Relationship between the Ball Velocity and Upper Extremity Kinematic Variables during an Overarm Throwing Task of Inexperienced Individuals

        Ozkaya, Gizem,Jung, Hae Ryun,Jeong, In Sub,Choi, Min Ra,Shin, Min Young,Lin, Xue,Heo, Woo Seong,Kim, Mi Sun,Lee, Ki Kwang Korean Society of Sport Biomechanics 2017 한국운동역학회지 Vol.27 No.1

Objective: The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between the ball velocity and the upper extremity kinematics for both dominant and non-dominant side in inexperienced participants about an overarm throwing task. Method: Seven women who are inexperienced in overarm throwing participated in this study (Age: $25.1{\pm}2.4years$, Height: $160.8{\pm}3.5$; Weight $56.5{\pm}7.8$). Participants visit the laboratory for three days with one day rest between test sessions. Whole body 3-dimensional (3D) motion capture was recorded during the overarm throwing trials with ten cameras Vicon motion analysis system (T-10, T40, Oxford Metrics Ltd, UK). Total 45 overarm throwing were recorded for each side for each test session. Ball speed also was measured 3 meters away behind the subjects and recorded for every trial. Results: Mean ball velocity was higher for dominant hand compared to non-dominant hand (p <.05). Trunk segment variables (maximum angles and angular velocities) showed the most consistent relationship with the ball velocity. Conclusion: The importance of the trunk segment during the throwing activities can be seen in some individuals. But inconsistent results between subjects emphasize the importance of the individuals' movement patterns especially for bilateral sports. The future studies should be conduct about the sequence of segments, kinetic variables and effect of training.

Non linear vibrations of stepped beam system under different boundary conditions

        Ozkaya, E.,Tekin, A. Techno-Press 2007 Structural Engineering and Mechanics, An Int'l Jou Vol.27 No.3

In this study, the nonlinear vibrations of stepped beams having different boundary conditions were investigated. The equations of motions were obtained using Hamilton's principle and made non dimensional. The stretching effect induced non-linear terms to the equations. Forcing and damping terms were also included in the equations. The dimensionless equations were solved for six different set of boundary conditions. A perturbation method was applied to the equations of motions. The first terms of the perturbation series lead to the linear problem. Natural frequencies for the linear problem were calculated exactly for different boundary conditions. Second order non-linear terms of the perturbation series behave as corrections to the linear problem. Amplitude and phase modulation equations were obtained. Non-linear free and forced vibrations were investigated in detail. The effects of the position and magnitude of the step, as well as effects of different boundary conditions on the vibrations, were determined.

Five-year Outcomes of Ranibizumab in Neovascular Age-related Macular Degeneration: Real Life Clinical Experience

        Abdullah Ozkaya,Zeynep Alkin,Mesut Togac,Sibel Ahmet,Irfan Perente,Muhittin Taskapili 대한안과학회 2017 Korean Journal of Ophthalmology Vol.31 No.5

Purpose: To evaluate the outcomes of 5-year ranibizumab treatment in neovascular age-related macular degeneration (nAMD) in a single center and real life clinical setting. Methods: The records of nAMD patients who were treated with ranibizumab between January 2010 and June 2011 were retrospectively reviewed. Patients who completed 5 years of follow-up were included. Main outcome measures were change in best-corrected visual acuity, central retinal thickness, and visit and injection numbers. Results: Forty-four eyes of 37 patients were included. Mean best-corrected visual acuity decreased from 0.82 ± 0.69 to 1.11 ± 0.65 logarithm of minimal angle of resolution after 5 years. Twenty-four eyes (54.5%) had visual acuity loss ≥3 lines, and 20 eyes (45.5%) had stable or improved vision (loss <3 lines, remained stable, or gained ≥1 line) at month 60. The mean total number of visits was 25.3 ± 5.8 (range, 14 to 42), and the mean total number of injections was 12.6 ± 6.4 (range, 3 to 26) at month 60. Conclusions: Half of the ranibizumab-treated nAMD patients maintained their vision during the 5 years of follow- up. Visit and injection numbers were found to be lower than in prospective studies, reflecting a real world clinical practice.

