      • Low temperature hydrogen production by ethanol steam reforming over Pt-supported catalysts assisted by electric field

        Catalytic ethanol steam reforming was investigated over Pt/CeO2 catalyst in an electric field at low temperature, and the effect of the electric field and controlling factors for the activity and selectivity were examined. With imposing the electric field, ethanol steam reforming proceeded at low temperature as 423K, at which temperature a conventional catalytic reaction hardly proceeded. Moreover, in the reaction with electric field, CH3CHO selectivity was low and CO+CO2 selectivity was higher than that in the conventional catalytic reaction, which indicated that steam reforming of acetaldehyde was promoted by imposing the electric field. The supported platinum worked as an active site and has great impact on the activity and selectivity for the ethanol steam reforming in the electric field. Conversion of ethanol and H2 yield drastically increased with imposing the electric field, and apparent activation energies for three elementary reactions (ethanol dehydrogenation, acetaldehyde decomposition, and acetaldehyde steam reforming) were lowered by the electric field. In-situ DRIFTS measurements revealed that the adsorbed ethanol forms reactive acetate species by imposing the electric field even at low temperature, which improved hydrogen selectivity. This process can produce hydrogen from bio-ethanol using less energy at low temperature, such as 423K with a high efficiency.

        Influence Of Ectomycorrhizal Colonization On Cesium Uptake By Pinus densiflora Seedlings

        Radionuclides were deposited at forest areas in eastern parts of Japan following the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant incident in March 2011. Ectomycorrhizal (EM) fungi have important effects on radiocaesium dynamics in forest ecosystems. We examined the effect of colonization by the EM fungus Astraeus hygrometricus on the uptake of cesium (Cs) and potassium (K) by Pinus densiflora seedlings. Pine seedlings exhibited enhanced growth after the EM formation due to the colonization by A. hygrometricus. Additionally, the shoot Cs concentration increased after the EM formation when Cs was not added to the medium. This suggests that A. hygrometricus might be able to solubilize Cs fixed to soil particles. Moreover, the shoot K concentration increased significantly after the EM formation when Cs was added. However, there were no significant differences in the root K concentration between EM and non-EM seedlings. These results suggest that different mechanisms control the transfer of Cs and K from the root to the shoot of pine seedlings.

        Ureido‐Pyridazinone Derivatives: Insights into the Structural and Conformational Properties for STAT3 Inhibition

        <P><B>Abstract</B></P><P>Three new ureido‐pyridazinone derivatives, which are structurally related to the known STAT3 inhibitor <B>AVS‐0288</B>, were designed by taking into account the structure–activity relationships determined for several ureido‐oxadiazole derivatives previously studied by our group. Their synthesis was first attempted through suitable 5‐aminopyridazinone intermediates (<B>6a</B> and <B>6b</B>), which molecular structures were confirmed by means of X‐ray diffraction data on <B>6a</B>. Amine functionalization was unsuccessful, therefore, an alternative method was devised. Dual‐luciferase and AlphaScreen‐based assays were used to test their activity. The obtained data were rationalized on the basis of a modeling study, which focused our attention on the geometrical preferences of the ureido moiety. Computational results seem to indicate that both the 1,2,5‐oxadiazole ring and the extended <I>ZZ</I> arrangement are essential and probably act in a synergistic way to confer significant activity against STAT3.</P>

      • Effect of fermentation process on hygiene and perceived quality of lait caillé, an ethnic milk product from Burkina Faso

        Lait caillé is a traditional fermented milk product in Burkina Faso. The objective of this study was to contribute to consumer acceptance of lait caillé . For this purpose, the production practices in rural and urban areas were identified through semi-structured interviews, while the perceived quality of lait caillé in urban area was investigated through a survey. Then, microbiological and physico-chemical parameters were analysed on samples from rural and urban sites. Finally, an attempt to improve the hygiene of the traditional processing was proposed by use of Lactococcus lactis and Leuconostoc mesenteroides stains as starter. These were previously isolated from traditional lait caillé . The results on the manufacturing processes revealed from the raw milk practices of spontaneous fermentation, backslopping and contact with bacterial biofilms attached to container. The survey on perceived quality indicated that traditional lait caillé possessed a niche market which could be enlarged by implementation of good manufacturing practices in the production sites. The microbiota of the end product was characterised by high loads of Enterococcus spp., Enterobacteria and Pichia spp. Fermented milks by starter cultures showed improved hygienic quality and a positive sensory appreciation. However, the use of selected strains might be followed by loss of some features of traditional lait caillé , which scientists should work to resolve.
