        UNUSUAL ELECTROCHEMICAL RESPONSE OF ELECTROCHEMICAL ETCHING ON MULTIWALLED CARBON NANOTUBES

        Multiwalled carbon nanotubes (MWNTs) can be etched at potentials more positive than 1.7 V versus Ag/AgCl (3 M KCl) in 0.2 M HNO3. The electrochemically etched MWNTs show an increase in electrochemical impedance and sluggish electron transfer kinetics, and lose the electrocatalytic effects toward the oxidation of glucose, H2O2, uric acid (UA) and L-ascorbic acid (L-AA). Transmission electron microscope (TEM) images reveal that the nanotube tips are cut off by electrochemical oxidation. This may lead to the degradation of electrocatalytic ability in the MWNTs. Furthermore, the current response after different electrochemically etched cycles shows that the electrocatalytic ability of the MWNTs toward different molecules can be tuned by etched cycles. For example, five etched cycles leads to the total disappearance of the oxidative response to L-AA, with the remaining over 50% of the UA current response in the L-AA and UA mixture. Thus, electrochemical etching is a simple yet novel way to tune the electrocatalytic reactivity and improve the selectivity of the MWNTs.

      • Positive Association Between IL-16 rs11556218 T/G Polymorphism and Cancer Risk: a Meta-analysis

        Background: Interleukin-16 (IL-16) is a multifunctional cytokine which plays a key role in inflammatory and autoimmune diseases as well as in cancer. Genetic polymorphisms of IL-16 have been implicated in susceptibility to cancer. However, associations remain inconclusive. The present meta-analysis was therefore carried out to establish a more conclusive association of IL-16 polymorphisms with cancer risk. Materials and Methods: Relevant studies were searched through the PubMed, Embase, Web of Science, Google Scholar and Wan fang electronic databases updated in October 2013. Odds ratios (OR) and 95% confidence intervals (95% CI) were used to assess the association between IL-16 polymorphisms and cancer risk. Results: Eight eligible studies (rs4778889 T/C: 8, rs11556218 T/G: 7, rs4072111 C/T: 6) that met our selection criteria were included. The meta-analysis indicated that rs11556218 T/G was associated with a significant increased risk of cancer (G vs. T, OR=1.321, 95% CI=1.142-1.528, P<0.001; TG vs. TT, OR=1.665, 95% CI=1.448-1.915, P<0.001; GG+TG vs. TT, OR=1.622, 95% CI=1.416-1.858, P<0.001),as well as nasopharyngeal carcinoma and colorectal cancer. Furthermore, in the subgroup of Chinese, significant associations were found between rs11556218 polymorphism and cancer risk. There was no statistically significant association between the other two variants (rs4778889, rs4072111) and risk of cancer. Conclusions: This meta-analysis suggests that the IL-16 rs11556218 polymorphism is associated with increased cancer risk. Large well-designed studies involving various cancer types and different populations are now needed.

        Propagation characteristics of longitudinal wave, shear wave and bending wave in porous circular nanoplates

        On the basis of nonlocal strain gradient theory, considering the material properties of porous FGM changing with thickness and the influence of moment of inertia, the wave equation of FG nano circular plate is derived by using the first-order shear deformation plate theory, by introducing dimensionless parameters, we transform the equations into dimensionless wave equations, and the dispersion relations of bending wave, shear wave and longitudinal wave are obtained by Laplace and Hankel integral transformation method. The influence of nonlocal parameter, porosity volume fraction, strain gradient parameters and power law index on the propagation characteristics of bending wave, shear wave and longitudinal wave in FG nano circular plate.

        Effects of Propranolol on the Left Ventricular Volume of Normal Subjects During CT Coronary Angiography

