Service Levels of Sidewalks for Pedestrians under Mixed Traffic Environment Using Genetic Programming Clustering

        Rima Sahani,Abhishek Ojha,P. K. Bhuyan 대한토목학회 2017 KSCE JOURNAL OF CIVIL ENGINEERING Vol.21 No.7

This study aims at developing a model for pedestrian to evaluate service measure at the roadside walking environment from the qualitative and quantitative analysis in developing countries. The potential primary factors influencing service measure of pedestrian were summarized taking consideration to heterogeneous traffic flow condition and perception of road users. Total 735 real-time sense of participant's satisfaction when they are using the sidewalks, road geometric as well as operational characteristics of the road segments were collected from the 73 sites. The selected sites belong to midsized cities with varying geometric features. Different statistical investigations like factor analysis, Wilks’ lambda test and stepwise regression analysis were carried out to develop PLOS model for sidewalk facilities. From the results it has been observed that the variables taken such as width of sidewalk, vehicle volume, pedestrian volume etc. are significantly influencing the pedestrian service measure and the model was validated with a significance value of R2 = 0.972. The PLOS scores got from the model are then classified using Genetic Programming clustering to find the six PLOS ranges (A-F) which show score for PLOS A ≤1.8 with best condition and PLOS F > 5.1 having worst condition of service.

The field of neuro-oncology is evolving rapidly. Many important advances have recently been reported, and other promising investigations have the potential to soon make substantial impacts in the field, especially in the areas of high-grade gliomas and brain metastases. We present an overview of the current status of this field, highlighting the key recent advances as well as representative work of key clinical investigations, since these concepts have the potential to influence clinical management if they are demonstrated to be safe and efficacious. This overview includes some work that has only appeared in abstract form in order to provide a timely understanding of how the field is actively changing and what may lie on the horizon. We focus on both medical and surgical neuro-oncology advances in this highly multidisciplinary subspecialty.

      • Development of an Image Enhancement Method and a GUI

        Rima Deb,Dipali Sengupta,Rupasree Das,Subhankar Mahajan,Sanjoy Mitra 보안공학연구지원센터 2015 International Journal of Signal Processing, Image Vol.8 No.6

This article introduces a new adaptive local image enhancement method and a graphical user. The algorithm for image enhancement will correct contrast for some certain areas of an image which is based on edges contained in the image and some statistical properties; variance of the whole image and mean value of an image block. A contrast correction gain is chosen for each image tile based on statistical properties. The algorithm improves the visual quality of an image and also restricts noise amplification. The algorithm is tested with grayscale images and results are compared with histogram equalization and adaptive histogram equalization techniques by image quality metrics parameters.

      • Study Protocol for the Most Effective Recall Method in a Cervical Cancer Screening Program in Klang, Malaysia

Rashid, Rima Marhayu Abdul,Dahlui, Maznah Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2013 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.14 No.10

Background: Cervical cancer is the second most common cancer among Malaysian women with an ASR of 17.9 and a mortality rate of 5.6 per 100,000 population in 2008 (GLOBOCAN, 2008). The 5 year prevalence was estimated to be 14.5 per 100,000 population. As the second most common cancer affecting productive females, cervical cancer imposes an impact to the socioeconomic aspect of the country. However, the poor uptake of cervical cancer screening is a major problem in detecting early pre-cancerous lesions and thus, delay in initiating treatment for cervical cancer. Realizing the urgency to increase the uptake of PAP smear, besides enhancing the promotion of PAP smear screening for women above 35 years old, the call-recall system for pap smear screening had been piloted in one of the suburban districts which aimed to improve regular participation of women for cervical and breast cancer screening. This is of public health importance as identifying the best feasible option to increase patient's respond to participate in the screening program effectively in our setting will be helpful in implementing an organized regular population based screening program tailored to our setting. The pilot program of cervical cancer screening in Klang was an opportunity to assess different options in recalling patients for a repeat pap smear to increase their participation and adherence to the program. Methods and Results: This was a population based randomized control trial. Women aged 20-65 years in the population that matched the inclusion and exclusion criteria were re-called for a repeat smear. There are four different intervention groups; letter, registered letters, short messages services (SMS) and phone calls where 250 subjects were recruited into each group. Samples were generated randomly from the same population in Klang into four different groups. The first group received a recall letter for a repeat smear similar to the one that has been given during the first invitation. The intervention groups were either be given a registered letter, an SMS or a phone call to re-call them. The socio-demographic data of the patients who came for uptake were collected for further analysis. All the groups were followed up after 8 weeks to assess their compliance to the recall. Conclusions: The study will provide recommendations about the most effective methods for recall in a population based pap smear screening program on two outcomes: i) patients response; ii) uptake for repeat pap smear.

