        Mainstreaming Gender in Politics in Bangladesh: Role of NGOs

        ‘Gender mainstreaming’ has been regarded as one of the strongest approaches to deal with the issue of equality policy for women. In order to mainstream women in the political process, a number of NGOs have been carrying out different programs in Bangladesh for building awareness among women so that they could opt for participation in the political process. The paper analyzes the role of NGOs in the process of mainstreaming gender in politics in Bangladesh in general and in the enactment of the Local Government (Union Parishad) (Second Amendment) Act of 1997 in particular. Based on empirical data collected through an open-ended structured questionnaire and available secondary data, the study findings reveal that despite having no formal access to the policy process, NGOs augment participation of women in the political process through informal means as is exemplified by their training programs that enhance women’s social and economic status.

        Track sports such as “Short track” and “Speed skating” are some of the winter sporting discipline dominated by South Korea which have high hopes for the upcoming 2018 Pyeongchang Olympics. Despite the winter sports being in the limelight, training of the seasonal sports are not only problematic due to accessibility but also because of financial reasons due to which, dry land training such as slide board exercise has been considered by coaches to enhance endurance, agility, balance, body composition, muscular strength, proprioception, as well as cardiorespiratory fitness. Although the exercise was initially developed for sports specific off the ice training, slide board training has been also effective for recreational purposes, conditioning, functional rehabilitation for ACL injuries as well as activities involving lateral movement. Similarly, an increased demand of sports oriented fitness equipment’s and simulators have been seen in the field of sports however, without substantial biomechanical evidence as well as interactive visual feedback of performance to the user. Hence, the purpose of the study was to provide quantitative data of skating maneuver performed on sliding board for developing augmented reality based feedback skating simulator.

        이미지 프로세싱 기반 탁구공 자동추적 프로그램 개발

        [목적] 본 연구의 목적은 탁구 전술 수립을 위한 정보를 신속하기 획득하기 위해 이미지 프로세싱 기술을 활용하여 탁구공의 이동궤적을 추적할 수 있는 알고리즘과 소프트웨어를 개발하는데 있다. [방법] 컴퓨터 비전 분야에서 사용하고 있는 알고리즘을 탁구 동호인 2경기와 국제대회 2경기에 적용하고 보완하였다. 개발한 소프트웨어를 통해 자동으로 획득한 구역별 탁구공 바운스 빈도와 수기로 획득한 빈도를 비교하는 신뢰도 분석을 수행하였다. [결과] 동호인 2경기의 평균 신뢰도는 85.1±3.69%, 합계 오류 14.9±3.69%로 나타났고 과대추정 오류 52.2±9.78%, 과소추정 오류 47.8±9.78%이다. 국제대회 2경기의 평균 신뢰도는 71.8±0.87%, 합계 오류 28.2±0.87%, 과대추정 오류 82.0±8.03%, 과소추정 오류 19.2±7.75%이다. [결론] 본 연구에서 개발한 알고리즘과 소프트웨어의 목표 신뢰도는 80%로 동호인 경기에서만 달성하였지만 국제대회 경기의 경우 대체적으로 과대추정 오류가 높아 추후 개선할 수 있는 가능성을 보여줬다. [Purpose] The purpose of this study was to develop algorithms and software that can track the trajectory of table tennis balls using image-processing algorithms to obtain information quickly for under and establish tactics used in table tennis. [Methods] The algorithms used in the field of computer vision were applied on two matches played by novice and two matches during international competitions by elite athletes. Reliability analysis was performed by comparing the table tennis ball bounce frequency in each zone obtained through the automatic method and the manual method. [Results] The mean reliability of the two novice games was only 85.1 ± 3.69%, total error was 14.9 ± 3.69%, overestimation error was 52.2 ± 9.78%, and underestimation error was 47.8 ± 9.78%. While the mean reliability of the two international tournaments was 71.8 ± 0.87%, the total error was 28.2 ± 0.87%, overestimation error was 82.0 ± 8.03%, and underestimation error was 19.2 ± 7.75%. [Conclusion] Although the target reliability of algorithms and software developed in this study was achieved only in novice competitions with 80%, the over-estimation errors were generally high in international competitions, showing the potential for further improvement.

        Primary Pharmacological and Other Important Findings on the Medicinal Plant "Aconitum Heterophyllum" (Aruna)

        Aconitum Heterophyllum (A. Heterophyllum) is an indigenous medicinal plant of India and belongs to the family Ranunculaceae. A. Heterophyllum is known to possess a number of therapeutic effects. For very ancient times, this plant has been used in some formulations in the traditional healing system of India, i.e., Ayurveda. It is reported to have use in treating patients with urinary infections, diarrhea, and inflammation. It also has been used as an expectorant and for the promotion of hepatoprotective activity. The chemical studies of the plant have revealed that various parts of the plant contain alkaloids, carbohydrates, proteins and amino acids, saponins, glycosides, quinones, flavonoids, terpenoids, etc. In the present study, a comprehensive phytochemistry and pharmacognosy, as well as the medicinal properties, of A. Heterophyllum are discussed. Scientific information on the plant was collected from various sources, such as electronic sources (Google scholar, Pubmed) and some old classical text books of Ayurveda and Ethnopharmacology. The study also presents a review of the literature on A. Heterophyllum, as well as the primary pharmacological and other important findings on this medicine. This review article should provide useful information to and be a valuable tool for new researchers who are initiating studies on the plant A. Heterophyllum.

      • Effect of prolonged racing on muscle activity and spatiotemporal variables: double-poling technique

        <P>[Purpose] The purpose of this study was to examine the effect of a 40-minute race on muscle activity and spatiotemporal cycle variables at four-time points during a 12-km roller skiing test using the double-poling technique. [Subjects and Methods] Five elite cross-country (XC) skiers on the Korean National reserve team participated in the study. Part of a biathlon course that consisted of both flat land and slopes was selected, and three measurements were recorded after every 4-km lap. Spatiotemporal variables, mean frequency and mean amplitude of 6 muscles were the chosen computational parameters. [Results] Significant differences were observed in cycle time and rate. The mean frequency of the upper-body muscles exhibited declining trends, with statistically significant differences for the triceps brachii. In addition, there were significant differences in the mean amplitude of the tibialis anterior and gastrocnemius. The activity of the triceps brachii, tibialis anterior, and gastrocnemius showed some degree of dependence on the technique. [Conclusion] Training and race strategies that improve the function of elbow extensors and ankle dorsiflexors are important in XC skiing; the application of roller-ski training research to actual XC skiing competitions is needed.</P>

        Effect of Passive Temperature Therapy of the Femoral Muscles on the Countermovement Jump Performance

        Objective: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the effect of passive-acute temperature therapy of the femoral muscle and dynamic warm-up on the countermovement jump performance. Method: Twenty male track and field athletes from national team underwent three treatments applied on the femoral muscles; cold temperature treatment, thermal treatment and dynamic warm-up. The variables extracted at 2 time points (pre-measurement and post measurement) were the temperature of the left and right femoral muscle, displacement & velocity of centre of mass, peak power out, range of motion and moment & power of the knee joint. Results: There was a statistically significant difference in the temperature of the femoral muscle according to measurement time which was high in the order of thermal treatment, dynamic treatment and cold treatment. The jump height was the highest in the dynamic warm-up with no statistically significant difference for the range of motion of the knee joint. The peak power out at dynamic warm-up and the power of the knee joint were statistically significant according to the treatment and measurement time. Conclusion: Local cold and thermal treatment of femoral muscles at ambient temperature did not improve jump performance, while dynamic warm-up was considered to be effective for maintaining the performance of the activities that require strong muscular power.