        Objective: The purpose of this study is to determine the effects of propranolol on the left ventricular (LV) volume during CT coronary angiography. Materials and Methods: The LV volume of 252 normal Chinese subjects (126 subjects with propranolol medication and 126 age- and gender-matched Chinese subjects without medication) was estimated using 64 slices multi-detector CT (MDCT). The heart rate difference was analyzed by the logistic linear regression model with variables that included gender, age, body height, body weight, systolic blood pressure (SBP), diastolic blood pressure (DBP) and the dosage of propranolol. The following global LV functional parameters were calculated: the real-end diastolic volume (EDV), the real-end systolic volume (ESV) and the real-ejection fraction (EF). Results: The female subjects had a greater decrease of heart rate after taking propranolol. The difference of heart rate was negatively correlated with the dosage of propranolol. The real-EDV, the real-ESV and the real-EF ranged from 48.1 to 109 mL/m2, 6.1 to 57.1 mL/m2 and 41% to 88%, respectively. There was no significant difference in the SBP and DBP between the groups without and with propranolol medication (123 ± 17 and 80 ± 10 mmHg; 120 ± 14 and 80 ± 11 mmHg, respectively). The real-EDV showed no significant difference between these two groups, but the real-ESV and real-EF showed significant differences between these two groups (69.4 ± 9.3 and 70.6 ± 8.9 mL/m2; 23.5 ± 5.7 and 25.6 ± 3.7 mL/m2, 66.5 ± 5.1% and 63.5 ± 4.6%, respectively). Conclusion: The difference of heart rate is significantly influenced by gender and the dosage of propranolol. Propranolol will also increase the ESV, which contributes to a decreased EF, while the SBP, DBP and EDV are not statistically changed.         Astrocyte elevated gene-1 (AEG-1) is a recently discovered oncogene that has been reported to be highly expressed in various types of malignant tumors, including renal cell carcinoma. However, the precise role of AEG-1 in renal cancer cell proliferation and apoptosis has not been clarified. In this study, we transfected the renal cancer cell line Caki-1 with a plasmid expressing AEG-1 short hairpin RNA (shRNA) and obtained cell colonies with stable knockdown of AEG-1. We found that AEG-1 down-regulation inhibited cell proliferation and colony formation and arrested cell cycle progression at the sub-G1 and G0/G1 phase. Western blot analysis indicated that the expression of proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA), cyclin D1 and cyclin E were significantly reduced following AEG-1 down-regulation. In addition, AEG-1 knockdown led to the appearance of apoptotic bodies in renal cancer cells, and the ratio of apoptotic cells significantly increased. Expression of the antiapoptotic factor Bcl-2 was dramatically reduced, whereas the pro-apoptotic factors Bax, caspase-3 and poly (ADPribose) polymerase (PARP) were significantly activated. Finally, AEG-1 knockdown in Caki-1 cells remarkably suppressed cell proliferation and enhanced cell apoptosis in response to 5-fluorouracil (5-FU) treatment, suggesting that AEG-1 inhibition sensitizes Caki-1 cells to 5-FU. Taken together, our data suggest that AEG-1 plays an important role in renal cancer formation and development and may be a potential target for future gene therapy for renal cell carcinoma.

        Two new (1 and 3) two known diarylhep-tanoids (2 and 4), along with two tetralones (5 and 6), one naphthoquinone (7), four phenylpropanoids (8-11), and phenol (12) were isolated from the leaves of Juglans mandshurica. Their structures were elucidated on the basis of spectral and chemical data. Compounds 2 and 10 are firstly isolated from this plant and 8 and 12 were isolated from the Juglans genus for the first time. Among these compounds, only 7 cxhibitcd moderate cytotoxicities against cultured Mgc-803, A549, K562, and Hela tumor cell lines with IC50 values of 25.90, 28.60, 39.06, 44.90 LLM, respectively.

        Association of IgE-mediated allergen sensitivity and promoter polymorphisms of chemokine (C–C motif) ligand 5 gene in Han Chinese patients with allergic skin diseases

        Two single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs), rs2280788 (-28C[G) and rs2107538 (-403G[A), in the promoter region of chemokine (C–C motif) ligand 5 (CCL5) was reported to be involved in the immunoglobulin E (IgE) expression and IgE-mediated allergic reactions. This study was to investigate the characteristics of total serum IgE level, specific allergen sensitivities and the two SNPs in the allergic skin disease (ASD) patients. ASD patients visiting the dermatological outpatient department of a local hospital were included with certain criteria, and the fasting venous blood was sampled for analysis. Total serum IgE was assayed with an ELISA kit, and 14 kinds of allergen-specific IgE were tested with an allergen screening system. The polymerase chain reaction–restriction fragment length polymorphism method was used to analyze the two SNPs. Among the finally included 437 patients aged from 16 to 85 years, 68.2 % was positive for the total serum IgE, 49.2 % was positive for at least one of the assayed allergen-specific IgE, and 35.0 % was sensitive to house dust mite. In the SNPs analysis, the GG/(GA?AA) ratio and G/A ratio for the -403G[A locus in the male and/or female C45 years subgroup were significantly lower in the total serum IgE positive patients than in the negative patients (P\0.05). Weak linkage disequilibrium was found between -403A and -28C alleles in male subgroups adjusted by age. Conclusively, house dust mite was the most common allergen in ASD patients, and -403A allele of CCL5 promoter was a risk factor for IgE-mediated sensitization.
