        ON THE LAST DIGIT AND THE LAST NON-ZERO DIGIT OF n<sup>n</sup> IN BASE b

        In this paper we study the sequences defined by the last and the last non-zero digits of $n^n$ in base b. For the sequence given by the last digits of $n^n$ in base b, we prove its periodicity using different techniques than those used by W. Sierpinski and R. Hampel. In the case of the sequence given by the last non-zero digits of $n^n$ in base b (which had been studied only for b = 10) we show the non-periodicity of the sequence when b is an odd prime power and when it is even and square-free. We also show that if $b=2^2{^s}$ the sequence is periodic and conjecture that this is the only such case.

        한국 영아의 초기 원시발성 산출과 발성 발달

        배경 및 목적: 영아의 원시발성(protophones) 발달은 말-언어발달의 중요한 기초가 된다. 원시발성 중에서도 발성 조절(phonatory control) 발달과 연관되는 중성(vocant), 고성(squeal), 탁성(growl)의 발달은 조음 및 발성 발달에 중요한 선결과제이다. 더욱이 원시발성이 신생아 시기에도 산출되는지를 조사하는 것은 말-언어발달 연구 및 임상을 위해 중요한 의의를 갖는다. 본 연구의 목적은 (1) 원시발성의 신생아 시기 산출 여부, (2) 생후 일년 동안의 원시발성과 울음의 산출량 및 발달, (3) 원시발성 유형의 월령별 발달 추이를 조사하는 데 있다. 더불어 원시발성의 자발성을 알아보기 위하여 양육자의 언어 자극이 없는 상황에서 원시발성의 산출 비율을 조사하였다. 방법: 일반 영아 16명을 대상으로 LENA (Language ENvironment Analysis system) 녹음기를 이용하여 종단 연구의 일환으로 발성 자료를 수집하였다. 영아 생후 일년 동안의 원시발성 발달 양상을 알아보기 위하여 각 발성 유형을 청지각적 기준에 따라 분류하고 평균 산출량 및 분당 평균 산출량을 분석하였다. 통계 분석을 위하여 Generalized Estimating Equations (GEE), t-test와 ANOVA가 사용되었다. 결과: 연구 결과, 신생아 시기에도 울음이 아니라, 원시발성이 현저히 산출 비율이 높았으며, 양육자의 언어 자극이 없는 환경에서도 원시발성이 자발적으로 산출되었다. 논의 및 결론: 신생아 시기의 자발적인 원시발성의 조기 출현과 말-언어발달과의 연관성에 대해 논의하였다.

        Time Dependent Particle Emission From Fission Products

        Decay heating following nuclear fission is an important factor in the design of nuclear facilities; impacting a variety of aspects ranging from cooling requirements to shielding design. Calculations of decay heat, often assumed to be a simple product of activity and average decay product energy, are complicated by the so called ``pandemonium effect.'' Elucidated in the 1970?셲 this complication arises from beta-decays feeding high-energy nuclear levels; redistributing the available energy between betas and gammas. Increased interest in improving the theoretical predictions of decay probabilities has been, in part, motivated by the recent experimental effort utilizing the Total Absorption Gamma-ray Spectrometer (TAGS) to determine individual beta-decay transition probabilities to individual nuclear levels. Accurate predictions of decay heating require a detailed understanding of these transition probabilities, accurate representation of particle decays as well as reliable predictions of temporal inventories from fissioning systems. We will discuss a recent LANL effort to provide a time dependent study of particle emission from fission products through a combination of Quasiparticle Random Phase Approximation (QRPA) predictions of beta-decay probabilities, statistical Hauser-Feshbach techniques to obtain particle and gamma-ray emissions in statistical Hauser-Feshbach and the nuclear inventory code, CINDER.

      • A FE<sup>2</sup> multi-scale implementation for modeling composite materials on distributed architectures

        This work investigates the accuracy and performance of a $FE^2$ multi-scale implementation used to predict the behavior of composite materials. The equations are formulated assuming the small deformations solid mechanics approach in non-linear material models with hardening plasticity. The uniform strain boundary conditions are applied for the macro-to-micro transitions. A parallel algorithm was implemented in order to solve large engineering problems. The scheme proposed takes advantage of the domain decomposition method at the macro-scale and the coupling between each subdomain with a micro-scale model. The precision of the method is validated with a composite material problem and scalability tests are performed for showing the efficiency.

        <P>P2Y(1) purinergic receptors (P2Y(1)Rs) mediate rises in intracellular Ca(2+) in response to ATP, but the duration and characteristics of this Ca(2+) response are known to vary markedly in distinct cell types. We screened the P2Y(1)R carboxyl terminus against a recently created proteomic array of PDZ (PSD-95/Drosophila Discs large/ZO-1 homology) domains and identified a previously unrecognized, specific interaction with the second PDZ domain of the scaffold NHERF-2 (Na(+)/H(+) exchanger regulatory factor type 2). Furthermore, we found that P2Y(1)R and NHERF-2 associate in cells, allowing NHERF-2-mediated tethering of P2Y(1)R to key downstream effectors such as phospholipase Cbeta. Finally, we found that coexpression of P2Y(1)R with NHERF-2 in glial cells prolongs P2Y(1)R-mediated Ca(2+) signaling, whereas disruption of the P2Y(1)R-NHERF-2 interaction by point mutations attenuates the duration of P2Y(1)R-mediated Ca(2+) responses. These findings reveal that NHERF-2 is a key regulator of the cellular activity of P2Y(1)R and may therefore determine cell-specific differences in P2Y(1)R-mediated signaling.</P>

        Characterization of the Phenol Monooxygenase Gene from Chromobacterium violaceum: Potential Use for Phenol Biodegradation

        In this work, the biodegradation mechanism of phenol and sub products (such as catechol and hydroquinone) in Chromobacterium coli was investigated by cloning and molecular characterization of a phenol monooxygenase gene in Escherichia coli. This gene (Cvmp) is very similar (74 and 59% of similarity and identity, respectively) to the ortholog from Ralstomia eutropha, bacteria capable of utilizing phenol as the sole carbon source. The phenol biodegradation ability of E.coli recombinant strains was tested by cell-growth in a minimal medium containing phenol as the sole source of carbon and release of intermediary metabolites (catechol and hydroquinone). Interestingly, during the growth of these strains on phenol, catechol, and hydroquinone accumulated transiently in the medium. These metabolites were further analyzed by HPLC. These results indicated that phenol can be initially orto or para hydroxylated to produce cathecol or hydroquinone, respectively, followed by meta-cleavage of aromatic rings.
