Evaluation of High Power Light Emitting Diodes (HPLEDs) as Potential Attractants for Adult Spodoptera exigua (Hubner) (Lepidoptera Noctuidae)

( Min Seok Oh ),( Chi Hoon Lee ),( Sang Guei Lee ),( Hoi Seon Lee ) 한국응용생명화학회 2011 Applied Biological Chemistry (Appl Biol Chem) Vol.54 No.3

To evaluate high-power light-emitting diodes (HPLEDs) as potential attractants for Spodoptera exigua adults, attractiveness of specific wavelengths, illuminance intensity, and light-exposure times were investigated and compared to that of fluorescent light. The white light (40 lux treatment) attracted significantly more S. exigua than other attractants. The optimal light-exposure time, based on the highest attraction rate, was 60 min. Evaluation of attraction and repellent rates under optimal conditions showed the white HPLED had the highest attraction rate (91.1%), and the red HPLED had the highest repellence rate (33.3%). Based on relative efficiency values, the white HPLED was about 9.14 times as efficient as the fluorescent light. These data clearly showed that S. exigua showed the greatest attraction to the white HPLED at 40 lux intensity and 60 min light-exposure time.

      • Evaluation of High Power Light Emitting Diodes (HPLEDs) as Potential Attractants for Adult Spodoptera exigua (Hübner)

        Min-Seok Oh,Sang-Guei Lee,Ju-Hyun Jeon,Hoi-Seon Lee 한국응용곤충학회 2010 한국응용곤충학회 학술대회논문집 Vol.2010 No.10

To response evaluation of high power light emitting diodes (HPLEDs) as potential attractants to the Spodoptera exigua adults, we investigated the attractiveness of specific wavelength, illuminance intensity and light-exposure time, and compared them to the fluorescent. The all light treatments with the 40 lux intensity attracted the significantly highest number of S. exigua. The optimal light-exposure time exhibited the highest attraction rate at the 60 min. When the attraction and repellent rate in the optimal conditions to the S. exigua was surveyed, the white HPLED exhibited the highest attraction rate (91.1%), whereas the red HPLED exhibited the most repellent rate (33.3%). When evatuated of illuminance efficiency with fluorescent as control, white and red HPLED were found to be 9.14 and 10.34 times more efficient than fluorescent. These data clearly show that both the 40 lux intensity and the 60 min light-exposure time by using the white HPLED was the most suitable for attraction of the S. exigua.

Effects of Industrial By-products on Reducing Heavy Metal Leaching in Contaminated Paddy Soil

        Oh, Se Jin,Oh, Seung Min,Kim, Sung Chul,Ok, Yong Sik,Ko, Tae Yol,Ji, Won Hyun,Yang, Jae E. 한국토양비료학회 2015 한국토양비료학회지 Vol.48 No.1

Soil contamination with arsenic and heavy metals is a worldwide problem. Main objective of this research was to evaluated effects of reducing heavy metal leaching under reduced soil condition amended with industrial by-products. The contaminated soil was amended with 3% (w/w) of limestone (Ls), steel slag (SS) and acid mine drainage sludge (AMDS). Synthetic acid rain ($H_2SO_4:HNO_3=6:4$, pH 5.5 fixed) was used for feeding solution with flow rate of $0.78{\sim}0.88mL\;min^{-1}$. Results showed that similar pH and EC of leachate was observed in all treatments regardless of applied industrial by-products. However, arsenic concentration of leachate increased when industrial by-products were mixed. Meanwhile, concentration of heavy metal in the leachate decreased from 11.3 to 4.59 mg for Cd, from 92.3 to 7.93 mg for Pb, and from 11,716 to 1,788 mg for Zn via immobilization in soil with AMDS amended, respectively. Overall, application of industrial by-products can be an environmentally-friendly way to remediate soil and(or) leachate contaminated with metal(loid)s in metal mine site.

