The anti–herpes simplex virus type 1 and anti–herpes simplex virus type 2 effects of apple pomace, a byproduct from the cider-processing industry, were investigated. The mechanisms of antiviral action were assessed using a battery of experiments targeting sequential steps in the viral replication cycle. The anti-herpetic mechanisms of apple pomaces included the inhibition of virus attachment to the cell surface and the arrest of virus entry and uncoating. Quercitrin and procyanidin B2 were found to play a crucial role in the antiviral activity.

The sulfatase family involves a group of enzymes with a large degree of similarity. Until now, sixteen human sulfatases have been identified, most of them found in lysosomes. Human deficiency of sulfatases generates various genetic disorders characterized by abnormal accumulation of sulfated intermediate compounds. Mucopolysaccharidosis type II is characterized by the deficiency of iduronate 2-sulfate sulfatase (IDS), causing the lysosomal accumulation of heparan and dermatan sulfates. Currently, there are several cases of genetic diseases treated with enzyme replacement therapy, which have generated a great interest in the development of systems for recombinant protein expression. In this work we expressed the human recombinant IDS-Like enzyme (hrIDS-Like) in Escherichia coli DH5α. The enzyme concentration revealed by ELISA varied from 78.13 to 94.35 ng/ml and the specific activity varied from 34.20 to 25.97 nmol/h/mg. Western blotting done after affinity chromatography purification showed a single band of approximately 40 kDa, which was recognized by an IgY polyclonal antibody that was developed against the specific peptide of the native protein. Our 100 ml-shake-flask assays allowed us to improve the enzyme activity seven fold, compared to the E. coli JM109/pUC13-hrIDS-Like system. Additionally, the results obtained in the present study were equal to those obtained with the Pichia pastoris GS1115/pPIC-9-hrIDS-Like system (3 L bioreactor scale). The system used in this work (E. coli DH5α/pGEX-3X-hrIDS-Like)emerges as a strategy for improving protein expression and purification, aimed at recombinant protein chemical characterization, future laboratory assays for enzyme replacement therapy, and as new evidence of active putative sulfatase production in E. coli.

The increasing demand for non-sinusoidal currents affects the quality of distribution networks. Harmonic detection is a crucial step in the cancellation of those components by active power filters. In this paper, the discrete cosine transform (DCT) is compared with different implementations based on Fourier transforms, demonstrating their equivalences and the advantages provided by the former. We demonstrate that the phase error in the presence of grid frequency deviations and the transient length are reduced by half in comparison to the discrete Fourier transform. A novel algorithm is developed to provide frequency adaptation to the DCT, taking advantage of its good features. The window width is adjusted in real time according to the actual value of the grid fundamental frequency by means of a phase-locked loop. A technique based on dithering is employed to overcome the limitation caused by the truncation of the window number of samples, so the frequency resolution is enhanced. The theoretical approach is verified by simulated and experimental results.

<P><B>Abstract</B></P><P>We present the result of a search for a massive color-octet vector particle, (e.g. a massive gluon) decaying to a pair of top quarks in proton–antiproton collisions with a center-of-mass energy of 1.96 TeV. This search is based on 1.9 fb−1 of data collected using the CDF detector during Run II of the Tevatron at Fermilab. We study tt¯ events in the lepton+jets channel with at least one <I>b</I>-tagged jet. A massive gluon is characterized by its mass, decay width, and the strength of its coupling to quarks. These parameters are determined according to the observed invariant mass distribution of top quark pairs. We set limits on the massive gluon coupling strength for masses between 400 and 800 GeV/c2 and width-to-mass ratios between 0.05 and 0.50. The coupling strength of the hypothetical massive gluon to quarks is consistent with zero within the explored parameter space.</P>

Heliopsis longipes has been recognized as a potential source of insecticidal compounds called alkamides, which can be used to control populations of insect vector transmitters of several diseases that affect the human health. To determine the insecticidal activity of H. longipes against Anopheles albimanus and Aedes aegypti, crude extract of H. longipes roots and affininwere obtained. Catalytic reduction of affininwas performed to obtain two reduced amides, N-isobutil-2E-decenamide and N-isobutil-decanamide. Crude extract, affinin and its reduced amides were evaluated against third instar larvae of An. albimanus and Ae. aegypti. Results show that crude extract of H. longipes possess larvicidal activity against larval stage of An. albimanus and Ae. aegypti. This effect could be attributed to affinin, on which the conjugated double bonds present in the structure of the molecule are necessary to maintain larvicidal activity. This study demonstrated the potential of H. longipes to control larval stage of An. albimanus and Ae. aegypti, transmitter vectors of malaria and dengue fever, respectively.

<P>In CDF we have observed the reactions p + p[over] --> p + X + p[over], with X being a centrally produced J/psi, psi(2S), or chi_{c0}, and gammagamma-->micro;{+}micro;{-} in pp[over] collisions at sqrt[s] = 1.96 TeV. The event signature requires two oppositely charged central muons, and either no other particles or one additional photon detected. Exclusive vector meson production is as expected for elastic photoproduction, gamma + p --> J/psi(psi(2S)) + p, observed here for the first time in hadron-hadron collisions. We also observe exclusive chi_{c0} --> J/psi + gamma. The cross sections dsigma/dy|_{y = 0} for J/psi, psi(2S), and chi_{c0} are 3.92 +/- 0.25(stat) +/- 0.52(syst) nb, 0.53 +/- 0.09(stat) +/- 0.10(syst) nb, and 76 +/- 10(stat) +/- 10(syst) nb, respectively, and the continuum is consistent with QED. We put an upper limit on the cross section for Odderon exchange in exclusive J/psi production.</P>

<P><B>Abstract</B></P><P>A measurement of the top quark mass (Mtop) in the all-hadronic decay channel is presented. It uses 5.8 fb−1 of pp¯ data collected with the CDF II detector at the Fermilab Tevatron Collider. Events with six to eight jets are selected by a neural network algorithm and by the requirement that at least one of the jets is tagged as a <I>b</I>-quark jet. The measurement is performed with a likelihood fit technique, which simultaneously determines Mtop and the jet energy scale (JES) calibration. The fit yields a value of Mtop=172.5±1.4(stat)±1.0(JES)±1.1(syst) GeV/c2.</P>

<P>A precision measurement of the top quark mass m_{t} is obtained using a sample of tt[over ¯] events from pp[over ¯] collisions at the Fermilab Tevatron with the CDF II detector. Selected events require an electron or muon, large missing transverse energy, and exactly four high-energy jets, at least one of which is tagged as coming from a b quark. A likelihood is calculated using a matrix element method with quasi-Monte Carlo integration taking into account finite detector resolution and jet mass effects. The event likelihood is a function of m_{t} and a parameter ?_{JES} used to calibrate the jet energy scale in situ. Using a total of 1087 events in 5.6??fb^{-1} of integrated luminosity, a value of m_{t}=173.0±1.2??GeV/c^{2} is measured.</P>
