The Ferric uptake regulator (Fur) is a global transcription factor that affects expression of bacterial genes in an iron-dependent fashion. Although the Fur protein and its iron-responsive regulon are well studied, there are still important questions that remain to be answered. For example, the consensus Fur binding site also known as the “Fur box” is under debate, and it is still unclear which Fur residues directly interact with the DNA. Our long-term goal is to dissect the biological roles of Fur in the development of the disease cold-water vibriosis, which is caused by the psychrophilic bacteria Aliivibrio salmonicida (also known as Vibrio salmonicida). Here, we have used experimental and computational methods to characterise the Fur protein from A. salmonicida (AS-Fur). Electrophoretic mobility shift assays show that AS-Fur binds to the recently proposed vibrio Fur box consensus in addition to nine promoter regions that contain Fur boxes. Binding appears to be dependent on the number of Fur boxes, and the predicted “strength” of Fur boxes. Finally, structure modeling and molecular dynamics simulations provide new insights into potential AS-Fur–DNA interactions.
Migration and local dynamics of Trialeurodes vaporariorum in bean crops
Lisbeth Riis,Gösta Nachman 한국응용곤충학회 2008 한국응용곤충학회 학술대회논문집 Vol.2008 No.10
The population dynamics of Trialeurodes vaporariorum (Westwood) in fields grown with French bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) were followed at two different locations in Kenya with the purpose of studying the interplay between local and regional dynamics. The fields were surrounded by two types of window traps which provided data on the relative rates of whiteflies arriving and leaving the fields. These data were supplemented with density estimates of adult whiteflies within the fields obtained by means of pot traps. Whiteflies arrived five days after the crop germinated, causing a quick increase in the proportion of infested plants, which reached 98% of all plants one month after germination, corresponding to ca 6 adult whiteflies per plant. Flight activity had two daily peaks, one around 12 hours and one about 16 hours. Activity level was found to increase with temperature (up to 27.5oC) and solar radiation (up to 0.73 kW/m2) and to decrease with wind speed. Immigration rate at first increased with crop age, but reached a maximum of approximately 1.5 whiteflies arriving per plant per day once the crop had reached maturity. A simple statistical model was fitted to sampling data of the number of whiteflies per plant (Nt). The model has three predictor variables: t which is the number of days since germination of the crop, Co(t) and Ci(t) which are the cumulated catches of whiteflies obtained from the outer and inner side, respectively, of the window traps from day 0 and until day t. The model explained 66% of variation in Nt, but surprisingly the model showed that Nt was positively associated with Ci, but negatively associated with Co. A possible explanation for this counterintuitive result is that Ci reflects trivial (non dispersal) flights, which is likely to be correlated with the population size, whereas Co reflects the emigration rate, which tends to increase when the whitefly population declines as a result of reduced food quality due to aging or overexploitation. If there are no other suitable fields in the vicinity, a fraction of the emigrating whiteflies will return to the original field to be caught at the outer side of the window traps. Such captures thus represent “false” immigrants.
Extremely Long Latency Benign Paroxysmal Positional Vertigo
Emil Riis Abrahamsen,Dan Dupont Hougaard 대한평형의학회 2017 Research in Vestibular Science Vol.16 No.2
Case history of a 67-year-old man diagnosed with posterior benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV) with extremely long latencies after holding the Dix-Hallpike position for five minutes. Additional vestibular assessment indicated partial unilateral hypofunction. The patient had a history compatible with classic BPPV. This patient, however, did not have any positional nystagmus after doing standard positional testing. With extremely prolonged Dix-Hallpike testing (five minutes), the patient experienced nausea and vertigo. Concomitantly classic peripheral nystagmus was observed. After a total of seventeen treatments in a reposition chair a total relief of symptoms was obtained. The extremely long latencies observed in this patient were ascribed to otoconial adherence and/or otoconial size. This type of BPPV has not previously been described.

The incorporation of activity in plasma lipid was determined after injection of u-C^(14)-glucose to normal laying hen. The extraction of total lipid from plasma was carried out by the method of Floch et al. with some modifications. The counting of carbon-14 activity was conducted by a Beckman Liquid Scintillation System, The concentration of plasma lipid was estimated as much as 3, 070㎎ per 100㎖ of plasma taken at 5 minutes after injection of tracer amount of u-C^(14)-glucose. The specific activity per gram of plasma lipid carbon atom per injected dose per ㎏ body weight increased gradually following the time after injection until 120 minutes, whereas the glucose activity decreased logarithmically. The partial incorporation quotient cf activity in plasma lipid from that of glucose was 0.73% until 120 minutes after the injection.

The radiochemical purity of ^(14)C(U)-glucose solution to be injected to normal laying lien was investigated for studying biokinetics of carbohydrate and lipid metabolism. The liquid scintillation counter w-as employed for determining the activity of carbon-14. The barium hydroxide and zinc sulfate were adopted to precipitate the protein in the solution. The glucose content in the solution was observed as 0.912㎎ per ㎖, applying Hultman's method. The specific activity of ^(14)C(U)-glucose solution was known as 31.3nCi/㎎ glucose. The glucose pentaacetate was synthesized to isolate the pure glucose from the solution. The specific activity of pure glucose was measured as 28.5nCi/㎎ glucose. Therefore, it was known that the radiochemical purity of the solution was 82.7%.
Normative Vestibular-Ocular Reflex Gain Values for the Vertical Semicircular Canals
Louise Hag,Emil Riis Abrahamsen,Dan Dupont Hougaard 대한평형의학회 2020 Research in Vestibular Science Vol.19 No.2
Objectives: To determine normative vestibular-ocular-reflex (VOR) gain values for the vertical semicircular canals (SCCs) within a Danish cohort of healthy adults. Normative data regarding the vertical SCCs are sparse. Assessing the function of all 6 SCCs is important, as some vestibular diseases may selectively affect specific SCCs.Methods: A prospective cross-sectional study of 60 subjects aged 18–65 years with no previous vestibular disorders. All subjects underwent complete exam-ination of all 6 SCCs with EyeSeeCam video head impulse test (vHIT) system. Results: Mean VOR gain values of the right anterior and left posterior canal were 1.46 and 1.43 respectively. For the left anterior and right posterior canals, mean VOR gain values were 0.96 and 0.97 respectively. Conclusions: Our results suggest that mean VOR gain is close to 1.4 in the right anterior and left posterior plane and close to one for the left anterior and right posterior plane when testing the vertical SCCs in healthy adults with the EyeSeeCam vHIT system.

The pool size of plasma glucose, turnover rate and other concerned items for glucose metabolism in normal laying hen were investigated by a single-injection method using U-C^(14)-glucose. The 11.6 nCi of pure dose was injected to a hen normally fed through the wing vein. The glucose concentration in plasma sample taken at 5 minutes after injections was 214㎎ per 100㎖. From the plottings of logarithmic standard specific activities of plasma taken from 5 to 120 minutes against the time after injection and from the regresion analysis, metabolic states were determined. The pool size was 1.078, turnover rate was 0.024 per minute, turnover time was 41 minutes, utilization rate was 26㎎/min. (0.83 g/hr/㎏ B.W. 3/4) and glucose space(extracellular fluid volume) was 25.3 per cent of body weight. The values obtained from. 10-50 minutes samples were similar to those described above, which we from 5-120 minutes samples.
