      • MicroRNAs and Lymph Node Metastasis in Papillary Thyroid Cancers

Mutalib, Nurul-Syakima Ab,Yusof, Azliana Mohamad,Mokhtar, Norfilza Mohd,Harun, Roslan,Muhammad, Rohaizak,Jamal, Rahman Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2016 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.17 No.1

Lymph node metastasis (LNM) in papillary thyroid cancer (PTC) has been shown to be associated with increased risk of locoregional recurrence, poor prognosis and decreased survival, especially in older patients. Hence, there is a need for a reliable biomarker for the prediction of LNM in this cancer. MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are small noncoding RNAs that regulate gene translation or degradation and play key roles in numerous cellular functions including cell-cycle regulation, differentiation, apoptosis, invasion and migration. Various studies have demonstrated deregulation of miRNA levels in many diseases including cancers. While a large number of miRNAs have been identified from PTCs using various means, association of miRNAs with LNM in such cases is still controversial. Furthermore, studies linking most of the identified miRNAs to the mechanism of LNM have not been well documented. The aim of this review is to update readers on the current knowledge of miRNAs in relation to LNM in PTC.

      • The Quest for Leadership Legitimacy among Singapore Malays

Hussin Mutalib 서울대학교행정대학원 2012 Asian Journal of Political Science Vol.20 No.1

Much has been written about the problems and concerns affecting the Malay ethnicminority in Singapore. These include issues such as their socio-economic situation, relatively low educational performance, and increasing incidences of social ailments likehigh rates of drug addiction, divorce and youth delinquency. In the context of Singapore’smultiracial and multi-religious fabric, little has been articulated about what is hereargued to be a core issue of the ‘Malay plight’, namely, the legitimacy of the Malaypolitical leadership. Apparently both the ruling-party-affiliated Malay politicians andtheir Malay opposition counterpart have been at odds with their perceptions andpredispositions towards this particular issue. It is here that a bold, albeit controversial, alternative model called the ‘collective leadership’, was publicly goaded by the Associationof Malay/Muslim Professionals in both their 1990 and 2000 National Conventions, which requires due consideration. Perhaps at a time of a changing Singapore society, thisalternative or its variant could go some way towards mitigating, if not resolving, thelong-standing Malay plight, and thus, benefit not only the Malay minority itself, butSingapore as a whole.

      • miR-205 in Situ Expression and Localization in Head and Neck Tumors - a Tissue Array Study

Ab Mutalib, Nurul-Syakima,Lee, Learn-Han,Cheah, Yoke-Kqueen Asian Pacific Journal of Cancer Prevention 2014 Asian Pacific journal of cancer prevention Vol.15 No.21

Background: microRNAs are small non-coding RNA that control gene expression by mRNA degradation or translational inhibition. These molecules are known to play essential roles in many biological and physiological processes. miR-205 may be differentially expressed in head and neck cancers; however, there are conflicting data and localization of expression has yet to be determined. Materials and Methods: miR-205 expression was investigated in 48 cases of inflammatory, benign and malignant tumor tissue array of the neck, oronasopharynx, larynx and salivary glands by Locked Nucleic Acid in situ hybridization (LNA-ISH) technology. Results: miR-205 expression was significantly differentially expressed across all of the inflammatory, benign and malignant tumor tissues of the neck. A significant increase in miR-205 staining intensity (p<0.05) was observed from inflammation to benign and malignant tumors in head and neck tissue array, suggesting that miR-205 could be a biomarker to differentiate between cancer and non-cancer tissues. Conclusions: LNA-ISH revealed that miR-205 exhibited significant differential cytoplasmic and nuclear staining among inflammation, benign and malignant tumors of head and neck. miR-205 was not only exclusively expressed in squamous epithelial malignancy. This study offers information and a basis for a comprehensive study of the role of miR-205 that may be useful as a biomarker and/or therapeutic target in head and neck tumors.

Enhancement in photocatalytic degradation of methylene blue by LaFeO3-GO integrated photocatalyst-adsorbents under visible light irradiation

        Muhazri Abd Mutalib,Farhana Aziz,Nur Aisyah Jamaludin,Norsyazwani Yahya,Ahmad Fauzi Ismail,Mohamad Azuwa Mohamed,Mohd Zamri Mohd Yusop,Wan Norharyati Wan Salleh,Juhana Jaafar,Norhaniza Yusof 한국화학공학회 2018 Korean Journal of Chemical Engineering Vol.35 No.2

Perovskite LaFeO3 photocatalyst prepared by using sol-gel glucose method was assembled on graphene oxide sheets to produce integrated photocatalyst-adsorbents (IPCA) and investigated as photocatalyst for the degradation of methylene blue under visible light irradiation. The prepared photocatalyst was characterized by FTIR, XRD, FESEM, BET specific surface area measurement, TEM/HRTEM and UV-Vis spectroscopy analysis. The FTIR, FESEM and TEM analysis has suggested that the photocatalyst LaFeO3 has been successfully embedded at the surface of the graphene oxide (GO) sheets due to a strong interaction between the photocatalyst and the adsorbents matrix. Methylene blue degradation shows that IPCA possesses higher photodegradation kinetics compared to bare LaFeO3 photocatalyst. The resultant photocatalyst also possesses magnetic properties which can overcome the difficulty in recollecting and removal of photocatalyst suspension in water after photocatalytic treatment.