        Ozlem Ozkaya Akagunduz,Suzan Guven Yilmaz,Emin Tavlayan,Mine Esen Baris,Filiz Afrashi,Mustafa Esassolak 대한암학회 2022 Cancer Research and Treatment Vol.54 No.2

Purpose This study aimed to evaluate the radiation-induced adverse effects on ocular structures in head and neck cancer patients and investigate the radiation dose-volume effects on the cornea, lacrimal gland, retina, optic nerve and chiasm. Materials and Methods A total of 38 eyes of 19 patients were included in this prospective, cohort study. All patients underwent complete ophthalmological examination in addition to contrast sensitivity, visual field and visual evoked potentials (VEP) tests. Ophthalmological examinations and psychophysical tests were performed in 6th, 12th, 18th, 24th months and in the last visit. The relationship between the ophthalmologic findings, and the radiation doses below and above the cut-off values was evaluated. Results Contrast sensitivity decrease and visual field deterioration were observed in 42% of the patients in the last visit (median 26 months) whereas a prolonged latency and decreased amplitude of P100 wave in VEP was observed in 58% and 33% of the eyes, respectively at 24th month. Totally 16 patients (84.2%) developed dry eye disease and eight of them received radiotherapy below tolerance doses and had mild to moderate dry eye findings. Radiation-induced retinopathy was observed in three of the eyes in eight patients who received radiation above tolerance dose. Conclusion Head and neck cancers treated with radiotherapy, resulted in various ophthalmic complications. All patients who are treating with radiotherapy should be evaluated by an ophthalmologist in terms of anterior and posterior segment damage, even if the radiation dose is below the tolerance limit. Severe lupin bean intoxication: an anticholinergic toxidrome

        Pinar Yazici Ozkaya,Hatice Feray Ari,Ese Eda Turanli,Gulizar Koc,Bulent Karapinar 대한소아응급의학회 2021 대한소아응급의학회지 Vol.8 No.2

Lupin beans are the yellow legume seeds of the genus Lupinus. They are traditionally eaten as a pickled snack in many countries. Bitter lupin beans have a high amount of alkaloids called lupanine. Because the alkaloid is responsible for anticholinergic toxidrome, the beans should pass a debittering process before consumption. Only few pediatric cases of lupin bean intoxication were reported. We present a 12-year-old boy who visited the emergency department for the unexpected onset of anticholinergic toxidrome.

      • Effects of Intraperitoneally Administered Lipoic Acid, Vitamin E, and Linalool on the Level of Total Lipid and Fatty Acids in Guinea Pig Brain with Oxidative Stress Induced by H2O2

Celik, Sait,Ozkaya, Ahmet 생화학분자생물학회 2002 Journal of biochemistry and molecular biology Vol.35 No.6

The aim of our study was to investigate the protective effects of intraperitoneally-administrated vitamin E, dl-alpha lipoic acid, and linalool on the level of total lipid and fatty acid in guinea pig brains with oxidative stress that was induced by $H_2O_2$. The total brain lipid content in the $H_2O_2$ group decreased when compared to the $H_2O_2$ + vitamin E (p<0.05), $H_2O_2$ + linalool (p<0.05), ALA (p<0.05), control (p<0.01), linalool (p<0.01), and vitamin E (p<0.01) groups. While the proportion of total saturated fatty acid (${\Sigma}SFA$) in the $H_2O_2$ group significantly increased (p<0.005) when compared to the vitamin E group, it only slightly increased (p<0.01) when compared to the control and $H_2O_2$ + vitamin E groups. The ratio of the total unsaturated fatty acid (${\Sigma}USFA$) in the $H_2O_2$ groups was lower (p<0.05) than the control, vitamin E, and $H_2O_2$ + vitamin E groups. The level of the total polyunsaturated fatty acid (${\Sigma}PUEA$) in the $H_2O_2$ group decreased in when compared to the control, vitamin E, and $H_2O_2$ + vitamin E groups. While the proportion of the total w3 (omega 3), w6 (omega 6), and PUFA were found to be lowest in the $H_2O_2$ group, they were slightly increased (p<0.05) in the lipoic acid group when compared to the control and $H_2O_2$ + lipoic acid groups. However, the level of ${\Sigma}SFA$ in the $H_2O_2$ group was highest; the level of ${\Sigma}USFA$ in same group was lowest. As the proportion of ${\Sigma}USFA$ and ${\Sigma}PUFA$ were found to be highest in the linalool group, they were decreased in the $H_2O_2$ group when compared to the control group. Our results show that linalool has antioxidant properties, much the same as vitamin E and lipoic acid, to prevent lipid peroxidation. Additionally, vitamin E, lipoic acid, and linalool could lead to therapeutic approaches for limiting damage from oxidation reaction in unsaturated fatty acids, as well as for complementing existing therapy for the treatment of complications of oxidative damage.

