Functions of I mean in American Talk Shows
강민정(Minjung Kang) 한국사회언어학회 2018 사회언어학 Vol.26 No.2
Kang, Minjung. 2018. “Functions of I mean in American Talk Shows”. The Sociolinguistic Journal of Korea 26(2). 63~84. This paper aims to find out roles of the discourse marker I mean in American talk shows. Ten interviews from six talk shows were analyzed for the investigation and the results indicate that there are some unique functions of I mean which do not seem to be mentioned in early studies: counter-accounting and footing shift functions. This study suggests that the counter-accounting function of I mean can appear in utterance-initial position when the interviewee does not agree with what the interviewer has mentioned. Also, the interviewee can use I mean as a footing shift marker to switch stances from an informative one to an entertaining one (or vice versa). Since these two functions seem to be connected to the institutional settings and goals of talk shows, it is crucial to study functions of I mean in accordance with types of institutional talk.
Explicating What "You" Mean: Turn-initial I mean in American Talk Shows
Kang, Minjung 한국중앙영어영문학회 2019 영어영문학연구 Vol.61 No.4
The primary goals of this paper are to find out how the discourse marker I mean as used in American talk shows functions in turn-initial position and how frequently turn-initial I mean appears as a marker for explicating what the previous speaker has mentioned. Among the previous studies about I mean in talk shows, Kang (2018) points out the counter-accounting function of utterance-initial I mean, and Kang (2019) notes that not only this function but also the addition of more information about the previous speaker’s comments are features that exclusively appear in talk shows. Drawing upon these two works, the current study explores the usages of turn-initial I mean in talk shows and compares the frequencies of each usage, focusing on the unique function of commenting about the previous speaker’s utterance. According to the analysis, it is found that turn-initial I mean has three distinct functions in talk shows, which are further explication of the previous utterance, counter-explication of the previous utterance, and stalling. Also, these two explicating functions are found to appear more often than other well-known functions of I mean such as repair and summarization. These results show that the functions and the frequencies of the discourse marker I mean are related to the institutional characteristics of talk shows as well as to the settings and goals of the participants, including both interviewers and interviewees.
Evolving outcomes of peritoneal dialysis: secular trends at a single large center over three decades

Background: Peritoneal dialysis (PD) is improving as a renal replacement therapy for end-stage renal disease (ESRD) patients. We analyzed the main outcomes of PD over the last three decades at a single large-scale PD center with an established high-quality care system. Methods: As a retrospective cohort study, we included participants (n = 1,203) who began PD between 1990 and 2019. Major PD-related outcomes were compared among the three 10-year cohorts. esults: The 1,203 participants were 58.3% male with a mean age of 47.9 ± 13.8 years. The median PD treatment duration was 45 months (interquartile range, 19-77 months); 362 patients (30.1%) transferred to hemodialysis, 289 (24.0%) received kidney trans-plants, and 224 (18.6%) died. Overall, the 5- and 8-year adjust patient survival rates were 64% and 49%, respectively. Common caus-es of death included infection (n = 55), cardiac (n = 38), and cerebrovascular (n = 17) events. The 5- and 8-year technique survival rates were 77% and 62%, respectively, with common causes of technique failure being infection (42.3%) and solute/water clearance problems (22.7%). The 5-year patient survival significantly improved over time (64% for the 1990-1999 cohort vs. 93% for the 2010-2019 cohort). The peritonitis rate also substantially decreased over time, from 0.278 episodes/patient-year (2000-2004) to 0.162 episodes/patient-year (2015-2019). Conclusion: PD is an effective treatment option for ESRD patients. There was a substantial improvement in the patient survival and peritonitis rates over time. Establishing adequate infrastructure and an effective system for high-quality PD therapy may be warranted to improve PD outcomes.

In this study, the revenue and import/export status of the domestic welding industry between 2017 and 2022 was analyzed using statistics provided by the Korea International Trade Association (KITA) and Korea Statistical Information Service (KOSTAT). The welding industry can be categorized into the welding equipment/consumables industry and welding process industry, which is part of the manufacturing process in the welding application industry. The welding process industry statistics are difficult to extract from the welding application industry statistics; therefore, they were calculated using the ratio of the welding-related expenditure to the total application industry expenditure. The welding industry's revenue, exports, and imports have recently recovered after hitting a low point during the COVID-19 pandemic. Moreover, the increase in the welding process industry imports and exports in the electronics industry offset the decrease in those of the shipbuilding and offshore industry for the specified investigation period.

Despite increasing industrial demand, typical fusion welding of aluminum and copper joints remains difficult due to the formation of intermetallic compounds. Therefore, ultrasonic welding, which is a type of solid-state welding, is used for combining aluminum and oxygen-free copper. It has a low dependence on the materials and can secure large bonding joints in a short duration. However, indentations formed due to the vibration and pressure of ultrasonic welding greatly impact joint quality by affecting joint strength and fracture location. This study investigated the formation of indentations in accordance with welding variables, and proposed a theoretical estimation of fracture strength in ultrasonic welded joints of aluminum and oxygen-free copper. Since the fracture occurred along the indentation boundary in aluminum substrate-which has lower strength than copper-failure strength increased with increasing indentation depth in the copper plate. Average fracture strength was 65% of the tensile strength of base materials due to the stress concentrated around the indentation. Therefore, product design needs to consider base material strength and fracture propagation path before deciding on a safety factor.
