        New Records of Four Feather Mites (Acariformes: Astigmata) from Waders (Charadriiformes: Scolopacidae) in Korea

        Four feather mites, Dichobrephosceles actitidis(Canestrini, 1878)(Alloptidae), Limosilichus limosae Vasyukova and Mironov, 1986, L. numeni Vasyukova and Mironov, 1986 (Syringobiidae), and Pomeranzevia numenii (Canestrini, 1878) (Avenzoariidae), have been reported in Korea for the first time. Specimens of D. actitidis and L. limosae were obtained from the common sandpiper, Actitis hypoleucos (Linnaeus, 1758), and the black-tailed godwit, Limosa limosa (Linnaeus, 1758), respectively, while L. numeni and P. numenii were collected from the Eurasian whimbrel, Numenius phaeopus (Linnaeus, 1766). The genera Dichobrephosceles Peterson and Atyeo, 1968, Limosilichus Vasyukova and Mironov, 1986, and Pomeranzevia Dubinin, 1951 are also new records for the fauna of Korea. This paper provides morphological descriptions, illustrations, and partial sequences of mitochondrial cytochrome c oxidase subunit I(COI) for all the recorded species based on the specimens collected in Korea.

        Thoracic metastasis in advanced ovarian cancer: comparison between computed tomography and video-assisted thoracic surgery

        Objective: To determine which computed tomography (CT) imaging features predict pleural malignancy in patients with advanced epithelial ovarian carcinoma (EOC) using video-assisted thoracic surgery (VATS), pathology, and cytology findings as the reference standard. Methods: This retrospective study included 44 patients with International Federation of Obstetrics and Gynecology (FIGO) stage III or IV primary or recurrent EOC who had chest CT ≤30 days before VATS. Two radiologists independently reviewed the CT studies and recorded the presence and size of pleural effusions and of ascites; pleural nodules, thickening, enhancement, subdiaphragmatic tumour deposits and supradiaphragmatic, mediastinal, hilar, and retroperitoneal adenopathy; and peritoneal seeding. VATS, pathology, and cytology findings constituted the reference standard. Results: In 26/44 (59%) patients, pleural biopsies were malignant. Only the size of left-sided pleural effusion (reader 1: rho= -0.39, p=0.01; reader 2: rho=-0.37, p=0.01) and presence of ascites (reader 1: rho=-0.33, p=0.03; reader 2: rho=-0.35, p=0.03) were significantly associated with solid pleural metastasis. Pleural fluid cytology was malignant in 26/35 (74%) patients. Only the presence (p=0.03 for both readers) and size (reader 1: rho=0.34, p=0.04; reader 2: rho=0.33, p=0.06) of right-sided pleural effusion were associated with malignant pleural effusion. Interobserver agreement was substantial (kappa=0.78) for effusion size and moderate (kappa=0.46) for presence of solid pleural disease. No other CT features were associated with malignancy at biopsy or cytology. Conclusion: In patients with advanced EOC, ascites and left-sided pleural effusion size were associated with solid pleural metastasis, while the presence and size of right-sided effusion were associated with malignant pleural effusion. No other CT features evaluated were associated with pleural malignancy.         Electrical properties of polyethylene composite films filled with nickel powder and short carbon fiber hybrid filler

        Effects of the amount of nickel powder (Ni) in Ni-carbon fiber (CF) hybrid filler systems on the conductivity(or resistivity) and thermal coefficient of resistance (TCR) of filled high density polyethylene were studied. Increases of the resistivity and TCR with increasing Ni concentration at a given hybrid filler content were observed. Using the fiber contact model, we showed that the main role of Ni in the hybrid filler system is to decrease the interfiber contact resistance when Ni concentration is less than the threshold point. The formation of structural defects leading to reduced reinforcing effect resulted in both a reduction of strength and an increase of the coefficient of thermal expansion in the composite film; these changes are responsible for the increases of both resistivity and TCR with increasing Ni concentration in the hybrid filler system.

        A New Record of Eupithecia praepupillata (Lepidoptera: Geometridae) from Korea

        In this paper, we report for the first time on a species of Eupithecia from Korea. Three females of Eupithecia praepupillata Wehrli, 1927, were collected from the northeastern part of South Korea. With this addition, a total of 53 species of Eupithecia from Korea have been recorded. Diagnosis and description of the species are provided with figures of the genitalia.

        <P>Two novel rhenium cluster compounds, K<SUB>4</SUB>[Re<SUB>6</SUB>S<SUB>8</SUB>(OH)<SUB>6</SUB>]·8H<SUB>2</SUB>O (1) and K<SUB>4</SUB>[Re<SUB>6</SUB>Se<SUB>8</SUB>(OH)<SUB>6</SUB>]·8H<SUB>2</SUB>O (2), containing octahedral cluster chalcogenide anionic complexes [Re<SUB>6</SUB>Q<SUB>8</SUB>(OH)<SUB>6</SUB>]<SUP>4–</SUP> with terminal hydroxo ligands have been synthesized by the reaction of Re<SUB>6</SUB>Q<SUB>8</SUB>Br<SUB>2</SUB> (Q = S, Se) with molten KOH. Two chalcohalide compounds, one known (Cs<SUB>4</SUB>[Re<SUB>6</SUB>S<SUB>8</SUB>Br<SUB>6</SUB>]·2H<SUB>2</SUB>O, 3) and another new (Cs<SUB>3</SUB>[Re<SUB>6</SUB>Se<SUB>8</SUB>Cl<SUB>6</SUB>]·2H<SUB>2</SUB>O, 4), were prepared by reactions of 1 and 2 with CsX and HX (X = Br, Cl) in an aqueous solution. Compounds 1, 2, and 4 have been characterized by the single-crystal X-ray diffraction method. Compounds 1 and 2 are crystallized in triclinic space group P<TEX>$\bar {1}$</TEX> with one formula unit in the cell of dimensions a = 8.4936(8) Å, b = 8.9101(11) Å, c = 10.5940(13) Å, α = 77.935(11)°, β = 75.933(9)°, γ = 71.244(10)°, V = 728.9(1) Å<SUP>3</SUP> (compound 1) and a = 8.613(1) Å, b = 8.996(1) Å, c = 10.057(1) Å, α = 78.587(2)°, β = 77.811(2)°, γ = 71.728(2)°, V = 715.9(2) Å<SUP>3</SUP> (compound 2). Compound 4 crystallizes in the monoclinic space group P2<SUB>1</SUB>/n with two formula units in the cell of dimensions a = 9.819(3) Å, b = 12.925(4) Å, c = 11.756(4) Å, β = 113.38(3)°, V = 1369.6(8) Å<SUP>3</SUP>.
