Effects of Simulated In-Transit Vibration on the Vase Life and Post-Harvest Characteristics of Cut Rose Flowers

Hossein Alizadeh Pouri,Abdolhossein Rezaei Nejad,Feizollah Shahbazi 한국원예학회 2017 Horticulture, Environment, and Biotechnology Vol.58 No.1

We examined whether exposure to vibration during transport affects the quality of cut roses. Using alaboratory vibration simulator, in-transit vibration of 7.5 or 10 Hz was applied to two cut rose cultivars (‘Polar Star’and ‘Revival’) at three positions within a compartmented storage bin (top, middle, and bottom) for 10 or 15 min. Post-harvest characteristics of the cut flowers were measured in a test room. We observed that in both cultivars, vibration significantly reduced vase life (VL), decreased relative fresh weight (RFW), and increased flower openingrate (FOR). No significant differences were observed between vibration frequencies, positions, or durations in ‘PolarStar’ with respect to VL. Furthermore, we applied a simulated vibration of 10 Hz to three cut rose cultivars (‘PolarStar’, ‘Magic Red’, and ‘Full House’). We observed that ‘Polar Star’ was more sensitive to vibration damage thanthe other two cultivars. Pulse treatments coupled with the exogenous application of silver thiosulfate (STS), an ethyleneaction inhibitor, were applied to ‘Polar Star’ before and after vibration. Independent of the concentration used andtime of application, STS significantly decreased FOR, water uptake, water loss, and increased RFW. However, only1 mM STS applied before vibration extended VL compared to non-vibrated control VL. Thus, vibration duringtransport could shorten the VL of cut rose flowers. The amount of vibration damage in cut rose flowers is cultivardependent. Taken together, our data suggest that ethylene underlies the negative impact of vibration on post-harvestcharacteristics of cut rose flowers. Application of ethylene action inhibitors before transit could reduce or prevent thevibration effects on the post-harvest quality of sensitive cut rose cultivars.

      • Impact of Technology Diffusion on the Innovation Capacity and Competitiveness of Automotive Components SME’s in South Africa

        David Phaho,Anastassios Pouris KINFORMS 2008 Management Review Vol.3 No.1

The automotive industry is an important bellwether for the manufacturing prowess of a country. Key to a globally competitive automotive industry is the presence of innovative, technology driven component manufacturers to provide inputs to the automotive assemblers and manufacturers. In this paper an empirical assessment of the innovative capacity of as well as efficacy of government funded instruments to enhance the innovative capacity of automotive component manufacturers, many of them Small and Medium sized Enterprises in South Africa is presented. The results show that most of the automotive component manufacturers are neither focusing on any in-house research, new to the market innovation activities nor seek assistance from these publicly funded instruments to improve their competitiveness through technology diffusion or intelligence. The long term implications for these firms are that they could lose their place in the automotive supply chain in an industry where rationalization and global sourcing of technology inputs by automotive assemblers and manufacturers are fast becoming strategic imperatives.

      • Slide Session : OS-GAS-08 ; Gastroenterology : Correlation of Noninvasive Serum Fibrosis Markers with Stage of Fibrosis in Chronic Hepatitis

        ( Mohammadreza Abdollahi ),( Aliasghar Pouri ),( Mohammadhossein Somi ) 대한내과학회 2014 대한내과학회 추계학술대회 Vol.2014 No.1

Background: Chronic hepatitis is defined as a necroinflammatory disease of the liver continuing for at least six months. The aim of this study was to evaluate the role of noninvasive fibrosis markers by assessing the association among histological staging and these diagnostic parameters in patients with chronic hepatitis. Methods: We studied 221 patients with chronic hepatitis between 2011 and 2013. Routine biochemical indices and serum fibrosis indexes such as aspartate aminotransferase (AST)/alanine aminotransferase (ALT) ratio (AAR), AST to platelet ratio index (APRI) and Fibrosis 4 score (FIB-4) were determined, and the histological grade and stage of the liver biopsy specimens were scored according to the Ishak scoring system. Receiver operating characteristic curve (ROC) analysis was conducted to compare diagnostic accuracies of these markers for prediction of significant fibrosis. Results: We identified 221 liver biopsies from chronic hepatitis patients with contemporaneous laboratory values for imputing AAR, APRI and FIB-4. From all, 135 males (61.1%) and 86 females (38.9%), with the mean age of 39.6±14.4 were studied. FIB- 4, APRI and AAR were correlated significantly with the stage of fibrosis, with a higher correlation coefficient than other markers in the patients with Hepatitis B (r= 0.46), C (r= 0.58) and autoimmune hepatitis (r=0.28). FIB-4 (AUROC=0.84) and APRI (AUROC= 0.78) was superior to AAR at distinguishing severe fibrosis from mild-to-moderate fibrosis, especially in patients with hepatitis B and C. Conclusions: Application of these markers was good at distinguishing significant . - brosis and decreased the need for staging liver biopsy specimens among patients with chronic hepatitis.

      • Parental Knowledge and Attitudes about Human Papilloma Virus in Iran

Ghojazadeh, Morteza,Naghavi-Behzad, Mohammad,Azar, Zahra Fardi,Saleh, Parviz,Ghorashi, Sona,Pouri, Ali-Asghar Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2012 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.13 No.12

Infection by human papillomavirus (HPV) is one of common sexually transmitted diseases leading to cervical cancer. Evaluation of parental knowledge and attitudes toward HPV were aims of present study to provide an appropriate method to decrease burden of this infection on society. During this study, 358 parents were assessed for knowledge about HPV and its related disorders. Some 76% of parents had no information about HPV infection and among the informed parents 36% had obtained their information via internet and others from studying medical resources. The average score of mothers information about HPV infection was higher than that of fathers, and also educational level and age had significant impact on knowledge of parents about HPV. Parent knowledge about the hazards of HPV was higher than their knowledge about modes of transmission. Lack of awareness about HPV infection was high in this study, underlining the urgency of education among all adult people in our society.
