A Study on SiC Particulates Reinforced Al-Li Composites Consolidated by Hot Isostatie Pressing

SiC particulates reinforced Al-Li (Al-Li/SiCp) composite powders were produced by mechanical milling and were consolidated by hot isostatic pressing (HIP) at various temperatures and pressures. Prior to HIP, the composite powders compacted upto a relative density of 80% were put into a steel capsule and were degassed while heating. Thermogravity analysis revealed that the moisture adsorbed on the surface of composite powders could be removed at 508 K. Based on the result, degassing was carried out at 573 K and 773 K for 1 hour. SiC particulates of HIPped specimens were aggregated on the prior particle boundaries of Al-Li matrix powders under all HIP conditions. The density and tensile strength of HIPped specimens increased and the ductility decreased with increasing HIP temperature and pressure.

Ethylene has an inhibitory effect on flowering in a short-day (SD) plant chrysanthemum (Chrysanthemum morifolium Ramat.). In this study, we used a hexaploid chrysanthemum ‘Sei-Marine’and found that its transgenic lines transformed with a mutated ethylene receptor gene mDGERS1(etr1-4), which conferred reduced ethylene sensitivity (J. Plant Biol. 51: 424-427, 2008), opened flowers earlier than the non-transformed control. We examined whether the accelerated flower induction in the transformant occurred through the enhanced expression of chrysanthemum genes homologous to FLOWERING LOCUS T (FT), a floral inducer gene in Arabidopsis. We cloned three cDNAs for FT homologs (CmFTL1, CmFTL2, and CmFTL3) from ‘Sei-Marine’. CmFTL2 putatively encodes a non-functional gene product due to a frame shift caused by a 2 bp-deletion in the coding region. RT-PCR analysis revealed differential expression patterns of CmFTL genes in the transgenic and control lines,suggesting that these genes might be under the control of ethylene. CmFTL1/2 mRNA level was lower in a SD condition than a long-day (LD) condition. CmFTL3 mRNA accumulated abundantly under SD condition as compared with LD condition in the transgenic line. These results suggest the association of increased expression of CmFTL3gene with the accelerated flowering in the transgenic line with reduced ethylene sensitivity.

Existing steel girder bridges have often suff ered damage at the girder ends during large-scale earthquakes. Against such damage cases, experimental and analytical studies on the failure behavior of steel girder end under lateral force have been carried out so far. However, there are still few study cases focusing on the three-dimensional behavior and load-carrying capacity of the whole superstructure system. In this paper, pushover analyses with nonlinear fi nite element models were performed for a composite steel I-girder bridge in order to investigate the damage mechanism and load-carrying capacity at the girder end under seismic lateral force in the longitudinal and transverse direction. In addition, parametric studies on the eff ect of additional reinforcing ribs at the pin support area on the load-carrying capacity was conducted. Pushover analyses clarifi ed the damage behavior at the girder ends, including the plasticization and deformation process of each steel component, and also revealed that the load-carrying capacity in the transverse direction is smaller than that in the longitudinal direction. It was found that reinforcing ribs provide a resistance function against lateral forces not only in the longitudinal direction but also in the transverse direction and improve the load-carrying capacity.
A case of hepatic anisakidosis caused by Anisakis pegreffii mimicking liver cancer

Extra-gastrointestinal anisakidosis is rare. We herein report an Anisakis pegreffii infection in a patient with hepatic anisakidosis diagnosed based on its molecular identification. A 71-year-old male patient had a hepatic tumor presenting as a low-density area of 20 mm in diameter in segment 6 of the liver on abdominal ultrasonography, computed tomography, and magnetic resonance imaging. The surgically resected pathological specimen revealed a necrotizing eosinophilic granuloma containing nematode larvae, possibly an Anisakis larva. Molecular and phylogenetic analysis demonstrated Anisakis larvae belonging to A. pegreffii. The present results will help identify and characterize unknown Anisakis species in histological sections.

Tension and shear block failure is a limit state which occurs in the connection of tension steel members. The failure mechanism is a combination of tensile failure on one plane and shear failure on the perpendicular plane. The design strength equations for the tension and shear block failure are described in the well known design codes. However, they provide inconsistent levels of safety when they are used in different types of connections. In this paper, the authors survey the design strength equations in the various codes. Then, the pertinent strength equations for the gusset plates of steel truss bridges are selected. Moreover, the authors propose a pair of strength equations for compression and shear block failure for gusset plates subjected to compressive force. And to examine the applicability of proposed equations and to investigate the mechanical behavior of compression gusset plates, parametric analyses on the various thicknesses of gusset plates were conducted.
