Anatomical considerations of percutaneous transvenous mitral annuloplasty

        Lalit Mehra,Shashi Raheja,Sneh Agarwal,Yashoda Rani,Kulwinder Kaur,Anita Tuli 대한해부학회 2016 Anatomy & Cell Biology Vol.49 No.1

Percutaneous transvenous mitral annuloplasty (PTMA) has evolved as a latest procedure for the treatment of functional mitral regurgitation. It reduces mitral valve annulus (MVA) size and increases valve leaflet coaptation via compression of coronary sinus (CS). Anatomical considerations for this procedure were elucidated in the present study. In 40 formalin fixed adult cadaveric human hearts, relation of the venous channel formed by CS and great cardiac vein (GCV) to MVA and the adjacent arteries was described, at 6 points by making longitudinal sections perpendicular to the plane of MVA, numbered 1–6 starting from CS ostium. CS/GCV formed a semicircular venous channel on the atrial side of MVA. Based on the distance of CS/GCV from MVA, two patterns were identified. In 37 hearts, the venous channel at point 2 was widely separated from the MVA compared to the two ends and in three hearts a nonconsistent pattern was observed. GCV crossed circumflex artery superficially. GCV or CS crossed the left marginal artery and ventricular branches of circumflex artery superficially in 17 and 23 hearts, respectively. As the venous channel was related more to the left atrial wall, PTMA devices probably exert an indirect traction on MVA. The arteries crossing deep to the venous channel may be compressed by PTMA device leading to myocardial ischemia. Knowledge of the spatial relations of MVA and a preoperative and postoperative angiogram may help to reduce such complications during PTMA.

Right sided descending and sigmoid colon: its embryological basis and clinical implications

        Preeti Shrivastava,Anita Tuli,Sohinder Kaur,Shashi Raheja 대한해부학회 2013 Anatomy & Cell Biology Vol.46 No.4

Anatomical variations of the colon are described by various authors, but the occurrence of right sided descending and sigmoid colon is rare and has not been reported. We found that the anomalous right-sided descending and sigmoid colon had four parts. The proximal segment of the first part consisted of the descending colon extending across the midline from the splenic flexure to the portion supplied by the left colic artery. The distal segment was supplied by the superior sigmoid artery. The second and third parts formed a loop in the right lumbar region anterior to the lumbar cecum. The fourth part was in the lesser pelvis, extending from right sacroiliac joint to the third sacral body. Parts two, three, and four were supplied by the inferior sigmoid artery, which arose from the right side of the inferior mesenteric artery. The ascending and transverse colon was normally placed. This is a rare anomaly that has not been reported so far in adults and is of immense importance to interventional radiologists and colorectal surgeons. The embryological basis of such an anomaly is defective fixation occurring as early as the 12th-17th week of intrauterine life.

The study of hyperostosic variants: significance of hyperostotic variants of human skulls in anthropology

        Jasbir Kaur,Dhirendra Srivastava,Davinder Singh,Shashi Raheja 대한해부학회 2012 Anatomy & Cell Biology Vol.45 No.4

Minor variations in the ossicles, foramina and ridges of the cranium have aroused the curiosity of anatomists for many decades. These non-metric variants help us to study the genetic relationships among ancient populations. Since these traits show considerable frequency differences in different populations, they can be used as anthropological characters in epidemiological studies. These variants indirectly reflect the part of underlying genotype of a given population thus implying their usefulness in biological comparisons of related groups. They can be used for the assessment of the existence of the parental structures within a community or as taxonomic indicators. For anthropological studies, the traits should be genetically determined, vary in frequency between different populations and should not show age, sex, and side dependency. The present study was conducted on hundred dry adult human skulls from Northern India. They were sexed and studied for the presence of hyperostotic traits (double hypoglossal canal, jugular foramen bridging, and paracondylar process). Sexual and side dimorphism was observed. None of the traits had shown statistically significant side and sexual dimorphism. Since the dimorphism is exhibited by none of them, it can be postulated that these traits are predominantly under genetic control and can be effectively used for population studies.

