        The Effect of Green Oak Acorn (Quercus ilex) Based Diet on Growth Performance and Meat Fatty Acid Composition of Broilers

        This experiment was conducted to compare the effects of oak acorns and corn on broilers growth performance, carcass characteristics and meat fatty acid (FA) composition according to different ages of broilers. Two separate groups of 400 male broilers, reared for six weeks, were fed diets containing 33.5% green oak acorns (GO) and 67% of corn (C), respectively. At day 35, the body weight of the chickens fed the GO diet was 12% lower (p<0.05) compared with controls (C). However, at day 56 birds reached similar final weights. Abdominal adipose tissue (AAT) was 78% higher in the controls compared to those fed the oak acorn-based diet. The total lipids (TL) of thigh muscle were higher in the controls compared to dietary treatment GO (3.1 against 2.5 g/100 g of muscle). There were significant differences in fatty acid (FA) composition of the muscle between two groups. The broilers fed oak acorn exhibited more C18:2, as well as a higher proportion of polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) and PUFA:SFA (saturated fatty acid) ratio than those on the control diet, but no significant differences were observed among groups for the age of birds. There was a higher proportion of linolenic acid in broilers fed the oak acorn compared to the controls (0.8 vs. 0.6%). Furthermore, linolenic acid content decreased with age (p<0.001) in both groups. The results indicated no significant differences in FA with the age of birds. In conclusion, the meat fatty acids provided by the GO diet appeared to improve the nutritional quality preferred by the consumer.

        Determination of Principal Component Analysis Models for Sensor Fault Detection and Isolation

        In this paper, a new method for determining the Principal Component Analysis (PCA) model structure for system diagnosis is proposed. This method, based on the variables reconstruction principle, determines the PCA model optimizing detection and isolation of single or multiple faults affecting redundant or non redundant variables of a system. This new method has been validated by a simulation example.

        Effect of Graded Levels of Tallow in the Diet on Performance, Digestibility of Fat, Lipogenesis and Body Lipid Deposition of the Weaned Piglet

        Thirty piglets weaned at 24.5 d of age ($6.9{\pm}0.5kg$) randomly alloted to 3 treatments were used to investigate the effect of dietary tallow on average performance, digestibility of nutrients, metabolic utilization of energy and body composition at 25 kg. Weaned piglets respond to increasing levels of dietary tallow from 0 to 4% and 8% by digestive and metabolic adaptation. Apparent fecal digestibility of fat (AFDf) was highly correlated with the level of dietary tallow (X as % of fat extracted after HCl hydrolysis) by the following curvilinear equation of regression: $AFDf=33.8+6.9X-0.3X^2$. Feed intake expressed as DE was only significantly increased at the higher inclusion level of tallow. But neither average daily gain, nor feed conversion was affected by the addition of fat. On the other hand, body composition at 25 kg was equally affected, by both levels of supplementary fat; dry matter and energy content in the body were significantly higher (p<0.01) in piglets receiving tallow. As a consequence, the energy cost of the live weight gain was also increased from 23 to 24.7 MJ DE/kg (p<0.02) and the efficiency of energy deposition was decreased from 3.2 to 2.8 MJ DE/MJ deposited energy (p<0.01) in the presence of dietary tallow. An increase in the level of fat stimulated the activity of pancreatic lipase up to a constant value of $22{\pm}1.4IU/mg$ protein but conversely depressed the activity of amylase from 300 to 100 IU/mg of protein. The activity of liver acetyl CoA carboxylase and malic enzyme in the perirenal fat were low lind not affected by dietary fat; the activity of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase was high. Opposite to that, the activity of acetyl CoA carboxylase and malic enzyme in the perirenal and backfat were higher than in the liver and both were significantly reduced by the inclusion of fat in the diet. A direct deposition of dietary fat has been demonstrated by increasing the energy and lipid content of the empty body weight gain between 7 and 25 kg of live weight, and decreasing the efficiency of digestible energy utilization.

        PCA Fault Isolation Using Interval Reconstruction

        Fault detection and isolation (FDI) based on principal component analysis (PCA) has been widely developed. However, PCA is used for FDI without regard to model uncertainties. In this paper, the model uncertainties being represented as interval, we propose to perform multiple fault isolation by extending the reconstruction principle to interval PCA model. Variable reconstructions can be expressed as a problem of solving a system of interval linear equations. From these reconstructions, interval structured residuals are designed in order to identify the set of faulty variables. However, the number and directions of faults being a priori unknown, a multiple fault isolation strategy is proposed in order to alleviate analyzing all combinations related to simultaneous variable reconstructions. Our innovative method is illustrated on a simulation example. The interest of taking into consideration the model uncertainties on FDI will be illustrated.
