Inhibition of various functions in murine peritoneal macrophages by aflatoxin B1 exposure in vivo
Moon, E.Y.,Rhee, D.K.,Pyo, S. 성균관대학교 약학연구소 1999 成均藥硏論文集 Vol.11 No.-
Aflatoxin B1 (AFB1) has been known to impair specific and nonspecific immunity. In the present study, we tested various functions of murine peritoneal macrophages that were isolated and stimulated with LPS after AFB1 (400㎍/5 ml/kg) was administered every other day for 2 weeks. AFB1 decreased phagocytosis and the production of superoxide anion(O_2^-) and hydrogen peroxide (H_2O_2), compared to those of corn oil-treated control group. In addition, the production of NO and TNF-α was decreased in macrophages of AFB1-treated mice. In vitro antitumor activity of in vivo AFB1-treated macrophages was reduced against target cell, L929. Taken together, these results suggested that AFB1 might have the immunosuppressive effect on macrophages after in vivo exposure, which was related to the antitumor activity reduction. ⓒ 1999 International Society for Immunopharmacology. The Public Philosopher in the Academies : Reflections on Merleau-Ponty's Eloge de la philosophie
Mooney, T. Brian Australian Studies Institute 1997 Journal of Australian studies Vol.4 No.1
Recently we have come to witness an assault on the traditional conception of the university as a centre of detached concern for pure research. The economic rationalist vision which has occasioned this assault has deeply permeated almost every facet of contemporary life and even the specific kind of discourse emanating from this interpretation has managed to ensconce itself within the academies. Philosophers are at particular risk in the uncertain climate that has been created. However philosophers have not addressed the issues which the new ideology has foisted upon the universities with sufficient rigour and clarity. The facility with which economic rationalist considerations have filtered into academic discourse points, I believe, to a deep malaise in academia. The fatalism with which many philosophers have faced the threat has in its own way hypostatised the new ideology and granted it the titanism of some inevitable, irresistible and irrevocable force. The tradition of the public philosopher has not enjoyed the same degree of public approbation in the English-speaking world as has been the case on the European continent, and in particular, in France. One can think of notable exceptions but on the whole the public philosopher in the English-speaking world is a rare breed. Given the radical changes that contemporary universities are undergoing it is clearly worth while to reflect upon the professional philosopher's relationship to other individuals in society, to communities and to the state. Here the meditation will focus on a debate on these issues within France, a country which perhaps more than anywhere else has elevated public philosophy to an art form. Philosophers, perhaps more than any other academics, are prone to a certain hesitancy in attempting to describe what it is they do. Philosophy no doubt employs techniques but it is not itself a technique, nor is there a single problem or series of problems or mysteries which can claim sway over philosophy's subject matter. Such hesitancy, one might say ambiguity, is the very stuff of philosophy and indeed of the philosopher. In Merleau-Ponty's inaugural address to the College de France, later published as Eloge de la philosophie(In Praise of Philosophy, 1953) he returns to these perennial philosophical musings, in particular, through attempting to characterise something of the nature of philosophy and the philosopher.
Cell-Interactive Polymers for Tissue Engineering
Lee, Kuen Yong,Mooney, David J. The Korean Fiber Society 2001 Fibers and polymers Vol.2 No.2
Tissue engineering is one exciting approach to treat patients who need a new organ or tissue. A critical element in this approach is the polymer scaffold, as it provides a space for new tissue formation and mimics many roles of natural extra-cellular matrices. In this review, we describe several design parameters of polymer matrices that can significantly affect cellular behavior, as well as various polymers which are frequently used to date or potentially useful in many tissue engineering applications. Interactions between cells and polymer scaffolds, including specific receptor-ligand interactions, physical and degradation feature of the scaffolds, and delivery of soluble factors, should be considered in the design and tailoring of appropriate polymer matrices to be used in tissue engineering applications, as these interactions control the function and structure of engineered tissues.
Lobbying Activities and Mergers and Acquisitions
Daejin Kim,Tim Mooney,Hyeongsop Shim 한국재무학회 2015 한국재무학회 학술대회 Vol.2015 No.05
We examine corporate lobbying activity and mergers & acquisitions. If eective, rm lob- bying expenditures could in uence legislation and facilitate favorable regulatory treatment, which would be positively re ected in market reactions to merger announcements. However, average announcement returns for lobbying rms are lower than for non-lobbying rms. In addition, lobbying rms tend to have powerful CEOs that receive more cash compensation after a merger. CEO turnover is unaected by lobbying activity. These results suggest that corporate lobbying may be indicative of CEO entrenchment rather than a rm's attempt to maximize shareholder wealth.