      • Bending Performance of Flexible Organic Thin-Film Transistors With/Without Encapsulation Layer

        Oh, Jongsu,Kim, Jin-Ho,Lee, So Young,Kim, Min Su,Kim, Jae Moon,Park, Keechan,Kim, Yong-Sang IEEE 2018 IEEE transactions on device and materials reliabil Vol.18 No.1

<P>Flexible pentacene-based organic thin-film transistors (TFTs) were fabricated and their performance was investigated as a function of the bending radius and the thickness of the polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) encapsulation layer. The TFTs were fabricated on a flexible polyimide film (film thickness: 75 <TEX>$\mu \text{m}$</TEX>), and encapsulated by a PDMS layer. Degradation of the device performance during application of a tensile bending stress of 3 mm was minimized by utilizing an encapsulation layer thickness of 75 <TEX>$\mu \text{m}$</TEX>, because the mechanical strain on the pentacene layer was almost off-set (tensile strain was applied to the bottom layer of the pentacene, and compressive strain was applied to the top layer of pentacene). At the tensile bending stress of 3 mm, the performance of the non-encapsulated TFT was degraded, whereas the encapsulated device showed great stability. This flexibility and bending stability were enabled by the use of the 75- <TEX>$\mu \text{m}$</TEX> PDMS encapsulation layer, due to the location of the pentacene active layer in the neutral region position. A mechanical reliability test was performed for 120 min with a bending radius of 3 mm, demonstrating that only the device with the 75- <TEX>$\mu \text{m}$</TEX> thick encapsulation layer showed stable device performance over a stress time of 120 min.</P>

      • A STUDY ON THE EXPLOSION SAFETY ASSESSMENT OF HYDROCARBON REFRIGERANT REFRIGERATOR

Oh,Kyu-Hyung,Kim,Min-Kyu,Chu,Euy-Sung,Lim,Byung-Han,Kim,Man-Hoe,Park,Yoon-Ser 한국화재소방학회 1997 한국화재소방학회 학술대회 논문집 Vol.1997 No.-

This paper discribes an experimental explosion risk assessment study on refrigerators containing flammable hydrocarbon refrigerant. A refrigerator used in this study is a larder fridge type, 215 liter in volume. The hydrocarbon refrigerant used in the refrigerator is iso-butane(C<TEX>$_4$</TEX>H<TEX>$_{10}$</TEX>). For the explosion safety assessment of the refrigerator, temperature of compressor, cooling air circulation fan motor, defrost heater and inner lamp were measured during the operation. And to confirm the ignitablity of flammable gas by the electric spark of the switches of the refrigerator, ON-OFF test of all switches were conducted with compulsorily near the stoichiometric concentration atmosphere of iso-butane-air mixture. As the result of experiment above mentioned and another experiment for the explosion safety assessment, we can conclude that explosion hazard in connection with the use of hydrocarbon refrigerant was few.w.

      • Dry etching of polydimethylsiloxane using microwave plasma

        Hwang, Sung Jin,Oh, Dong Joon,Jung, Phill Gu,Lee, Sang Min,Go, Jeung Sang,Kim, Joon-Ho,Hwang, Kyu-Youn,Ko, Jong Soo IOP 2009 JOURNAL OF MICROMECHANICS AND MICROENGINEERING - Vol.19 No.9

<P>This paper presents a new polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) dry-etching method that uses microwave plasma. The applicability of the method for fabricating microstructures and removing residual PDMS is also verified. The etch rate of PDMS was dominantly influenced by the gas flux ratio of CF4/O2 and the microwave power. While the PDMS etch rate increased as the flux ratio of CF4 was increased, the etch rate decreased as the flux ratio of O2 was increased. The maximum etch rate of 4.31 µm min−1 was achieved when mixing oxygen (O2) and tetrafluoromethane (CF4) at a 1:2 ratio at 800 W power. The PDMS etch rate almost linearly increased with the microwave power. The ratio of the vertical etch rate to the lateral etch rate was in a range of 1.14–1.64 and varied with the gas fluxes. In consideration of potential applications of the proposed PDMS etching method, array-type PDMS microwells and network-type microprotrusion structures were fabricated. The contact angle was dramatically increased from 104° (non-etched PDMS surface) to 148° (etched PDMS surface) and the surface was thereby modified to be superhydrophobic. In addition, a thin PDMS skin that blocked holes and PDMS residues affixed in nickel microstructures was successively removed.</P>