Vibrations of an axially accelerating, multiple supported flexible beam

        Kural, S.,Ozkaya, E. Techno-Press 2012 Structural Engineering and Mechanics, An Int'l Jou Vol.44 No.4

In this study, the transverse vibrations of an axially moving flexible beams resting on multiple supports are investigated. The time-dependent velocity is assumed to vary harmonically about a constant mean velocity. Simple-simple, fixed-fixed, simple-simple-simple and fixed-simple-fixed boundary conditions are considered. The equation of motion becomes independent from geometry and material properties and boundary conditions, since equation is expressed in terms of dimensionless quantities. Then the equation is obtained by assuming small flexural rigidity. For this case, the fourth order spatial derivative multiplies a small parameter; the mathematical model converts to a boundary layer type of problem. Perturbation techniques (The Method of Multiple Scales and The Method of Matched Asymptotic Expansions) are applied to the equation of motion to obtain approximate analytical solutions. Outer expansion solution is obtained by using MMS (The Method of Multiple Scales) and it is observed that this solution does not satisfy the boundary conditions for moment and incline. In order to eliminate this problem, inner solutions are obtained by employing a second expansion near the both ends of the flexible beam. Then the outer and the inner expansion solutions are combined to obtain composite solution which approximately satisfying all the boundary conditions. Effects of axial speed and flexural rigidity on first and second natural frequency of system are investigated. And obtained results are compared with older studies.

Effect of etoricoxib on experimental oxidative testicular ischemia-reperfusion damage in rats induced with torsion-detorsion

Yapanoglu, Turgut,Ozkaya, Fatih,Yilmaz, Ali Haydar,Mammadov, Renad,Cimen, Ferda Keskin,Hirik, Erkan,Altuner, Durdu The Korean Society of Pharmacology 2017 The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology Vol.21 No.5

Etoricoxib features antioxidant and anti-inflammatory properties concomitantly, suggesting that it may be beneficial in testicular ischemia reperfusion (I/R) damage. Our aim is to investigate the effects of etoricoxib on testicular I/R damage induced with torsion-detorsion (TD). The etoricoxib + torsion-detorsion (ETD) groups of animals were given etoricoxib in 50 and 100 mg/kg of body weight (ETD-50 and ETD-100), while the testes torsion-detorsion (TTD) and sham operation rat group (SOG) animals were given single oral doses of distilled water as a solvent. TTD, ETD-50 and ETD-100 groups were subjected to $720^{\circ}$ degrees torsion for four hours, and detorsion for four hours. The SOG group was not subjected to this procedure. Biochemical, gene expression and histopathological analyses were carried out on the testicular tissues. The levels of malondialdehyde (MDA), myeloperoxidase (MPO), interleukin-1 beta ($IL-1{\beta}$) and tumor necrosis factor alpha ($TNF-{\alpha}$) were significantly higher, and the levels of total glutathione (tGSH) and glutathione reductase (GSHRd) were significantly lower in the TTD group, compared to the ETD-50, ETD-100 and SOG groups. Etoricoxib at a dose of 100 mg/kg better prevented I/R damage than the 50 mg/kg dose. Etoricoxib may be useful in clinical practice in the reduction of I/R damage on testes caused by torsion-detorsion.
