Mast Cells in Allergic Asthma and Beyond

        Sebastian Reuter,Michael Stassen,Christian Taube 연세대학교의과대학 2010 Yonsei medical journal Vol.51 No.6

Mast cells have been regarded for a long time as effector cells in IgE mediated type I reactions and in host defence against parasites. However, they are resident in all environmental exposed tissues and express a wide variety of receptors, suggesting that these cells can also function as sentinels in innate immune responses. Indeed, studies have demonstrated an important role of mast cells during the induction of life-saving antibacterial responses. Furthermore, recent findings have shown that mast cells promote and modulate the development of adaptive immune responses, making them an important hinge of innate and acquired immunity. In addition, mast cells and several mast cell-produced mediators have been shown to be important during the development of allergic airway diseases. In the present review, we will summarize findings on the role of mast cells during the development of adaptive immune responses and highlight their function, especially during the development of allergic asthma.

      • Political Parties and the Power of Money in Indonesia and Beyond

Thomas Reuter 서강대학교 동아연구소 2015 TRaNS(Trans –Regional and –National Studies of Sou Vol.3 No.2

Political parties in Indonesia and in other parts of Southeast Asia have become vitally dependent on the financial support of individuals or conglomerates with large private fortunes. A remarkable new development is that some ofthe billionaires who have long sponsored political parties have decided to out themselves as political leaders, and thus to adopt the style ofoligarchs. I define an oligarchy as a society featuring systematic conflation of political and economic power within the same individuals or within small, elite groups of such individuals in a manner that is visible, tolerated and hence legitimated. The gradual shift from clandestine money politics to open oligarchy is a significant challenge for contemporary liberal democracies. Conflicts of interest between the demands of public office and their private interests would seem difficult to avoid for politicians who also run large business empires and own great estates. On the other hand, for billionaire sponsors of political parties to come forward and stand for public office personally also means that their hitherto clandestine influence is becoming more transparent, and their conduct and decisions more subject to public scrutiny and accountability. This article describes how both direct and indirect ways of conducting money politics operate and coexist within different types of political parties in Indonesia today, what the significance of these differences is and what is changing; with special reference to the 2014 parliamentary elections in Indonesia.

Influence of Post-Implantation Annealing Parameters on the Focused Ion Beam Directed Nucleation of InAs Quantum Dots

        M. Mehta,D. Reuter,M. Kamruddin,A. K. Tyagi,A. D. Wieck 성균관대학교(자연과학캠퍼스) 성균나노과학기술원 2015 NANO Vol.10 No.4

We present the effect of post-implantation annealing conditions on the structural and optical quality of InAs quantum dots (QDs) grown by combination of focused ion beam (FIB) and molecular beam epitaxy (MBE) approach. A FIB of Ga+ ion was employed to pattern a homogeneously GaAs buffer layers and then, an in situ annealing step followed by InAs deposition was performed. Three different post-implantation annealing conditions were tested and under well-optimized conditions, a dislocation and defect-free InAs QDs growth on FIB patterned surface was successfully achieved. Furthermore, using photoluminescence (PL) study, we demonstrate that our best sample shows almost similar optical quality as MBE grown QDs on unimplanted GaAs surface. The patterning technique described here can presumably be applied to systems other than InAs/GaAs and highly interesting for site-controlled nucleation of QDs that finds its potential applications in nanooptoelectronic devices.

Optically controlled initialization and read-out of an electron spin bound to a fluorine donor in ZnSe

        Kim, Y.M.,Sleiter, D.,Sanaka, K.,Reuter, D.,Lischka, K.,Yamamoto, Y.,Pawlis, A. Elsevier 2014 CURRENT APPLIED PHYSICS Vol.14 No.9

Here we report photon antibunching and magneto-spectroscopy of a single electron spin bound to a fluorine donor in a ZnMgSe/ZnSe QW nanostructure. The results confirm the presence of an optically controllable lambda-system which allows the optical manipulation of the electron bound to the neutral fluorine donor as a spin qubit. Moreover, we achieved optical spin pumping of the qubit by resonant excitation of each of the four allowed transitions of the lambda system. We verified the spin transfer by detecting single photons when the bound electron decays into the opposite spin state. The results presented here constitutes an elegant initialization and the read-out procedure of the electron spin qubit bound to a fluorine donor which are prerequisite for coherent optical control of an impurity based solid-state spin qubit.

