Effects of lemongrass oil (LO) droplet size in the LO/chitosan emulsion on the emulsion's coating effectiveness in improving microbiological safety and preserving grape berries (Vitis vinifera L. x V. labruscana Bailey) were investigated. LO was homogenized with a chitosan solution (1 g/100 g) and Tween 20 (0.25 g/100 g) by high shear mixing (HSM; 10,000 rpm, 1 min) or dynamic high pressure processing (DHP; 103-172 MPa, 1-3 passes), forming LO coating emulsions. The particle sizes of the HSM and DHP emulsions were 461.9-632.6 nm and 204.2-378.8 nm, respectively. DHP emulsions were more stable than HSM emulsions. Compared with the HSM emulsion, the DHP emulsion coating resulted in higher initial inhibition of Salmonella typhimurium; greater growth inhibition of total mesophilic aerobes, yeasts, and molds; and retention of color, total soluble solid content, and antioxidant activity during storage at 25 degrees C (P < 0.05). The sensory results suggest that the DHP emulsion minimized differences in sensory attributes compared with uncoated grape berries more effectively than did the HSM emulsion coating. The nanoemulsion coating with smaller LO droplets demonstrated greater efficiency in increasing microbial safety against Salmonella and preserving grape berries, compared with the coating with larger droplets.
This study investigated the effects of cold plasma treatment (CPT) using various plasma-forming gases on the physical properties of defatted soybean meal (DSM)-based edible film (DSM film). The effect of packaging smoked salmon using a cold plasma (CP)-treated DSM film on the storage stability of salmon was also evaluated. DSM film was formed by casting film-forming solutions (DSM/glycerol at a ratio of 10: 3) prepared by high-pressure (172 MPa) homogenization. Among the O-2-, N-2-, air-, He- and Ar-CPTs, Ar-CPT, which increased elongation and lightness of the DSM film, was optimized against tensile strength, elongation, and water vapor permeability using a response surface analysis. Optimal plasma generation time and power were predicted as 15 min and 400 W, respectively. The tensile strength, elongation, and moisture barrier property of DSM film increased by 6.8%, 13.4%, and 24.4%, respectively, after CPT at optimal conditions. The CPT formed DSM film that decomposed easily and retarded lipid oxidation and hardness reduction of smoked salmon during storage at 4 degrees C. The results from this study suggest the use of CPT for improving the applicability of DSM film in food packaging. (C) 2016 Elsevier Ltd. All rights reserved.

In a national project that began in 2007, Tokyo Electric Power Company (TEPCO), Sumitomo Electric Industries (SEI) and Mayekawa Mfg. Corporation (MYCOM) aim to operate a 66 kV, 200 MVA HTS cable system in a power grid to demonstrate its reliability and stable operation. In order to verify the validity of the cable design, a 30 m HTS cable system was constructed and subjected to various tests. After the confirmation of the nominal current and voltage performance, a long-term operation test was performed to verify whether the HTS cable system is capable of handling the rated current and voltage for thirty years. A 250 m cable was manufactured for the in-grid demonstration, and shipping tests were successful. The cable system construction was completed at the Asahi substation (Yokohama, Kanagawa), and the in-grid demonstration will start in 2012.

Although several cases of a dumbbell tumor of thoracic nerve roots have been reported, reports on the surgical procedures for a dumbbell tumor of the first thoracic (T1) nerve root are rare. Surgeons should be cautious, especially when performing a surgical procedure for a dumbbell tumor of the T1 nerve root because the tumor is anatomically located adjacent to important organs and because the T1 nerve root composes the lower trunk of the brachial plexus with the eighth cervical nerve root. We present cases with dumbbell tumors of the T1 nerve root that were treated with combined surgical treatment to remove the tumor. We first performed videoassisted thoracic surgery (VATS) to release the organs anteriorly and then performed posterior spinal surgery in the prone position. The combined VATS and posterior spinal surgery may become a standard surgical procedure for the treatment of dumbbell tumors of the T1 nerve root.

The field of recycling for waste electronic components, which is the typical example of an urban mine, requires the development of useful sorting techniques. In this study, a sorter based on image identification by deep learning was developed to select electronic components into four groups. They were recovered from waste printed circuit boards and should be separated to depend on the difference after treatment. The sorter consists of a workstation with GPU, camera, belt conveyor, air compressor. A small piece (less than 3.5 cm) of electronic components on the belt conveyor (belt speed: 6 cm/s) was taken and learned as teaching data. The accuracy of the image identification was 96% as kinds and 99% as groups. The optimum condition of sorting was determined by evaluating accuracies of image identification and recovery rates by blowdown when changing the operating condition such as belt speed and blowdown time of compressed air. Under the optimum condition, the accuracy of image classification in groups was 98.7%. The sorting rate was more than 70%.
