finally, Young’s modulus of hemp fibre reinforced high-density polyethylene and thermoplastic polyurethane composites were compared, predicted using the Halpin-Tsai method. The results show that hemp-reinforced thermoplastic polyurethane composite shows higher Young’s modulus of 10.6 GPa, compared with hemp-reinforced high-density polyethylene composite (8.27 GPa). Based on these two analyses, thermoplastic polyurethane is selected as the most suitable polymer matrix for natural fibre composites for automotive anti-roll bar.

Effect of Alkaline Treatment on Mechanical, Physical and Thermal Properties of Roselle/Sugar Palm Fiber Reinforced Thermoplastic Polyurethane Hybrid Composites

        A. M. Radzi,S. M. Sapuan,M. Jawaid,M. R. Mansor 한국섬유공학회 2019 Fibers and polymers Vol.20 No.4

The aim for this work is to investigate the effect of alkaline treatment on the mechanical, physical and thermalproperties of roselle (RF)/sugar palm fiber (SPF) reinforced thermoplastic polyurethane hybrid composites. RF/SPF hybridcomposites were fabricated at different NaOH concentrations (3 %, 6 % and 9 %) by melt mixing and compression molding. The mechanical, physical and thermal properties of RF/SPF hybrid composites were measured. The morphological propertiesof the tensile fractured sample were examined using scanning electron microscope. Obtained results indicated that the effectof NaOH treatment on the surface improved mechanical, physical and thermal properties accompanied by lower impactresistance. The highest tensile is 14.26 MPa, flexural strength is 14.05 MPa and impact strength is 23.76 kJ/M2) was obtainedfrom treatment 6 % NaOH concentration on RF/SPF hybrid composites. Adhesion bonding between fiber and matrix wasevident by using Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) micrograph of hybrid composite tensile fractured. Scanning electronmicrograph of tensile fractured surfaces of the NaOH treated RF/SPF hybrid composites revealed good adhesion bondingbetween fiber and matrix. Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy analysis was used to observe the effectiveness of NaOHtreatment in the removal impurities on fiber surfaces. Thermogravimetric analysis showed that the treated RF/SPF hybridcomposites had improved the thermal stability. Physical properties showed lower water uptake of the treated thermoplasticpolyurethane hybrid composites. The lowest water uptake is 7.97 % and thickness swelling is 6.49 % obtained from 9 %NaOH concentration after soaked in water for 7 days. Overall, the surface treatment on RF/SPF hybrid composite hasenhanced the composite properties and suitable for automotive part application; battery holder and bottom based.

Discrepancies of fatigue crack growth behaviour of API X65 steel

        N. I. I. Mansor,S. ABDULLAH,A. K. ARIFFIN 대한기계학회 2017 JOURNAL OF MECHANICAL SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY Vol.31 No.10

This paper discusses the fatigue life behaviour of the API X65 steel tested under constant amplitude loading in ambient temperature. The influence of repeated loading at a particular stress ratio would favour the initiation of fatigue cracks that would consequently affect the fatigue crack growth. The main objective of this paper is to evaluate the load ratio effects on fatigue crack growth rate, taking into account their statistical characteristics. The fatigue crack growth test was carried out using compact-tension specimen at different load ratios of 0.1, 0.4 and 0.7. The experimental results showed the crack growth rate was dependent on the applied load. It was observed that the load ratio effect was less significant in stable crack growth regions. The result was consistent with the multiple regression test obtained by the least square method at a significance level of 0.05. The empirical model of Paris and Walker was utilised to evaluate the effects of load ratio on the fatigue crack growth rates. The approximation of fatigue life lies between 10-25 % of error using conservative model and 6 % error using the Walker model. The experimental data was scattered within a factor-of-2 correlation line suggesting that the accuracy of the experimental data towards the estimated values was high.