Eff ect of Geometric Parameters (β and τ) on Behaviour of Cold Formed Stainless Steel Tubular X-Joints

        Mohamed H. Mussa,Azrul A. Mutalib 한국강구조학회 2018 International Journal of Steel Structures Vol.18 No.3

CIDECT guideline of carbon steel is frequently applied to design the cold-formed stainless steel tubular X-joints. The allowable range of the brace to chord width ratio (β) had been recorded in this guideline without mention to specifi c limits for the brace to chord thickness ratio (τ). Therefore, this study was carried out to investigate the eff ect of β and τ ratios on the behaviour of tubular X-joints by using LUSAS software. Three numerical models were created based on the stainless steel sheet type which symbolled as XD (duplex EN1.4462), XH (high strength austenitic), and XN (normal AISI 304). A good consistency was achieved with the experimental test in terms of load–defl ection behaviour, ultimate joint strength, and failure modes within a maximum error of 8.63%. Parametric studies results indicated that the increased of (β) ratio at constant (τ = 1) capable to increase the joint strength which was quite conservative with the CIDECT design strengths of specimens failed with the chord side wall failure, while it was unconservative to chord face failure. Hence, equations were proposed to calculate the joint strength for specimens failed by chord face failure. A range of (0.4–2) had proposed for (τ) ratio. The ultimate joint strength obviously increased at high values of (τ) ratio within a constant value of (β = 1). Moreover, the chord side wall and brace local buckling failure modes observed when (τ > 0.5) and (τ ≤ 0.5), respectively, which indicated that the brace local buckling failure can be only occurred when (β > 0.85) and (τ ≤ 0.5).

Numerical formulation of P-I diagrams for blast damage prediction and safety assessment of RC panels

        Mohamed H. Mussa,Azrul A. Mutalib,Hong Hao 국제구조공학회 2020 Structural Engineering and Mechanics, An Int'l Jou Vol.75 No.5

A numerical study is carried out to assess the dynamic response and damage level of one- and two-way reinforced concrete (RC) panels subjected to explosive loads by using finite element LS-DYNA software. The precision of the numerical models is validated with the previous experimental test. The calibrated models are used to conduct a series of parametric studies to evaluate the effects of panel wall dimensions, concrete strength, and steel reinforcement ratio on the blast-resistant capacity of the panel under various magnitudes of blast load. The results are used to develop pressure-impulse (P-I) diagrams corresponding to the damage levels defined according to UFC-3-340-02 manual. Empirical equations are proposed to easily construct the P-I diagrams of RC panels that can be efficiently used to assess its safety level against blast loads.

Nutrition Evaluation Screening Tool: An Easy to Use Screening Tool for Hospitalised Children

Dokal, Kitt,Asmar, Nadia,Shergill-Bonner, Rita,Mutalib, Mohamed The Korean Society of Pediatric Gastroenterology 2021 Pediatric gastroenterology, hepatology & nutrition Vol.24 No.1

Purpose: Nutrition screening is vital to ensure patients are appropriately managed in hospital. In paediatrics there is currently no universally accepted nutrition screening tool. The Nutrition Evaluation Screening Tool (NEST) was developed as an easy to use and practical screening tool for hospitalised children. We aim to evaluate compliance of the NEST and assess agreement of the NEST with the already validated nutrition screening tools, Screening Tool for Risk on Nutritional Status and Growth (STRONGkids), Screening Tool for the Assessment of Malnutrition in Paediatrics (STAMP) and the Subjective Global Nutritional Assessment (SGNA) tool. Methods: Retrospective review of 102 patient episodes at the Evelina London Children's Hospital. Electronic records were used to assess NEST compliance and to complete the nutrition tools for each patient episode. Cohen's kappa was used to determine the level of agreement between each nutrition tool. Results: There was moderate agreement between the NEST and the two screening tools, STRONGkids (κ=0.472) and STAMP (κ=0.416) for patients on initial screening at admission. 87.2% of patient episodes were NEST compliant within 24 hours of admission to hospital. Conclusion: The moderate agreement between these two already validated screening tools enhances the NEST's validity as a paediatric screening tool. The NEST had the strongest correlation with the SGNA tool compared to other screening tools. The NEST is user friendly screening tool for hospitalised children.

      • Strengthening of the panel zone in steel moment-resisting frames

        Abedini, Masoud,Raman, Sudharshan N.,Mutalib, Azrul A.,Akhlaghi, Ebrahim Techno-Press 2019 Advances in computational design Vol.4 No.4

Rehabilitation and retrofitting of structures designed in accordance to standard design codes is an essential practice in structural engineering and design. For steel structures, one of the challenges is to strengthen the panel zone as well as its analysis in moment-resisting frames. In this research, investigations were undertaken to analyze the influence of the panel zone in the response of structural frames through a computational approach using ETABS software. Moment-resisting frames of six stories were studied in supposition of real panel zone, different values of rigid zone factor, different thickness of double plates, and both double plates and rigid zone factor together. The frames were analyzed, designed and validated in accordance to Iranian steel building code. The results of drift values for six stories building models were plotted. After verifying and comparing the results, the findings showed that the rigidity lead to reduction in drifts of frames and also as a result, lower rigidity will be used for high rise building and higher rigidity will be used for low rise building. In frames with story drifts more than the permitted rate, where the frames are considered as the weaker panel zone area, the story drifts can be limited by strengthening the panel zone with double plates. It should be noted that higher thickness of double plates and higher rigidity of panel zone will result in enhancement of the non-linear deformation rates in beam elements. The resulting deformations of the panel zone due to this modification can have significant influence on the elastic and inelastic behavior of the frames.
