Chronic lymphocytic leukemia and concurrent seminoma in the same testis
Kosuke Miyai,Fumihisa Kumazawa,Kimiya Sato,Hitoshi Tsuda 대한병리학회 2022 Journal of Pathology and Translational Medicine Vol.56 No.1
A 59-year-old man presented with a painless testicular mass and underwent a radical orchiectomy. The resected specimen showed a 5-cm-sized, white-yellow and homogenous solid mass in the testicular parenchyma. Histologically, the central part of the tumor exhibited typical features of seminoma. The peripheral part of the tumor exhibited diffuse infiltration of small, monotonous lymphoid cells involving the tunica albuginea. The monotonous lymphoid cells were immunoreactive for CD20, CD79a, CD5, and CD23, and negative for CD3, CD10, and cyclin D1. Kappa light chain restriction was detected on flow cytometry using the resected specimen. Considering the circulating lymphoid cell count of >5.0×103/µL, we diagnosed the peripheral component of the tumor as an infiltration of chronic lymphocytic leukemia. This extremely rare combination of seminoma and lymphoid neoplasm should be considered in the differential diagnosis of classic seminoma with extensive lymphoid reaction in tumors arising in elderly patients.
Distribution of Overwintering Pondloaches (Misgurnus Anguillicaudatus) in Rice fields in Japan

The Pond loach, Misgurnus anguillicaudatus (Cantor, 1842), is widespread in rivers, ponds, swamps and rice fields in Korea and Japan. Although M. anguillicaudatus is a common fresh water fish, it is classified as near threatened in the Red Data list published by the Ministry of Environment, Japan. Korea and Japan have a culture of consuming loaches and the decrease in loach populations may cause the loss of traditional food culture. This study examined the optimal environmental conditions for overwintering loaches in rice fields. The study site was located in Osaki-machi in Miyagi Prefecture, Japan. We randomly collected paddy surface soil (30 cm depth) from 20 rice fields, and M. anguillicaudatus specimen s f rom a p it i n a dry d rain age canal. Misgurnus anguillicaudatus specimens were kept individually in beakers, and body mass and standard length were measured. A total of 19 M. anguillicaudatus specimens were collected from seven rice fields and 31 specimens were collected from the drainage canal. The M. anguillicaudatus that were overwintering in the soil were concentrated in shallow water near the water inlets or outlets of the rice fields. The mean standard length of all M. anguillicaudatus collected in the rice fields and in the pit in the drainage canal was 56.5±11.7mm and 49.9±10.5mm, respectively. There was no significant difference in the body length of the two groups. Our findings suggest that M. anguillicaudatus overwinters in wet and poorly drained rice fields.

This case report outlines a clinically undetected urinary bladder plasmacytoid urothelial carcinoma (PUC) with multiple metastases detected at autopsy. An 89-year-old man presented with edema in the lower limbs. Pleural fluid cytology revealed discohesive carcinomatous cells, although imaging studies failed to identify the primary site of tumor. The patient died of respiratory failure. Autopsy disclosed a prostate tumor and diffusely thickened urinary bladder and rectum without distinct tumorous lesions. Histologically, the tumor consisted of acinar-type prostate adenocarcinoma with no signs of metastasis. Additionally, small, plasmacytoid tumor cells were observed in the urinary bladder/rectum as isolated or small clustering fashions. These metastasized to the lungs, intestine, generalized lymph nodes in a non-mass-forming manner. Combined with immunohistochemical studies, these tumor cells were diagnosed PUC derived from the urinary bladder. Both clinicians and pathologists should recognize PUC as an aggressive histological variant, which can represent a rapid systemic progression without mass-forming lesions.

<P>The zinc transporter protein ZIP13 plays critical roles in bone, tooth, and connective tissue development, and its dysfunction is responsible for the spondylocheirodysplastic form of Ehlers-Danlos syndrome (SCD-EDS, OMIM 612350). Here, we report the molecular pathogenic mechanism of SCD-EDS caused by two different mutant ZIP13 proteins found in human patients: ZIP13G64D, in which Gly at amino acid position 64 is replaced by Asp, and ZIP13ΔFLA, which contains a deletion of Phe-Leu-Ala. We demonstrated that both the ZIP13G64D and ZIP13ΔFLA protein levels are decreased by degradation via the valosin-containing protein (VCP)-linked ubiquitin proteasome pathway. The inhibition of degradation pathways rescued the protein expression levels, resulting in improved intracellular Zn homeostasis. Our findings uncover the pathogenic mechanisms elicited by mutant ZIP13 proteins. Further elucidation of these degradation processes may lead to novel therapeutic targets for SCD-EDS.</P>