      • A facile chemical synthesis of a novel photo catalyst: SWCNT/titania nanocomposite

        Paul, Rima,Kumbhakar, Pathik,Mitra, Apurba K. Techno-Press 2013 Advances in nano research Vol.1 No.2

A simple chemical precipitation technique is reported for the synthesis of a hybrid nanostructure of single-wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNT) and titania ($TiO_2$) nanocrystals of average size 5 nm, which may be useful as a prominent photocatalytic material with improved functionality. The synthesized hybrid structure has been characterized by transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM), energy-dispersive X-ray analysis (EDAX), powder X-ray diffractometry (XRD), Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy (FTIR) and Raman spectroscopy. It is clearly revealed that nearly monodispersed titania nanocrystals (anatase phase) of average size 5 nm decorate the surfaces of SWCNT bundles. The UV-vis absorption study shows a blue shift of 16 nm in the absorbance peak position of the composite material compared to the unmodified SWCNTs. The photoluminescence study shows a violet-blue emission in the range of 325-500 nm with a peak emission at 400 nm. The low temperature electrical transport property of the synthesized nanomaterial has been studied between 77-300 K. The DC conductivity shows semiconductor-like characteristics with conductivity increasing sharply with temperature in the range of 175-300 K. Such nanocomposites may find wide applications as improved photocatalyst due to transfer of photo-ejected electrons from $TiO_2$ to SWCNT, thus reducing recombination, with the SWCNT scaffold providing a firm and better positioning of the catalytic material.

      • Is the Phone Call the Most Effective Method for Recall in Cervical Cancer Screening? - Results from a Randomised Control Trial

Rashid, Rima Marhayu Abdul,Mohamed, Majdah,Hamid, Zaleha Abdul,Dahlui, Maznah Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2013 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.14 No.10

Objective: To compare the effectiveness of different methods of recall for repeat Pap smear among women who had normal smears in the previous screening. Design: Prospective randomized controlled study. Setting: All community clinics in Klang under the Ministry of Health Malaysia. Participants: Women of Klang who attended cervical screening and had a normal Pap smear in the previous year, and were due for a repeat smear were recruited and randomly assigned to four different methods of recall for repeat smear. Intervention: The recall methods given to the women to remind them for a repeat smear were either by postal letter, registered letter, short message by phone (SMS) or phone call. Main Outcome Measures: Number and percentage of women who responded to the recall within 8 weeks after they had received the recall, irrespective whether they had Pap test conducted. Also the numbers of women in each recall method that came for repeat Pap smear. Results: The rates of recall messages reaching the women when using letter, registered letter, SMS and phone calls were 79%, 87%, 66% and 68%, respectively. However, the positive responses to recall by letter, registered letter, phone messages and telephone call were 23.9%, 23.0%, 32.9% and 50.9%, respectively (p<0.05). Furthermore, more women who received recall by phone call had been screened (p<0.05) compared to those who received recall by postal letter (OR=2.38, CI=1.56-3.62). Conclusion: Both the usual way of sending letters and registered letters had higher chances of reaching patients compared to using phone either for sending messages or calling. The response to the recall method and uptake of repeat smear, however, were highest via phone call, indicating the importance of direct communication.
