Technology has had a tremendous impact on our daily lives. Recently, technology and its impact on aging has become an expanding field of inquiry. A major reason for this interest is that the use of technology can help older people who experience deteriorating health to live independently. In this paper we give a brief review of the in-home monitoring technologies for the elderly. In the pilot study, we analyze the possibility of employing the data generated by a continuous, unobtrusive nursing home monitoring system for predicting elevated(abnormal)pulse pressure(PP) in elderly(PP=systolic blood pressure-diastolic blood pressure). Our sensor data capture external information(behavioral) about the resident that is subsequently reflected in the predicted PP. By continuously predicting the possibility of elevated pulse pressure we may alert the nursing staff when some predefined threshold is exceeded. This approach may provide additional blood pressure monitoring for the elderly persons susceptible to blood pressure variations during the time between two nursing visits. We conducted a retrospective pilot study on two residents of the TigerPlace aging in place facility with age over 70, that had blood pressure measured between 100 and 300 times during a period of two years. The pilot study suggested that abnormal pulse pressure can be reasonably well estimated (an area under ROC curve of about 0.75) using apartment bed and motion sensors.
SWEEP METHOD IN ANALYSIS OPTIMAL CONTROL FOR RENDEZ-VOUS PROBLEMS

This paper deals with determining the sufficient conditions of minimum for the class of problems in which the necessary conditions of optimum are satisfied in the strengthened form Legendre-Clebsch. To this paper, we shall use the sweep method which analysis the conditions of existence of the conjugated points on the optimal trajectory. The study we have done evaluates the command variation on the neighboring optimal trajectory. The sufficient conditions of minimum are obtained by imposing the positivity of the second variation. The results that this method offers are applied to the problem o the orbital rendez-vous for the linear case of the equations of movement.

Transnational Perspectives in Nelson Mandela`s Writings

As the Cold War world was divided according to political and ideological alliances and specific terminologies developed on both sides of the Iron Curtain, Nelson Mandela’s use of the term “cosmopolitanism” in one context and “internationalism” in another situation highlights a complex conceptual map that has been flattened out after 1989. This article is focusing on tracing the developing transnational dimension of Nelson Mandela’s worldview during the Cold War as well as the terms of this engagement. What are the tenets of Mandela’s comprehensive international vision and how did it evolve during the apartheid years, as the leader spent much of this period behind bars, with limited contact with the world outside? To provide an answer to this question, this article looks at Nelson Mandela’s autobiographical writings and several speeches during his presidency to discuss the shaping of his transnational perspective. In order to discern the tenets of his international approach, the article engages with an array of terminology, ranging from cosmopolitanism to internationalism and from Pan-Africanism to Afro-Asian solidarity, which are placed in the context of the Cold War. Mandela used both liberal humanist terms that align with a cosmopolitan outlook as well as a lexicon of solidarity that resonated with leftist internationalism, as demanded by the ANC’s political alliances and attentive to the ideological tensions produced by the Cold War.
Management of Organic Mitral Regurgitation: Guideline Recommendations and Controversies

Mitral regurgitation (MR) represents the second most frequent valvular heart disease. The appropriate management of organic MR remainsunclear in many aspects, especially in several specific clinical scenarios. This review aims to discuss the current guideline recommendationsregarding the management of organic MR, while highlighting the controversial aspects encountered in daily clinical practice. The roleof imaging is essential in establishing the most appropriate type of surgical treatment (repair or replace), which is based on morphologicalmitral valve (MV) characteristics (reparability of the valve) and local surgical expertise in valve repair. The potential advantages of 3-dimensionalechocardiography in assessing the MV are discussed. Other modern imaging techniques (tissue Doppler and speckle tracking)may provide additional useful information in borderline cases. Exercise echocardiography (evaluating MR severity, pulmonary pressure, orright ventricular function) may have an important role in the management of difficult cases. Finally, the moment when surgery is no longeran option and alternative solutions should be sought is also discussed. Although in everyday clinical practice the timing of surgery is notalways straightforward, some newer clinical and echocardiographic indicators can guide this decision and help improve the outcome ofthese patients.
