글로벌 기업 영어 콘텐츠를 활용한 대학 영어 교육 사례연구

        김나희(Nahee Kim) 한국영어학회 2023 영어학 Vol.23 No.-

This research aims to design and conduct a case study of application of a global corporation’s English progrmme to college English presentation classes. It also explores how a global corporation’s English curriculum is implemented inside the university language programme. In order to do that, this study adopted Shin et al.’s(2018) storytelling-based curriculum, Kim’s (2019) action research on a global corporation’s English storytelling programme, and Shin and Kim’s (2019) principles of curriculum-based dynamic assessment. Thirty-two students were joined in the research and taught by the researcher during the autumn semester of 2020 language course. This course consisted of three procedures: pre-test, intervention and post-test. According to participants’ various reactions to classroom activities, each lesson was revised and conducted, including the researcher’s reflections on the curriculum and learners’ feedback on teaching. As a result of post-test, learners’ presentation performance was improved in terms of verbal/non-verbal presentation skills and English speaking confidence, compared to the pre-test result. It was found that the use of a global corporation’s English curriculum may be effective in learner-centered teaching and learning. It is suggested that there is a need for investigating more teachable, assessable and manageable procedures and guidelines to apply to university English courses.

Korean Test Takers" TOEIC-Speaking and OPIc Test Preparation

Nahee Kim 한국응용언어학회 2016 응용 언어학 Vol.32 No.3

High stakes English speaking tests have been used for evaluating applicants’ language proficiency in academic contexts or in the work place. In these situations, most Korean college students prepare for tests such as TOEIC Speaking or OPIc test in order to get better jobs. Although high-stakes tests pressure students and teachers to raise scores, there is little research about how test takers prepare for English speaking tests in cram schools. One aim of this study was to examine and compare TOEIC Speaking and OPIc test preparation activities in a cram school. Also, I aimed to investigate why and how test takers choose test preparation, the characteristics of test preparation, and how they are influenced by test preparation from the test-takers’ perspectives. Various types of data were collected through observation, interview and documentation. The results indicated that activities in the cram school mode were not significantly influenced by test type. Thus, test takers’ activities may be influenced by teacher’s instruction. The study raises awareness of the importance of instruction by a teacher for appropriate test preparation, and its impact on a test taker in the field of language teaching and testing.

Prediction of itching diagnostic marker through RNA sequencing of contact hypersensitivity and skin scratching stimulation mice models

        Kim, Young-Won,Zhou, Tong,Ko, Eun-A,Kim, Seongtae,Lee, Donghee,Seo, Yelim,Kwon, Nahee,Choi, Taeyeon,Lim, Heejung,Cho, Sungvin,Bae, Gwanhui,Hwang, Yuseong,Kim, Dojin,Park, Hyewon,Lee, Minjae,Jang, Eunk The Korean Society of Pharmacology 2019 The Korean Journal of Physiology & Pharmacology Vol.23 No.2

Pruritus (itching) is classically defined as an unpleasant cutaneous sensation that leads to scratching behavior. Although the scientific criteria of classification for pruritic diseases are not clear, it can be divided as acute or chronic by duration of symptoms. In this study, we investigated whether skin injury caused by chemical (contact hypersensitivity, CHS) or physical (skin-scratching stimulation, SSS) stimuli causes initial pruritus and analyzed gene expression profiles systemically to determine how changes in skin gene expression in the affected area are related to itching. In both CHS and SSS, we ranked the Gene Ontology Biological Process terms that are generally associated with changes. The factors associated with upregulation were keratinization, inflammatory response and neutrophil chemotaxis. The Kyoto Encyclopedia of Genes and Genomes pathway shows the difference of immune system, cell growth and death, signaling molecules and interactions, and signal transduction pathways. Il1a, Il1b and Il22 were upregulated in the CHS, and Tnf, Tnfrsf1b, Il1b, Il1r1 and Il6 were upregulated in the SSS. Trpc1 channel genes were observed in representative itching-related candidate genes. By comparing and analyzing RNA-sequencing data obtained from the skin tissue of each animal model in these characteristic stages, it is possible to find useful diagnostic markers for the treatment of itching, to diagnose itching causes and to apply customized treatment.