Emergency euthanasia of cattle challenged with Escherichia coli O157:H7 - A case study for evaluating the response to an infectious disease outbreak

        Brandon H. Gilroyed,John P. Kastelic,Tim Reuter,Tim A. McAllister 대한수의학회 2013 JOURNAL OF VETERINARY SCIENCE Vol.14 No.1

In the event of an infectious disease outbreak in cattle, carcasses must be disposed of in a rapid and contained manner. This brief communication details injection of a barbiturate to euthanize cattle inoculated with Escherichia coli O157:H7 followed by carcass composting in a manner that prevents the spread of infectious agents.

Thermo-kinetic dynamics of near-limit cool diffusion flames

Sohn, Chae Hoon,Han, Hee Sun,Reuter, Christopher B.,Ju, Yiguang,Won, Sang Hee Elsevier 2017 Proceedings of the Combustion Institute Vol.36 No.1

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>The dynamics of near-limit cool diffusion flames are investigated experimentally and numerically by studying transient flame evolution and instability. In order to observe the effects of chemistry-transport coupling on ignition and instability in a cool diffusion flame, diffusion flames of n-heptane and pure oxygen are sensitized by ozone in a counterflow burner. First, it is found from experimental observations that the immediate addition of ozone to the oxidizer side of a frozen flow either initiates a cool diffusion flame or triggers a two-stage ignition into a hot flame. Second, a cool flame near its extinction limit can be destabilized by a perturbation of the fuel mole fraction, eventually leading to flame extinction. The recorded flame chemiluminescence signals reveal repeated flame oscillations before extinction. Next, details of the transient dynamics of near-limit cool diffusion flames are explored through numerical calculations by adopting the same perturbation method. Experimental observations of unsteady flame initiation and instability are simulated, and it is found that the ignition process is highly sensitive to the perturbed ozone mole fraction and that the ignition delay times in a counterflow configuration are significantly affected by the diffusive transport of species with high concentration. The instability mechanism of a cool flame is found to be distinct from that of diffusive-thermal instability. The results show that the instability behavior of a cool flame is a thermo-kinetic instability, which is triggered and controlled by the chemical kinetics associated with the OH radical population in the negative temperature coefficient chemical kinetic regime coupled with heat production and loss.</P>

Protein can be taken up by damaged wheat roots and transported to the stem

        Jay Rasmussen,Brandon H. Gilroyed,Tim Reuter,Ana Badea,François Eudes,Robert Graf,André Laroche,Nat NV Kav,Tim A. McAllister 한국식물학회 2015 Journal of Plant Biology Vol.58 No.1

Proteins of animal origin can represent a portion of the overall nitrogen (N) pool in the soil environment and there is a possibility that plants may utilize animal proteins as a N source. Using wheat (Triticum aestivum L.) we investigated if the model protein, ovalbumin was taken up into the roots and transported within the plant. In roots, ovalbumin was associated with the epidermis when no root damage was evident, but with minor root damage, it was present in intercellular spaces throughout the cortex and at the endodermis. Ovalbumin was only found in the stem when minor damage to the root system was evident. Suspension cultures of wheat protoplasts revealed that ovalbumin was not assimilated into individual plant cells. Our results suggest that ovalbumin uptake and subsequent movement in wheat is possible only after root damage has occurred. Apoplastic movement may enable animal protein to enter plant tissues above the soil level where they could be consumed by grazers.

Growth Pathways in Ultralow Temperature Ge Nucleation from Au

        Kim, B. J.,Wen, C.-Y.,Tersoff, J.,Reuter, M. C.,Stach, E. A.,Ross, F. M. American Chemical Society 2012 NANO LETTERS Vol.12 No.11

<P>Device integration on flexible or low-cost substrates has driven interest in the low-temperature growth of semiconductor nanostructures. Using in situ electron microscopy, we examine the Au-catalyzed growth of crystalline Ge at temperatures as low as 150 °C. For this materials system, the model for low temperature growth of nanowires, we find three distinct reaction pathways. The lowest temperature reactions are distinguished by the absence of any purely liquid state. From measurements of reaction rates and parameters such as supersaturation, we explain the sequence of pathways as arising from a kinetic competition between the imposed time scale for Ge addition and the inherent time scale for Ge nucleation. This enables an understanding of the conditions under which catalytic Ge growth can occur at very low temperatures, with implications for nanostructure formation on temperature-sensitive substrates.</P><P><B>Graphic Abstract</B> <IMG SRC='http://pubs.acs.org/appl/literatum/publisher/achs/journals/content/nalefd/2012/nalefd.2012.12.issue-11/nl303225a/production/images/medium/nl-2012-03225a_0006.gif'></P>