      • Layer-controlled thinning of black phosphorus by an Ar ion beam

        Park, Jin Woo,Jang, Sung Kyu,Kang, Dong Ho,Kim, Doo San,Jeon, Min Hwan,Lee, Won Oh,Kim, Ki Seok,Lee, Sung Joo,Park, Jin-Hong,Kim, Kyong Nam,Yeom, Geun Young Royal Society of Chemistry 2017 Journal of Materials Chemistry C Vol.5 No.41

<▼1><P>BP thinning was carried out using a monoenergetic Ar+ ion beam and the BP could be thinned without damaging the surface.</P></▼1><▼2><P>Black phosphorus (BP) is one of the most interesting two-dimensional (2D) layered materials due to its unique properties, including a band gap energy change from 0.3 eV (bulk) to 2.0 eV (monolayer) depending on the number of BP layers, for application in nanoelectronic devices. In general, 2D layered materials including BP have limitations in terms of synthesis due to the process factors such as time, temperature, <I>etc.</I>, and thus, a thinning technique from the bulk material to a 2D material needs to be used while controlling the removed layer thickness. In this study, layer-controlled thinning of BP was performed by using a controlled Ar+ ion beam method and the BP thinning characteristics were investigated. By using the near monoenergetic ion energy in the range of 45–48 eV, BP could be thinned with the thinning rate of ∼0.55 nm min−1 down to bilayer BP without increasing the surface roughness and without changing the chemical binding states. The BP oxide on the pristine BP could also be successfully removed using the same Ar+ ion beam. 2D BP field-effect transistors (FETs) fabricated with the thinned bilayer–10-layer BPs exhibited electrical characteristics similar to those of pristine BP FETs suggesting no electrical damage on the BP layers thinned by the controlled monoenergetic Ar+ ion beam.</P></▼2>

Pulse Oximetry and Skin Temperature Gradient as Diagnostic Tools of Successful Caudal Block

Duk Kyung Kim,Kyoung Min Lee,Won Kyoung Kwon,Chung Sik Oh,Sung Whan Jang 대한마취과학회 2007 Korean Journal of Anesthesiology Vol.53 No.6

Background: Though caudal block is a relative simple technique, it has not been widely used in adults because of a high failure rate. We assumed that any tests to quantify the changes of sympathetic tone in the affected areas would be excellent indicators of successful block. We tested the usefulness of two candidates (pulse oximetry plethysmographic waveform amplitude measured at 5th toe and calf minus 5th toe skin temperature gradient) as indicators of successful caudal block. Methods: In 45 adult patients undergoing anal surgery with caudal block, these two variables were simultaneously measured at 2-min intervals for 20 min. A two-fold increase in the plethysmographic waveform amplitude from baseline and skin temperature gradient of 0°C were predefined as test criteria of successful block. Results: While the sensitivity, specificity, positive predictive value, and negative predictive value of the skin temperature gradient test were 45.9%, 100%, 100%, and 9.1%, those of the plethysmographic waveform test were 86.5%, 100%, 100%, and 28.6%. The plethysmographic waveform test showed a significantly higher discriminative capacity than the skin temperature gradient test (94.9% vs. 48.7%, P < 0.05) Conclusions: Unlike the skin temperature gradient test, the plethysmographic waveform test showed a considerably high validity in detecting successful block. Considering its simple and real time monitoring potentials together with a high failure rate of caudal block in adults, we cautiously recommend it as a supplemental diagnostic tool to predict successful block, especially when verbal communication with patient is difficult.