Genetic Evaluation of First Lactation Traits in Sahiwal Cattle Using Restricted Maximum Likelihood Technique

        Choudhary, V.,Kothekar, M.D.,Raheja, K.L.,Kasturiwale, N.N.,Khire, D.W.,Kumar, P. Asian Australasian Association of Animal Productio 2003 Animal Bioscience Vol.16 No.5

The data on 283 Sahiwal cows, sired by 16 bulls, maintained at Cattle Breeding Farm of Nagpur Veterinary College and Dairy Farm of Agricultural College, Nagpur, were considered for the estimation of genetic parameters. Variance and covariance estimates of first lactation traits were obtained using restricted maximum likelihood technique (REML). When first lactation milk yield (FLMY), first lactation length (FLL) and average daily yield (ADY) traits were considered for REML analysis, the heritabilities were $0.184{\pm}0.146$, $0.132{\pm}0.131$ and $0.141{\pm}0.133$, respectively. While, genetic and phenotypic correlations between them were medium to high except phenotypic correlations between FLL and ADY (-0.025). REML procedure considering FLMY, age at first calving (AFC) and first service period (FSP) combination exhibits heritabilities as $0.274{\pm}0.173$, $0.506{\pm}0.233$ and $0.274{\pm}0.172$, respectively. Genetic correlations were $-0.120{\pm}0.376$, $0.225{\pm}0.423$ and $0.365{\pm}0.331$ between FLMY and AFC, FLMY and FSP, AFC and FSP, respectively. Phenotypic correlations were 0.057, 0.289 and 0.123, respectively. Considering all five traits REML combination heritabilities estimated were $0.238{\pm}0.162$, $0.160{\pm}0.139$, $0.136{\pm}0.132$, $0.409{\pm}0.209$ and $0.259{\pm}0.168$ for FLMY, FLL, ADY, AFC and FSP, respectively. The genetic correlations were positive except FLMY and AFC. The phenotypic correlations were also positive except FLL and ADY, ADY and FSP. Almost all estimates were associated with high standard error.

A Vision-Based Method to Find Fingertips in a Closed Hand

        Chaudhary, Ankit,Vatwani, Kapil,Agrawal, Tushar,Raheja, J.L. Korea Information Processing Society 2012 Journal of information processing systems Vol.8 No.3

Hand gesture recognition is an important area of research in the field of Human Computer Interaction (HCI). The geometric attributes of the hand play an important role in hand shape reconstruction and gesture recognition. That said, fingertips are one of the important attributes for the detection of hand gestures and can provide valuable information from hand images. Many methods are available in scientific literature for fingertips detection with an open hand but very poor results are available for fingertips detection when the hand is closed. This paper presents a new method for the detection of fingertips in a closed hand using the corner detection method and an advanced edge detection algorithm. It is important to note that the skin color segmentation methodology did not work for fingertips detection in a closed hand. Thus the proposed method applied Gabor filter techniques for the detection of edges and then applied the corner detection algorithm for the detection of fingertips through the edges. To check the accuracy of the method, this method was tested on a vast number of images taken with a webcam. The method resulted in a higher accuracy rate of detections from the images. The method was further implemented on video for testing its validity on real time image capturing. These closed hand fingertips detection would help in controlling an electro-mechanical robotic hand via hand gesture in a natural way.

Dorsoscapularis triangularis: embryological and phylogenetic characterization of a rare variation of trapezius

        Lalit Mehra,Anita Tuli,Shashi Raheja 대한해부학회 2016 Anatomy & Cell Biology Vol.49 No.3

The muscle trapezius shows considerable morphological diversity. Variations include an anomalous origin and complete or partial absence of the muscle. The present study reported, a hitherto undocumented complete bilateral absence of the cervical part of trapezius. Based on its peculiar origin and insertion, it was named dorsoscapularis triangularis. The embryological, phylogenetic and molecular basis of the anomaly was elucidated. Failure of cranial migration of the trapezius component of the branchial musculature anlage to gain attachment on the occipital bone, cervical spinous processes, ligamentum nuchae between 11 mm and 16 mm stage of the embryo, resulted in this anomaly. A surgeon operating on the head and neck region or a radiologist analyzing a magnetic resonance imaging of the cervical region would find the knowledge of this morphological variation of trapezius useful in making clinical decisions.