Caveolin-1 mediates the utilization of extracellular proteins for survival in refractory gastric cancer

        Hwang Nahee,Yoon Bo Kyung,Chun Kyu-Hye,Kim Hyeonhui,Lee Yoseob,Kim Jae-Won,Jeon Hyeonuk,Kim Tae-Hyun,Kim Mi-Young,Fang Sungsoon,Cheong Jae-Ho,Kim Jae-woo 생화학분자생물학회 2023 Experimental and molecular medicine Vol.55 No.-

Despite advances in cancer therapy, the clinical outcome of patients with gastric cancer remains poor, largely due to tumor heterogeneity. Thus, finding a hidden vulnerability of clinically refractory subtypes of gastric cancer is crucial. Here, we report that chemoresistant gastric cancer cells rely heavily on endocytosis, facilitated by caveolin-1, for survival. caveolin-1 was highly upregulated in the most malignant stem-like/EMT/mesenchymal (SEM)-type gastric cancer cells, allowing caveolin-1-mediated endocytosis and utilization of extracellular proteins via lysosomal degradation. Downregulation of caveolin-1 alone was sufficient to induce cell death in SEM-type gastric cancer cells, emphasizing its importance as a survival mechanism. Consistently, chloroquine, a lysosomal inhibitor, successfully blocked caveolin-1-mediated endocytosis, leading to the marked suppression of tumor growth in chemorefractory gastric cancer cells in vitro, including patient-derived organoids, and in vivo. Together, our findings suggest that caveolin-1-mediated endocytosis is a key metabolic pathway for gastric cancer survival and a potential therapeutic target.

글로벌 기업의 영어 스토리텔링 교육에서 역동적 평가 활용 : 학습자 내러티브 정체성 중심으로

        김나희(Kim Nahee) 학습자중심교과교육학회 2020 학습자중심교과교육연구 Vol.20 No.5

This study aims to explore dynamic assessment of a global corporation’s English storytelling programme, focusing on learner narrative identity development. Five participants employed at the global corporation were joined in the study and taught by the researcher during the spring semester 2018 of the global corporation’s language programme. The dynamic assessment procedure consists of module-based classroom activities including teaching and assessing. The research shows that the dynamic assessment was effective in that learners’ overall narrative identities including narrative level and response were developed as the module learning continued. However, the reflective element of narrative needs to be taught explicitly. The results have implications for future research of developing narrative identity-based dynamic assessment applicable to classroom assessment for improving learners’ narrative identity in high stakes language test preparation.

      • Structural Basis for the Inhibition of Human Lysozyme by PliC from Brucella abortus

        Um, Si-Hyeon,Kim, Jin-Sik,Kim, Kuglae,Kim, Nahee,Cho, Hyun-Soo,Ha, Nam-Chul American Chemical Society 2013 Biochemistry Vol.52 No.51

Lysozymes are the first line of defense for a diverse range of organisms that catalyze the degradation of bacterial peptidoglycan. Gram-negative bacteria produce proteinaceous lysozyme inhibitors to protect themselves from the action of lysozymes. To date, MliC or PliC (membrane-bound or periplasmic inhibitor of c-type lysozyme, respectively) has been found in various Gram-negative bacteria. Here, we report the crystal structures of Brucella abortus PliC and its complex with human c-type lysozyme. The complex structure demonstrates that the invariant loop of MliC/PliC plays a crucial role in the inhibition of lysozyme via its insertion into the active site cleft of the lysozyme, as previously observed in the complex structure of Pseudomonas aeruginosa MliC and chicken c-type lysozyme. We identified a new binding interface between a loop adjacent to the active site of human lysozyme and a loop carrying Glu112 of B. abortus PliC, the structure of which was disordered in P. aeruginosa MliC. Because MliC/PliC family members have been implicated as putative colonization or virulence factors, the structures and mechanism of action of MliC/PliC will be relevant to the control of bacterial growth in animal hosts.

Graphic Abstract

ACS Electronic Supporting Info
