        Evaluation of Genetic Diversity among Some Populations of Thymus daenensis Celak., a Vulnerable Medicinal Plant from Iran

        Thymus daenensis Celak. (Labiatae) endemic of Iran is an aromatic and medicinal plant characterized by a high concentration of thymol that is currently considered an endangered medicinal plant. The present study evaluated the intraand inter-population genetic diversity of T. daenensis by means of morphological and RAPD markers. The 16 primers chosen for analysis revealed 204 bands, of which 95.1% were polymorphic, indicating considerable genetic variation at the species level. In morphological study, significant difference among samples was observed. There was no correlation between clustering based on the morphological and RAPD data, while little correlation was observed between genetic divergence and geographical origins. The results of clustering based on the RAPD data showed that T. daenensis genotypes collected from Malayer and Arak were genetically differentiated and placed in the two separate groups. On the other hand, low intrapopulations variability and heterozygosity were detected.

        Impact of geometric pattern corrosion on limit failure pressure of buried gas pipelines

        Gas pipelines are types of structures that are highly susceptible to corrosion. Sometimes, the pipes are subjected to a thinning of the wall thickness at the inside or outside wall due to erosion/corrosion. Therefore, it is important to evaluate the strength of the pipes undergoing corrosion to maintain the integrity of the piping systems. The main purpose of this study is to understand failure aspects caused by degradation of metal due to corrosion through. The ASME standard offers a relationship for the yielding pressure of the corroded pipes which was compared with the finite element results. The results demonstrate to obtain accurate results, the ASME relationship is unreliable. Moreover, pitting corrosion must be considered critical more than of other types.

        Biosorption of thorium from aqueous solution by Ca-pretreated brown algae Cystoseira indica

        The potential use of a biosorbent, Cystoseira indica, obtained from the Persian Gulf was investigated forthe removal of Th (IV) ions from aqueous solutions by considering equilibrium, kinetic and thermodynamic aspects. The FT-IR spectra of unloaded and Th-loaded biomass indicated various functionalities on the biomass surface includinghydroxyl, amide and carboxyl groups, which are responsible for the binding of thorium ions. Th (IV) uptake by C. indica was pH dependent. An increase in biosorbent dosage up to 1 g/L caused an increase in the Th (IV) percentageremoval. Biosorption process at all studied initial Th (IV) ion concentrations follows the pseudo-second order kineticmodel. The biosorption data could be well described by Redlich-Peterson isotherm in comparison to Langmuir andFreundlich isotherms. The maximum sorption capacity of Th (IV) by Langmuir isotherm was estimated to be 169.49mg/g at 45 oC with pH of 3. The thermodynamic parameters indicated the biosorption of Th on the biomass was a feasible,spontaneous and endothermic process. Th sorption capacity remained unaffected or slightly affected (<10% inhibition)in the presence of several interfering ions such as uranium (VI), nickel (II) and copper (II). The reusabilityof the biomass was also determined after five sorption-desorption cycles.

        Changes in Morphological and Growing Traits, and Active Substances of Artificial Autotetraploids in Dragonhead (Dracocephalum moldavica L.)

        Artificial autotetraploids of dragonhead (Dracocephalum moldavica L.) were introduced by treating young plants with aqueous solutions of colchicine at two stages, consisting of the emergence of cotyledon leaves and of two true leaves. Six colchicine concentrations of 0, 0.05, 0.1, 0.2, 0.5, and 0.75% were treated in each of these stages. Results showed that application of colchicine at two true leaves stage had desirable results as many treated plants grew and also diversity was observed in characteristics of treated plants. Tetraploid plants were identified by primary morphological selection, studding stomata characteristics, numbering of chloroplasts in the stomatal guard cells, and finally using flow cytometric analyses. Comparison of characteristics of tetraploid plants with diploids indicated that the higher level of ploidy in dragonhead caused changes in some morphological and physiological traits and active substances.

        Life table parameters of Plodia interpunctella (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae) on four commercial pistachio cultivars

        Life table parameters of Indianmeal moth, Plodia interpunctella (Hübner) (Lepidoptera: Pyralidae), on four pistachiocultivars (Akbari, Ahmad-Aghaii, Fandoghi and Kalehghouchi) were studied in laboratory at 28 ± 0.5 °C,50 ± 5% RH and a photoperiod of 16:8 h (L:D). The larvae successfully developed on all cultivars. The shortestand longest larval periods were recorded on Akbari and Kalehghouchi, respectively. The fecundity of femalesvaried from 109.19 to 157.81 eggs on Kalehghouchi and Akbari, respectively. The adult longevity varied from6.19 to 6.75 days on Fandoghi and Akbari, respectively. The intrinsic rate of increase (rm) ranged from 0.0961to 0.1382 (female/female/day) on Kalehghouchi and Akbari, respectively. The mean generation time (T) wasfound 35.67 to 31.83 days on Kalehghouchi and Akbari, respectively. The Kalehghouchi cultivarwas less suitable,and the Akbari cultivar was the most suitable host for P. interpunctella in comparison with other cultivars. Theseresults provide important information on population growth potential of P. interpunctella on four commercialpistachio cultivars.

        Evaluation of the serum sex hormones levels and alkaline phosphatase activity in rats’ testis after administering of berberine in experimental varicocele

        Current study was aimed to investigate the protective effect of berberine (BB) on the serum gonadotropin-releasing hormone (GnRH), follicle-stimulating hormone (FSH), luteinizing hormone (LH), inhibin B (INHB), testosterone (T) and alkaline phosphatase (Alk-p) activity in the testis of experimental varicocele-induced animals. For the current objective, 30 mature-male Wistar rats were randomly divided into control (n = 6 rats), control-sham (n = 6 rats) and experimental groups (n = 18 rats). The animals in the experimental groups were undergone experimental varicocele and simple laparotomy was conducted in control-sham group. 60 days after varicocele (VCL) induction the experimental group subdivided into: nontreated VCL-induced and 50 mg/kg and 100 mg/kg BB-treated groups (intra-peritoneally). Following 60 days, the animals were euthanized and serum levels of testosterone and testicular activity of alkaline phosphatase were measured. Non-treated VCL-induced animals indicated a significant (P < 0.05) reduction in serum levels of T and INHB and a remarkable (P < 0.05) increase in GnRH, FSH, LH and Alk-p activity compared to control and control-sham groups. Insignificant changes were found between control and control-sham groups. Meanwhile, each BB administered group showed a remarkable (P < 0.05) increase in serum levels of T and INHB and a significant (P < 0.05) decrease in GnRH, FSH, LH and alkaline phosphatase activity in testis tissue. According to the current findings, BB by increasing serum levels of testosterone and INHB increases the testicular endocrine capacity and protects Leydig cell against inflammatory and oxidant injury of varicocele.
