A Rule-Based Algorithm for Detection of Ribcage Boundary in Chest Radio-graphs

Detection of the ribcage boundary in chest radio-graphs is important for image registration in temporal subtraction and contralateral subtraction which are CAD schemes to detect lung nodules in chest radio-graphs. In this paper we propose a rule-based algorithm for detection of the ribcage boundary in chest radio-graphs. We made experiments using all 247 images of JSRT database which is a public database. As the result, the proposed algorithm could detect the complete ribcage boundary including the top lung part in good accuracy for 97.6% images and in fair accuracy for 1.6% images.
