Dynamic light scattering (DLS) studies were carried out to investigate the aggregation behavior of 1.1 M solutions of tributyl phosphate (TBP), N,N-dihexyl octanamide (DHOA) and of N,N-dihexyl decanamide (DHDA) in n-dodecane equilibrated with varying concentrations of nitric acid (0.1–6 M) and of Th (10–200 g/L). There was a gradual increase in thorium extraction with increased aqueous phase acidities. A significant enhancement in the aggregate sizes was observed with increasing concentration of thorium in the organic phase. The effect of 1-octanol as phase modifier was also investigated on the aggregation behavior of extracted species for TBP system.

Twenty-four new born crossbred (Bos indicus$\times$Bos taurus) calves were distributed in two equal groups and assigned to two different pre-starter diets with (Group 1) and without (Group 2) fish meal to study the effect of replacement of animal protein by vegetable protein in the diet and the age of animals on ruminal metabolic development. All calves were fed colostrum for 24 h and whole milk until weaning at 8 weeks of age. Rumen fluid samples were collected on 4 d, 1 wk, and then weekly interval up to 8 wk of age. Rumen fluid samples were analysed for pH, TVFA, lactic acid and N fractions (total N, total soluble N, trichloro acetic acid (TCA) soluble N, TCA precipitable N and ammonia N). Weekly feed intake and live weight gain pattern showed an increasing trend with the advancement of age, but were similar in both groups. The pH fell steadily during 0-4 wk of age and then stabilized in later period. A close relationship (r=0.80) between starter intake and TVFA concentration was observed in both the groups. Lactic acid (meq/l) and ammonia N (mg/dl) concentration showed initial rise (0.55 and 14.97 on day 4 to 3.38 (7 wk) and 32.85 (4 wk), respectively) to fall (2.74 and 17.60) again during 8 wk of age in response to increase in dry feed consumption (10% initially to 83% of diet dry matter at 8 wk of age). The TCA precipitable fraction of N did not show any change during 0-8 wk of age. Data indicate that the metabolic changes responded rapidly to dry feed intake which did not differ in fish meal and non-fish meal groups, and a poor voluntary consumption of oat hay retards the progressive changes in live weight and rumen microbial development.

<P><B>Abstract</B></P> <P>Iron doped lithium metasilicate sample was synthesized using a combustion technique and characterized by XRD (X ray diffraction), SEM (scanning electron microscopy), FTIR (Fourier transform infrared spectroscopy), optical, and EPR (electron paramagnetic resonance) analyses. The phase purity of the combustion synthesized products was confirmed by XRD analysis. SEM data suggested the formation of a porous compound by virtue of the entrapment of the gases that evolved during the sample synthesis. FTIR data confirmed the formation of SiO bonds in the system. Optical data confirmed the existence of both divalent and trivalent iron in the system. Characteristic absorption bands in the region 215–270 nm and 535–620 nm were observed due to the presence of Fe3+ in Oh and Td geometry respectively. On the other hand, the presence of bands at 967 and 1442 nm suggested the stabilisation of Fe2+ also in both Oh and Td geometries, respectively. The divalent iron being a non-Kramer ion, could not be observed by EPR. However, strong temperature-dependent EPR signals were observed in the sample owing to Fe3+. By analyzing the EPR data, super-paramagnetic type of behaviour was observed in the system. Furthermore, the relaxation times along with other EPR spectroscopic parameters were estimated for the system.</P>

<P>Li2SiO3:Sm was synthesized by the solution combustion method. Powder x-ray diffraction technique was used to find the phase formation. Li2SiO3:Sm exhibits thermoluminescence (TL) peaks at approximately 140 degrees C, 155 degrees C, 190 degrees C, 250 degrees C, and 405 degrees C. Three defect centers contribute to the observed electron spin resonance spectrum from the gamma irradiated phosphor. Center I with principal g-values g(parallel to) = 2.0206 and g(perpendicular to) = 2.0028 is identified as an O-2(-) ion while center II, with an isotropic g-factor 2.0039, is assigned to an F+-type center. Center III is assigned to a Ti3+ center. The Ti3+ center is related to the 250 degrees C TL peak while the O-2(-) ion also correlates with the main TL peak at 250 degrees C. An additional defect center is observed during thermal annealing experiments, and the center (assigned to F+ center) seems to originate from an F center. The F center appears to be associated with the high temperature TL peak in a Li2SiO3: Sm phosphor. The luminescence spectrum reveals the dominant emission peaks at 605 ((4)G(5/2) -> H-6(7/2)) nm under the excitation wavelength of 402 nm.</P>

Two experiments were conducted to determine the effect of feeding levels on intake and nutrient utilization of oat (Avena sativa) hay (OH) by goats and potential feeding value of leftovers from high levels of offer in sheep. In experiment 1, the goats (15) were offered OH at three levels of feeding to give leftovers of about 20% (T-1), 35% (T-2) and 50% (T-3) of DM offered. A marked effect of refusal rate of OH on intake and digestibility of nutrients was evident. Allowing selective consumption at higher levels (T-2 and T-3), the intake of DCP and TDN from OH was found not only to meet the maintenance requirement but provided surplus nutrients for moderate production. In experiment 2, Sheep (3) were offered one of the three dietary treatments viz OH, refusals left uneaten by goats in T-2 and T-3 (OHR) and 3% urea treated oat hay refusals (UTR) in a $3{\times}3$ latin square design. Though the potential feeding value of leftovers (OHR and UTR) was lower than OH, the results confirm the possibility of their effective use. It was concluded that feeding above the conventional ad libitum level could be an alternative to improve the performance of ruminants fed feeds like oat hay. The potential impact of the strategy would, however, depend on the effective reutilization of leftovers for feeding other animals.
